On 4/15/04 my husband and I purchased a Douglas Furniture reclining sofa from a Levitz Furniture store in San Bernardino, California. In April of 2005, approx. 2 weeks past the sofa's 1 yr. warranty, the right hand pulley for the reclining mechanism broke off in my hand. I called a customer service number and arranged to have the part shipped to my home, and understood that I would be responsible for the labor to effect the repair. The repair was completed in June of 2004, and the sofa performed without problems until approx. two weeks ago, when the left hand pulley tab came off in my hand.

I have been attempting to contact Douglas Furniture customer service number, but have received a busy signal every time I call. I called a repair hotline for an outside firm who does repair work for furniture, and the lady I spoke with this morning told me that Douglas Furniture was no longer in business. I have a customer service department phone number for Douglas Furniture, but calls to that number only produce continual ring tones, with no answer on the other end.

I only want to contact Douglas Furniture at this point so that I can again receive (free of charge as per my warranty on the reclining mechanism as long as I own this piece of furniture)the part to repair the sofa's reclining mechanism. At that point I would again contact another outside repair firm to complete the repair. I don't feel that I should be responsible for the cost of the part. I do realize that labor cost for the repair is my responsility, though. How am I, as a consumer, protected by law for product warranty repairs if a company is no longer in business?

Carlos of Wharton NJ (09/23/08)
We bought all our furniture over at Levitz in Fairfield, N.J. Everything was delivered and assembled as well. It was all fine until a few months later when the mattress I purchased started to develop a dip in the center. We contacted the mattress place, which wasn't Levitz and they said they would come out and take a look at it. When they did they noticed that there was no center support added to the frame which caused the dip. So that made the mattress store not responsible for it.

I called Levitz and they were really rude and didn't even want to send me the center support let alone replace the mattress. Well I ended up buying a new mattress. 900. I didn't think it was right the way the treated me afterwords so I took them to small claims court and was awarded the 900. Well 2 months later they filed for bankruptcy so obviously I will never see that money. But yet they continue to send me a bill every month for what I owe them.

I have made several attempts in sending complaints. On Sep 1, 2007 is put a deposit of 800.00 and a Kim's Cottage bedroom set for my daughter. Balance remaining was 812.69. The salesmen told me on the date I put the deposit that the pieces were not in inventory due to the amount of people would place deposits on this item. On several occassions the salesman said the rest of the pieces has not arrived. He said this in Oct, Nov and finally in Dec 07.

The last letter I received from Levitz dated Nov 3, 2007 states the next delivery date has been set for 12/2/2007. I called before the date and was told delivery would be some time around mid Dec 07. Around the second week of Dec 07 during the evening I saw a commercial stating Levitz is going out of business (going bankrupt). I went the next day to Woodbury Levitz Furniture store. The store was pretty much cleaned out.

I was told that I need to sue Levitz or try to get money back from my bank. I could not get money back from my bank because it was already past the 60 day limit. This was a purchase for my daughter in which she was very sad she did not get it. As well as I am very angry that a big furniture company can do this to a consumer who saves his money and relies on big changes like that to not do this to them. How can I get my money back? There should be a law that prohibits large furniture or evem small furniture companies from ripping consumers off like that. Please assist in this matter. Thank you.

I lost 800.00 resulting from Levitz going bankrupt.
