Zenith/LG Large-Screen TVs

Wade of Reno NV (2/2/07):
In November 2003 after significant research, I purchased a Zenith model D52WLCD Television. I have been very happy with the purchase until recently. The television began having an issue with the screen display. A large blue streak appeared in the upper left hand corner. It has grown progressively larger. I contacted the service provider here in my area, and have been informed that this issue is present in many of these models sold in 2003.

The repair cost is over sixteen hundred dollars. The original purchase price of the television was just twenty-three hundred dollars. After extensive research regarding this issue, it has come to my attention that many other individuals that have purchased this product are having the same problem. I would think that in the interest of protecting the reputation of your company you would address this issue with your customers.

Many individuals that purchased this model have all suffered the same problem, after the same time frame of use. I have copied and pasted some of the complaints that are posted on-line. There is significant documentation available that infers that Zenith sold a defective product.

I purchased my Zenith Z50px2d plasma 50" television in Jan of 06. Within 16 months, I heard what has been described as the pop of death. I called Zenith and was told I was too far out of warranty for them to do anything about this. So I went ahead and paid almost 800.00 to have the set repaired. Yesterday, 09/09/09 the same pop and now the set is dead again. Just about another 16 months to date. I will not have the set repaired for another 800.00. This has been a faulty set and something should be done.

Purchased 50in Zenith Plasma (Z50Px2D) 12/05 for 3,400. 7/06 loud pop and blank screen. Called LG & they sent tech to repair. Repair shop had TV for 3 months. Advised me that all 4 boards had to be replaced. Faulty boards per TV tech! Pretty [bad] to pay that much for a TV and only get to use it for 6 months before its off to a repair shop for 3 months out of the 12 month warranty! TV has been working OK up until 8/09. Same thing happened again. Loud pop & blank screen.

Called LG & they advised me that they were aware of the numerous complaints on line about the faulty boards for this particular Zenith model but because I was out of warranty there was nothing they could do for me. I asked if they would at least pay for the part & I would pay for labor. Was told No. I advised them of the numerous on line sites speaking directly of this same issue & that LG was replacing parts & labor for some people, so why not for me.

Rep advised me that they handled each complaint case by case & they felt I was to far out of warranty. I advised him I was looking at a person's comment left on Fixya website that had purchased his same Zenith in 1/06 & that they had provided him an extended warranty which covered the faulty Y board part & labor. Rep advised me that he was sorry but there was nothing he could do for me.

I feel this is completely unfair that LG is obviously aware that they have a faulty part going into this TV and they are replacing boards for some people & not for others based on a CASE BY CASE situation. I guess this guys 3,000 went a little further than mine? Have not paid for repair yet, but estimate is 500-600 to fix.

LG has no right picking & choosing who they will replace this faulty board for. They know these boards are faulty because they were getting them from Mexico and have switched to an American company. They should have a RECALL on all of these old faulty Y boards & replace them with the new American made boards at no cost to the consumer!

Television started with one vertical line and currently has seven (7). Spoke with a supervisor regarding this matter and was told that there was "absolutely nothing"that they could do for me. The television was purchased June 1, 2006 from Circuit City (currently out of business). I have noticed that this is an on going problem with this particular model the Z50px20. This is the second issue with this television since our purchase.

To spend 2500.00 US currency for a television and 3 years later the television has all of the issues with it is insanity. For a alleged reputable company to tell a consumer that there is absolutely nothing that we can do for you also says a great deal for about that company.

Judy of Yuma, AZ August 21, 2009

While watching the TV, there was a loud "pop" or "crackling noise". The screen went blank but there was still sound. After a little bit of research, I have discovered that this is a common problem with Zenith PLasma TV, Model # Z50P3. I purchased this TV in Nov. of 2007. I can't believe that a 1000 TV (bought on "black Friday" sale)does not last any longer than a year and a half! Zenith is aware of the problem, and has done nothing to fix it. They won't even send a part to replace the one that blew, because "they are only warranteed for a year". If a company is aware of the problem, shouldn't there be a recall on them?? What recourse do we have?

David of Worcester, MA August 20, 2009

I bought a Zenith(LG) 50" plasma tv on 8/13/06 for over 3000. I also purchased a 3 yr warranty. SIX days after the warranty expired (8/19/09) there was a loud pop and the screen had a washed out look. After shutting the set off, it wouldn't turn on. After researching this problem, apparently I should be happy that mine lasted so long. I would have preferred that it died last week - at least it wouldn't have cost me 495.08!

The authorized repair tech replaced the Z sustain board. Neither the warranty company (GE) nor LG are willing to help cover this, despite the fact that so many other consumers have the exact same problem.

This is clearly a manufacturing defect, given the pervasiveness of the problem. There should also have been a recall, given how long ago this problem started. I wonder how long *this* Z-sustain board will last, or how long before the Y-sustain board quits.

andy of wrightsville, PA August 9, 2009

I have a Zenith Z50PX2D flat screen Plasma TV that died on 7/30/09. Have sound but no picture. From what I am reading everyone is having a screen problem.

Gian of New Canaan, CT August 8, 2009

After approx. 2 years of owning the 50 inch plasma tv, there was a pop sound and the sceen mostly disappeared and now will not turn on at all. Waiting for the class action...

Mark of Lake Elsinore, CA August 7, 2009

I have a Zenith Z50PX2D flat screen Plasma TV. The screen went blank after I heard a "pop" and then all I get is audio from my TV. After researching this online, I have come to find out that this is a recurring problem with this particular model. I am therefore logging my complaint so that eventually there can be some legal action taken against Zenith. 3000 loss (this is the cost of the TV I purchased in 2006).

Diane of Upper Marlboro, MD August 5, 2009

While watching my telvision in July, 2009 there was a loud popping noise and the tv went burry and then another loud pop and the screen went black. I call Zenith several times and was asked when I brought the tv and I said 02/18/2006 they told me that they woiuld need the receipt before they could do anything and I sent them the receipt and was told that it was too far out of warrenty to help me, in other words a flat NO. I had a three year warrent with Circuit City and I did not renew when it expired in March, 2009 because CC was going out of business. I paid 3,000.00 for this television, Zenith model Z50PX2D. Zenith knew that the boards were a problem and they keep on selling and ripping the consumers off. I fell like Zenth/LG should pay everyone the price of a new 50 inch television of their choice. I would like to see a class action law suit as soon as possible to make Zeinth pay for ripping people off with faulty televisions and they saying its not their problem, its yours.

Phil of Bonney Lake, WA August 1, 2009

Same old story. My Zenith 50" plasma purchased in January of 2006 went "POP" and I smelled burning electrical parts. Screen faded to nothing. This is only 3 1/2 years old! Anybody starting a class action lawsuit yet?
