Gardeners' Choice Complaints Sprout Annually

It's hard to tell who's angrier about their dealings with Gardeners' Choice -- those who didn't get the plants they ordered or those who did.

There are a couple of lessons here, the primary one being: don't use a check to pay for merchandise ordered through the mail or online. You have no recourse if the merchandise fails to arrive or is unsatisfactory. Instead, pay with a credit card. You have 60 days to dispute a charge for missing and unsatisfactory goods or services.

Don't have a credit card? Shop locally and pay cash.

What can those who lost money to Gardeners' Choice do? Not much, although we have a few suggestions.

This, by the way, is an annual event. Come springtime, the complaints blossom, like this batch of seedlings:

Sharon of Wentzville, MO April 25, 2009

I received my order on 4/13/09. I am missing the second set of 4 Eskimo Raspberry My invoice indicates I was charged for them. I called the number on the catalog to speak with someone today. I picked option 2 and then option 0 for a representative. I only got through to someone once after being on hold for 17 minutes. Her name was Erin. she said I needed to call customer service, but she couldn't/wouldn't transfer me to anyone else. After that I was disconnect each time I tried to reach customer service. This happened at leat 8 time. I finally got to a live person and she said she was not customer service and I would have to call customer service. She couldn't transfer me to them. I never got through to customer service. I was charged 19.98 for the product plus whatever shipping charges I paid.

Ordered a tree, sent a check b ut NEVER received it! Want my money or tree!

Mariellen of Paos Robles, CA April 20, 2009

I placxed an order in the amount of 208.15. Have not received everything they said was in the package. On most of the different plants they shorted me by a few plants on almost all of them. That I wasnt going to complain about but they charged me for two Eskimo Rasperry plants that they didnt send at all. Have spent HOURS trying to reach someone and when I finally spoke to someone she said she couldnt help me but would have someone call me.,That was over a week ago.Have tried for 2 hours tonight to reach coutamer service online. What a joke.

Luckily just a little money.

Garland of Harriman, TN April 20, 2009

I ordered tomato plants some time ago and I received them some of them was broken about ten of them.

I called the no. on the magazine and when it tells you to punch customer service it gives you a busy signal.

Barbara of Bellerose, NY April 18, 2009

Advertisement on TV for Big Early Hybrid Tomato Plants to bloom by July 4th and for Giant Tree Tomato which was supposed to produce bushels of tomatoes. I ordered by phone first the computer would not shut up and let me finish but kept trying to sell more, finally I hung up. The tomatoe plants and the charge for same arrived. The tomatoe plants are dead and even if they were not they look like weeds not like tomatoe plants and I will never again use this company for anything.

Paul of Murrells Inlet, SC April 15, 2009

order placed mar 21 2009. received one item #V30010-6 Giant Tree Tomato thru the postal system on 8 apr 09 and all 6 plants were dead. To long in transit. all dried up. nothing left to look at. not worth 41cents to send back. talked to customer svc and they told me to contact you with my complaint. all I want is 6 new tomato plants and they want to make a big deal out of it. would you please just tell someone to re-send them out again.

15.00 don't seem like much, but when your on disability and a veteran, every dollar helps. thanks for your time. I appreciate the help.

Ronald of San Diego, CA April 15, 2009

Ordered giant tomato plants, received tiny Jiffy Pots alegedly with seeds.

Economic damage: Plants have greater value than seeds. Tomatos grown from established plant might have been worth the 21 but tiny Jiffy Pots with seeds are worth penny's, not dollars. This is fraud. This is class action material.

Nancy of Castalian Springs, TN April 15, 2009

i have ordered from this company before and never had a problem however i was worried after reading all the negative comments- i ordered anyway and much to my delight, my order was filled and sent in record time - i will not hesitate to order from them again

Chris of Lafe, AR April 15, 2009

I called before I ordered some trees and they told me they were 2-4 foot tall and when I got them they were about 1 inch tall, brown leaves, and the leaves were falling off. I have tried to call and call and keep getting cut off when I push the button to talk to customer service. I have also emailed these people with no response. Very disappointing!

Dottie of Sidney, OH April 14, 2009
