Amana Appliances

Ruth of Northfield, OH March 12, 2009

Ruth of Northfield OH (03/12/09)
I complained about the food in my freezer defrosting in October 1008. I was told that my warranty expired 2 weeks prior. Then the freezer began to work again and I transferred the food from my upright freezer in the garage back into the refrigerator freezer. About a month later the same thing happened and I called again being told that my warranty expired. The third time in December I called again being told there was nothing that could be done.

A customer service representative transferred me to a very rude and condescending person who asked me what I wanted him to do about the situation. I explained I wanted them to take responsibility for repairing the freezer. He told me that he has a job because of people like me. I could only get him to agree to pay for the compressor and I had to pay for the service call in addition to the labor which totalled more than the compressor. When I commented that I would never buy another Amana/Maytag/Whirlpool product again he renigged on the offer.

Well, finally, the refrigerator was fixed and a new compressor was installed 450 later. Now in March of 2009, I noticed the ceiling of my basement wet and another repair was made to the tune of 250 for a new valve. My hardwood floor behind the refrigerator is soaking wet and buckling and I am told to call my homeowners insurance. This refrigerator is 5 1/2 years old and this situation is ridiculous. the repairman explained to me the next thing to go will be the ice maker.

I can hardly believe that I paid 1600 for a product that I thought would be trustworthy only to spend additional money on repairs and be treated badly by customer relations. I will never buy another Maytaq/Amana/Jenn Air Kitchen Aid/Whirlpool product again and I recommend the same for other consumers. Lost food in the freezer, leaky valve cause water damage to my hardwood floor and my ceiling in the lower level and having to spend 700 in repairs for a refrigerator that is just over 5 years old.

22 Cubic Foot Bottom Mount Amana Refrigerator. Bottom Freezer. MODEL NUMBER: ABB2223DEQ I bought this refridgerator on 03/08/06. On 05/15/08 the food in my refridgerator started getting warm and everything in my freezer had frost on it because it was no longer defrosting. As it turned out, I had to have the 'refrigerator control board' replaced (a computer chip Item #ABFCB-45). Because the waranty had expired, I had to pay for all expenses myself.

Total replacement cost for the replacement of the control board was 305.84.

I purchased an Amana electric range in April of 2004. Since that time I have had the control panel on the range replaced six times, and it needs to be replaced again. The touch pad will show an F1 error message and then the oven becomes disabled. Each time I call Amana they are rude and you have to jump through hoops to eventually talk to someone that scolds you for not purchasing the warranty and then they say the orginal warranty has expired. More hoops and after days of calling and being re-routed, someone reluctantly agrees to cover the cost of the part, but never the labor. It is obvious this part is defective or defective in the range, yet no one will vouch for this recurring problem with this particular range.

Each time our range goes out, it is about 3 weeks we go without an oven or cooktop. Three weeks multiplied by seven is 21 weeks without a range, not to mention the endless hours on the phone ensuring we don't pay for the part. This is unacceptable. We have invested more into the labor to have this control panel fixed (1050)repeatedly, then we spent on the actual range (880). In addition, the cost of going without a range forces cold meals or dining out. Extended warranties should not be a replacement for unacceptable quality and defaulted parts.

In 2001 I purchased an Amana Big Oven gas range. Approximately two month after it was installed the oven door fell off in my hands. At about the same time there was a recall for excessive carbon monoxide and heat during the broiling and cleaning cycles. Both were repaired after calling Amana.

In 2007 I had to have the oven thermostat replaced as the oven no longer came on. The repair cost approximately 200 which I paid for. Since I rarely use my oven, I thought that the electronics should have lasted longer. Two weeks ago, I was using the self clean feature and the oven got so hot it melted the molding around the oven door and singed the outside of the door and the burner knob above it.

I am currently dealing with Amana's customer service, but doubt they will do anything as I have read of many others having similar experiences. I am greatful it did not cause a fire but do not know what damage inhaling the fumes from the melting plastic may have done to me.

Bought 2 Amana window heatpumps Mo#AH183A35MA 12/20/07 and now the fan motor is locked up on one. Do not know what the motor will cost me, but I know it has a one year warrenty, so I will be installing a new motor myself. Thank God I have been working on Heating and Airconditioners for over 25 years.

Have not contacted a parts supplyer yet, but my guess will be over 100.00 for the motor and capacitor. Paid 1,582.00 for both heatpumps
