Amana Appliances

Donna of Bellmore, NY September 22, 2009

My Amana refrigerator, purchased 3/16/07, had a small fire on 9/17/09. We unplugged it immediately and called the number on our extended service coverage. They would send someone in 2 days. I called Maytag, they could have someone there in 4 days (they both use the same authorized service center!). I checked you web and saw there was a recall on 1.6 million refrigerators. I called Maytag again, but since mine was a newer model and a bottom freezer, it was not part of the recall. I again explained that the unit went on fire, it was a waste of time. The tech arrives on Sat. to check the fridge and confirms its the relay (reason for previous recalls)he needs to order the part and it can take up to 7 - 10 days! I call Maytag again to see if they could get it repaird faster. Since this is now considered a safety issue, it has to be handled through Safety - no one is there on the weekend - and I have to wait until Monday. I ask to speak to a supervisor to try and get some assistance, but I am connected to a voice mailbox. I left a message, but no one ever called back. I received a call Monday morning from the repair service, they located a new relay and would be over today to fix it. I finally call Maytag safety again (since she didn't return my call) and the rep. acted annoyed with me for calling. I asked what was done for other people whose fridge was recalled, Maytag will only repair the unit. this refrigerator is a fire hazard. They should be REPLACED not repaired. Are they waiting for someone to be severely burned or killed before they correct this?

Amana range purchased Nov 2000. We've replaced the keypad unit three times and it is out again. It costs over 100 every time we replace it and thats doing the labor ourselves. They will only offer 25% off of a new Amana range. They are depreciating it 8-9 years. I find that unfair since it is a faulty unit. It was not dependable from the first time the unit went bad. Maybe depreciating 2-3 years would be more fair. We have had the unit go out twice when we have had company-once was Thanksgiving. It is so frustrating!

April of Bangor, ME August 27, 2009

I have an Amana slide in, smooth top, range which was purchased march 2002. The stove was purchased from Dunnett Inc. in Bangor Maine. I had a few repairs done since the stove was installed, the oven thermos stat and the control pad. The control pad starting beeping on August 22, 2009, my husband opened the stove top to get the numbers to order the new part and much to our surprise the counter top in the back of the stove where the vent pipe from the oven comes out was burnt and one side on the stove itself was melting. Also the underside of the glass top itself is blackened. I went on the internet to see if there has been a recall on this stove and found nothing.

So on August 23, 2009 I emailed Amana customer service. On the 26th I call Customer service spoke with J. Kuhn and asked for his email address to forward him some photo of the damage. I also told him I was calling my home owners insurance to let them know what was going on and if the house burnt down because of the stove that Amana would pay the replacement cost. I also explained to J. that we live in a geodesic dome and the counter tops had to be custom made to fit and would be expensive to replace.

Mr. Kuhn told me to have my insurance pay the cost for replacement. Excuse me this is not happening, I am not having my homeowners going up because of this. Now Dunnett will not come look at my stove because the repair guy they sent to fixed the problems in the past is a name they do not recognize. All I want is a replacement stove and the cost to replace my counter top is this too much to ask? Now I am in a wait and see game with the two companies. This stove is a law suit waiting to happen.

Bought an Amana Dishwasher Model ADB2500AWW1 in December 2006 - the front latch broke. I'm now told my a "qualified Amana tech" that not only do I a new latch assembly but also a new front control panel since the flimsy plastic housing for both are broken. The cost of the replacement parts as well as labor would be MORE than the original unit cost. THIS IS A SCAM! Amana is suppossd to be a guality brand but is lousy & from browsing the Web there are many other people with the same issue. The tech even told me that he replaces at least 1 of these per week for Amana, Whirlpool, Maytag & Jenn-Air products (all owned by the same company). They should issue a recall & put in adequate parts that can support the functions of the appliances. I will NEVER buy Amana or any sister company products again, what a rip off.

I have an Amana gas range. This stove is not safe. The slightest bump of the knobs will turn on the gas but not ignite it.

One day I came home to a house full of gas, thank God it didn't blow up. This stove is going in the garbage as soon as I can afford to buy a new one. I would not recommend this stove to anyone. Am I the only one this happened to?

Larynda of Lakewood, WA August 2, 2009

We bought our freezer-on-the-bottom refigerator in 2002. After only a few months the pull out basket began making grooves and holes in its track. We found out that the track was made out of the same materials as the rest of the unit (foam covered over by a thin plastic) and had no reinforcement. In June 2009 the thermostat went causing the automatic defrost not to work which caused the refigerator not to work which in turn caused the food in the refrigerator to spoil. Just this week (July 29 2009)the center track for the vegetable drawers broke off where it connects in the front. It seems this refrigerator was very poorly made, and unless Amana proves to have appliance made with better materials, I will not buy another Amana product.

Since purchasing an over under, Stainless Steel counter depth Amana Refrigerator, model #ABC2037DES in 2004, I have had nothing but trouble. Thermostats failed several times, the defrost coils broke several times, the compressor broke and leaked. It seemed that the problems were elusive because it would take several visits by the technicians to diagnose, get parts and repair the problems. All in all we have had 12 visits from A&E.

6 year old refrigerator died...compressor failure I have 20+ year old in the garage still working

mary of winston salem nc, NC July 17, 2009

Purchased Amana Refrig Mode; #ASS2222FEQ on 3/25/2008 7/13/2009 second incident of freezer not working in refrigerator not yet 1 1/2 yrs old. I called 877-342-1446, frantic that I was going to lose a freezer of food; advised by Kim that a repairmam would arrive 7/15 between 8a-12n. I called 800 which was another number I had for Amana, spoke with Jamila. After explaining the problem, Jamila advised there was no service call request in the computer, so she initiated and advised repairman would be here on Wed, 7/15/09. I did tell Jamila that a second freezer failure in less than a year is totally unacceptable.

7/15/09 repairman arrived right around 8am, discovered some problem with paperwork; I called 877 and spoke with Mark, who was able to advise me I had called the manufauturer and the extended warrenty numbers, advised are separate and do not have shared computer programs. Mark said he could take care of it, gave a confirmation # to repairman and was going to Fax sheets to local office.

On 7/16/2009 the local repair business called me to say Maytag Dependability Plus refusing to pay the bill because they authorized another co for the repair--that company called after the first repairman had left. Amana Dependability Plus will not change the work order from A&E Factory Service (who did not come or perform any service) to Convenient Appliance Service, who came and rendered service. Jim would not give me names of any supervisors nor would he transfer me to anyone else--said no one there has any more authority than he.

I then called the 800 and asked for name of president of company--Lisa did not know name of Amana president, and said all she could do was to transfer me to Dependability Plus , because I have an extended warrenty-- endless, repetitive cycle. I advised all parties that I had not realized I was speaking with two different departments, but since the service was ok'd, I do not understand the big deal to cancel the work order to A&E Factory Service and transfer it to Convenient Appliance Service. Oh no, this cannot possible be done!!!!

Not only do I apparantly have a faulty piece of equipment, this is a company dedicated to providing customer frustration. This could have been so easily solved, but agents have dug their heels in, and will be damned if they will help the customer. This is the very last Whirlpool/Amana product I will purchase--remember this is the second time the freezer stopped freezing in less than 1 1/2yrs. Customer Service is a joke -- and we wonder why jobs go overseas?

dennis of wilson, TX July 10, 2009
