Consumer Complaints

Look out! There's a problem with some of these grills that can cause a fire. There've been at least two recalls plus the consumer complaints listed below.

linda of Montrose, CO July 28, 2009

I purchased the Charmglow Grill in August Model Number 720-0396 from Home Depot in Montrose. The grill is used once or twice a week durning the summer months. The grill is not lighting properly. Sometimes the gril temp goes all the way to maybe 200 degrees and then sometimes one or two of the burners light but when you try to light a third then the burnes almost go all the way out. We have tried using different propane bottles and have purchased a new regulator thinking that it went bad. We paid aalot of money for this grill and really feel that it should work longer than just a short period of time. We have had people over for dinner and had to cook in the hot kitchen and have resorted to going out to eat and spending more. I have tried to contact these people by phone but only get a recording saying that they are experianceing a high rate of calls and to call on a Tuesday, Wednesday, pr Thursday. I have tried these days too but I guess when they have bad products then everyone calls. I talked to Home Depot about the problem and they offered no help. I do hope that you can help I would like a grill that is safe and dependable.

Grill is 4 years old, and I am on my 3rd set of burners. they are under warranty. 20 bucks to ship 3. what happens when the warranty expires.the price goes up to 87. for 3 burners. they tell me they should be replaced every 6 months. I did not know this when I bought the grill in 6 years I could pay for a new grill!!!!!

Ken of Sugar Grove, IL July 28, 2009

I grew up with my parents owning a Charmglow Gas Grill (permenent mount, double box unit ) that they used for over 30 years. So when I in the market for a new BBQ grill I was delighted in seeing the Charmglow products at Home Depot. I wanted a BBQ grill that would last me for years. After only 2 months, the stainless steel grill now has RUST on it, and it's covered when not in use.

Now when researching it on the internet, I see all the complaints about not only rust, but fires from faulty burner units. I'll have to keep an eye on the burners from now on, but it sounds like I be making another major purchase for a BBQ grill in the next year or so. TOTALLY BUMMED. Spent over 500.00

charles of Rincon, United States July 27, 2009

The burners crumbled aafter less than a year of use. Charmglow should go back out of business. Home Depot has lost me as a customer of any product that they handle.

Warren of Mundelein, IL July 11, 2009

Bought Charmglow grille at Christmas 2004, used during summer and fall since then. Grille has no serial number or model number on it, but the owner's manual has "Model 810-2320-B" on back cover, and also has "140-2320-H, 10/04". I believe the "10/04" means October 2004.

To start 2009 season, cooking flame was low, so we cleaned all parts including 3 burners, and replaced partly filled LP cylinder with full one. Flames are still low and grille does not heat above 250-degrees. Suspect regulator is issue, and have seen recall notices. The frame of my grille is identical to one shown with recalled "GDA" regulator, but this regulator is stamped "Model 190200", with Chinese manufacturer "Wingbo Wanan" on other side.

All of the symptoms noted by others appear to be occuring with this grille, including a "flame pop" upon shutting off burners. Brinkman website indicates my grille is not part of recall, but this does not seem correct as all issues identical.

Clint of Austin, TX July 10, 2009

I purchased a Charmaglow Gas Grill two years ago from Home Depot. It looked good, had two separate cooking areas, and stainless steel finish. That lasted about a month! I was cooking chicken ad all of the sudden the flames reached 3-4 feet and the temp about 800 degrees. So much for stainless steal it looked like crap. I thought that I had done something wrong. Now after owning this thing for two years I can tell you that it is the worst made grill I have ever seen. I have had to put out several serious fire hazards with it, the burners are crumbling, and the stainless steal is rusting??? I keep this thing in a covered area!! I have own a few other grills and this is the worst despite being the most expensive. It is extremely dangerous and the flame is hard to control.

Andrew of Suffern, NY July 10, 2009

I have the 810-8500 5 burner grill. I bought it May 2008 and I take great care of it.

Three weeks ago the handle of the doors just snapped. I called brinkman and they said I would get a new one. It has not shown up. Now one of my burner valves is frozen in the open position. I called Brinkman and they said they would send one. Now I can not use the barbeque. I tried to light it with the valve open, but that can be dangerous it has to be lit real fast. Anyway after it is lit , I turn the other knobs on and the regulator shuts the whole thing down.

It seems to me that this is a really dangerous piece of equipment and I am amazed there is no recall. Of course like anything else someone probably has to get seriously hurt to have that happen.

m.khan of bridgeport, CT July 10, 2009

i bought chamglow 720-0234 from home depot 2007. it worked for first year than the flame were not slow. when checked the burner three of those were rust and broken. it looks brand new from outside but useless because all its burners are broken. i am lucky that there was no disaster due to broken burners. it cost me lot of money.

Michael of Ellicott City, MD July 10, 2009

Same as the other 33 pages of complaints. Luckily the old house I purchased had a Weber gas grill that is simple but great to use. I was surprised to see Home Depot still selling Charmglow Grills. I will do all of my home repair shopping at Lowes from now on or until HD stops selling /endorsing Charmglow. HD should offer a store credit for my POS Charmglow as I luckily have a Weber grill. Let HD deal with Charmglow and HD will get their customers back.

Bob of CHARLOTTE, NC July 4, 2009

I purchased a Charmglow 720-0036-HD-06 and it worked fine for the first year. Year two was a different story. The right burner would work fine if it was the only one on but when the center or left burners were engaged the flame would all but go out. Despite cleaning and checking the burners I couldn't get even flames to all burners.
