Curves

Donna of Westport MA (02/04/09)
My daughter-in-law and I joined Curves in Westport, Ma om March 24,2008. We were going as often as we could, most times it was 3X a week. We took a couple of months off because of vacations etc. Upon our return in November we were finding the doors were always locked and no one was there. At first we thought maybe the owner was sick or maybe a death in the family. We went several times to no avail. Then we began calling. At first the phone just rang off the wall and then we got the message, This number has been disconnected! The owner had just closed the doors and walked away.

The best part is she kept taking 34.00 a month out of our checking accounts right up til December so far. It cost us 64.00 plus a bag of groceries (for the needy) to sign up. We would like our membership money plus 2 months of fees returned to us for a total each of &128.00. Now here comes the big problem. We are told that each curves is owned individually and that the corporation has nothing to do with the fees.

How do we reach someone who obviously left no forwarding address or phone number and because we know nothing of her other than the business, where do we begin to find her and HOW do we begin to get our money back. I will notified my Credit Union not to pay out to her anymore but I still want my money back. I might also add that Curves on State Road in Dartmouth, MA and Curves on Tucker Street in Fall River, MA were both gracious enough to invite us to become members at their facilities without charging us a new membership fee. If it wasn't for the fact that we both have cold feet when it comes to Curves we may have taken their offers, but NO thanks.... Any help you can offer to us in this matter would be greatly appreciated..

Called and cancelled my membership over a month ago. Was charged again this month (October). When I called I was told there is a 30 cancellation. I did cancel over 30 days ago and yet was charged again. I can't beleive that you can not get a credit back the sure can take your money from your account. I haven't even worked out for over 2 months and yet they can take the money out. But when needing to cancel they can not get it done in a timely matter and charge you yet again.

My checking account is drafted the amount again and I am having to come up with another 34.00 to cover for a fee that I didn't expect.

I signed a 12 month membership agreement on the understanding that if I had medical problems (I am 70), I could cancel the membership. After two months on the Curves Smart program I experienced palpitations, exhaustion, pains in chest and arm. My doctor put me thru numerous tests and recommended I quit the exercise program as it is too strenuous for me. I took her note to the Curves office and they charged me 100 cancellation fee, told me I could have quit the Curves Smart program and just exercised as I felt up to, although none of their staff EVER offered this option when I complained of being exhausted. I had reduced my workout on my own, but they insisted I complete the full double circuit of machines in order to meet my goals and that I work faster to keep the green light on.

I am unable to reach the franchise manager although I have left my number with one of the many staff members on duty as requested. I am afraid, based on the other complaints shown on your site, that they will continue to bill my credit card. As I am living on Social Security, it is a hardship to pay 49.00 each month for something I cannot use.

Dawn of Orangeburg SC (08/19/08)
Was checking banking information online and realized that I had a debit of 29 from Curves. Called the company and was told that I was a member. I explained to Gail that I have not been there in the last 3 1/2 years. She stated that they had a new computer system and everyone was put in it. I faxed to her a letter explaining why I could not attend at that time. She stated she would get with the lady that owned the company and get back to me. She called me back like 3 days later to tell me that I would be getting my money back.

Come August 2 I got another debit by Curves in the amount of 29. I called once again and was told by Gail that she would get in charge with the lady once again to see what happened. She called me back and stated that I would have my money within a week.

Called once again on 8/8 and Gail called me back and said for me to check with my bank on 8/9 and the money should be there. I check and no money credited back to my account. Called Gail on 8/11 and she stated that I should have the money at end of next week. To this date I have no money.

Have spent a large amount of my time tracking down my money that should have never been taken out. When the second amount was taken out on 8/2 it cause my account to go into over draft which I got charged 32.. Now Curves owes me 91.00 and I can't get anyone to give me my money back. I have gone two months without this money and they have been getting interest on money that is not theirs. It was taken twice without my permission.

I joined and within a month I terminated my membership. I had deposited 99 (with signed contract). CURVES refused to return the 99 although the web site stated the first month was free. I was told the 99 was a service fee.
