Gardeners' Choice Complaints Sprout Annually

It's hard to tell who's angrier about their dealings with Gardeners' Choice -- those who didn't get the plants they ordered or those who did.

There are a couple of lessons here, the primary one being: don't use a check to pay for merchandise ordered through the mail or online. You have no recourse if the merchandise fails to arrive or is unsatisfactory. Instead, pay with a credit card. You have 60 days to dispute a charge for missing and unsatisfactory goods or services.

Don't have a credit card? Shop locally and pay cash.

What can those who lost money to Gardeners' Choice do? Not much, although we have a few suggestions.

This, by the way, is an annual event. Come springtime, the complaints blossom, like this batch of seedlings:

Traci of Pittsburgh, PA March 24, 2009

I had placed an order on line for 3 topsy turvy tomato plants. also ordering other tomato plants as well as pepper plant. to my surprise at checkout the total came to 167+. I immediately checked to see if there was a number on the site. N/A. there was no confirmation e-mail sent to my account. When receiving my package it was a box of planting pots filled with what I assume to be the seedlings for the other plants. more than what I had intended to order.

the topsy turvy plants were not in the box. on the label outside of the box it states depending on your order size-this may be a partial shipment. in the box was no invoice. upon further investigation I see there has been many problems with this particular company. My credit card charge for the month of March is 149.91 under Giant Tomato Tree. #30866-5182290. in all fairness, it is too early to tell if the plants will not survive

money that seems to have been thrown away

Lois of Stuart, VA March 24, 2009

I ordered 3 cherry hedge N28125 these were ordered on 03/03/2009 check was cashed and we have not received the 3 plants that we have ordered from this company, last year we ordered two tomatoe plants the hanging kind and never received them but this year we were not going to just let thid go by and not say anything, would love to get our hedge. I would greatly appreciate this if you could help me out in getting my cherry hedge. Thank you

Alma of Spring Hill, FL March 22, 2009

I ordered two tomato tree plants and just received two peat pots with a tomato seed in each. This is not what I ordered and I have tried to call a number of times, have held on several times and then was cut off with out talking to any one.

Not a big cost but just very frustrating that a company would not send right merchandise and then not answer phone when you have a complaint

Shannon of Houston, AR March 3, 2009

I placed an order for 27.47 through the mail using a money order and never heard anything back from the company. I usually double check things, so I called the Money Gram and they said that the money order had indeed been cashed, so I looked on the internet and found this website where everyone said they didn't get their order. I immediately went to the Gardener's Choice website and got their phone number and called them.

They said that they did get my order and it was to be shipped in April (appropriate shipping time for my zone).

Carol of Palm Desert, CA February 17, 2009

ordered 3 giant tree tomatoes check was cashed, but didn't received the plants. wrote, called, nothing is working. scamed ripped off, worst customer service i've ever seen. continue to sent me new 2009 catalog I don't understand how this company can get away with it. Can state of Michi prosecute this company? How I wish I have read the complaints prior I purchased it.I was shocked by the hundred of complaints report against the company.

wasted my money, times, and completely lost comfidence on all mail orders.I hope the goverment would take legal action against this company. Put it to the end, once for good.

Sarah of Prichard,Al.36610, AL February 16, 2009

First of all i call, then told to write a letter at the end of year to say that my order did not live. I have not hear from them as of today 02-16-09.Would like replacement please.

Giant Blueberries,n28085,Strawberry tree T20501.Not sure of told order, sent paper work with letter.

Stan of Barefoot Bay, FL February 12, 2009

Received from my son as a gift: Three giant tomato trees. Cost about 12.00. I did recive three small tomato trees intact. One was completely dead. Two others did survuve.

Planted the remaining two trees. They grew to four feet, and then died overnight. Turned brown in 48 hours. False advertising to grow to eight feet. RTheir growth rate are false. Why doesn't the state opf Michigan prosecute this copmpany?

William of Longs, SC February 2, 2009

ordered one royal paulownia tree, said to grow 10 feet a year, 3yrs only 2 feet. they are hard people to get up with.

John of Placerville, CA October 13, 2008

In February 2008, I ordered 45.90 plus shipping 9.95 totaling 53.83 of plants from gardners choice thru a catalog. I planted the plants as directed even though they looked dry to me. Within one week they were DEAD. I wrote to the company in March 2008 and asked them to honor their satisfaction gurantee and send me another order of healthier plants. They also advertise that they would sned the plants when they are safe to plant. Not tru as we had two more frosts after I planted the plants.

I did not hear from gardners Choice so I wrote to them again in June 2008. No response again. At this time my Father got terminally il and just passed away in Sept. 2008. gardners Choice was put on the back burner. How does this comapny get away with all of the complaints posted? Doesn't anybody care anymore and why does the BBB and the licensing dept.do nothing about it?

I would like my full refund refunded to me with the S&H fee included. I would also like to get some extra monies from this company for all of my labor and the water used. Another 50.00 would be sufficient.

Tammy of Glendale Heights, IL August 23, 2008

Placed below order and planted when received. Since June still waiting for indoor tomatoes. No signs yet. Claims to produce tomatoes INSIDE! RIGHT! This plant in in full sunny spot and is watered as needed because it sits right in front of MY VIEW every morning in front of my home office! Yep still nothing.

Rainbow Peppers? 5 plants ONLY produced PURPLE PEPPERS the entire summers. I sent email with this complaint and also advised I have been planting since I was three so I know HOW TO PLANT! Indoor Tomatoes (3 Plants) 3 Plants for 4.98; Rainbow Bell Peppers (5 Plants) 5 Plants for 6.98

Because of all of the cases of salmonella this year, people dont and are afraid to buy anything in stores. I decided this year to grow organically. My family consumers alot of tomatoes and peppers all year round. Sorry to have companys advertise for items and get other results.
