Ines of Old Bridge, NJ August 7, 2009

In 2007 I did a whole kitchen make over and purchased all GE profile appliances.  I am the only person in my household so I seldom use my dishwasher.  My family was recently over for dinner so I loaded the dishwasher I smelled something burning. My son immediataly opened the door and noticed the heating coil was burning hot. The bottom of the dishwasher surrounding the coil was all cracked from the severe heat. The model #PDW7380J10SS. I went on line to see if there were any recalls and to my surprise this problem has been an occurance on many models over a long period of time. How can I get this problem resolved? I don't feel it should be my responsibilty to pay for this.

Our 1-1/2 year old Cafe Series dishwasher over heated in the dry cycle and melted the wheels off the bottom basket. Also melted several plastic containers on the top basket.

B. of Arvada , CO July 27, 2009

We have owned our GE Profile Stainless Steel dishwasher for only 1 1/2 years and there are only 2 of us in the house so it is not run more than two times each week. We ran the dishwasher over night and woke up to find heating element ran long after the end of the cycle and was still hot. The granite counter top was hot enough to burn our hands and the dishracks, spin arm and bottom of the dish drain cover had melted as a result of the defective heating element. I feel strongly that had we had a standard countertop with the wood base the house would have caught on fire. This unit retails for 1,400.00 and could have cost us our lives! The first call with GE does not sound promissing that they will stand behind the product.

Holly of Beaverton, OR July 24, 2009

Our GE Profile Stainless dishwasher malfunctioned similar to many other posts when the element did not shut off when the cycle completed. As it turns out the control unit was melted and was the root cause of the issue. On my model, this is mounted inside the door. I discussed this at length with the Repair Technician and he indicated that while the original part is good, it does occasionally fail. The replacement control unit is heavier duty and supposedly so are the ones going into the new units.

My GE Profile Dishwasher, Model # PDW8400J10CC recently had the following problem; of one of the wheels at the bottom rack burned off (literally fell off). The rack itself also shows a burn on that spot. I called GE and they are sending a replacement rack but I feel that this type of problem may be a fire hazard and should possibly be recalled and or replaced.

We purchased a new home in August of 2007 and it came with GE Appliances. We have had to have our dishwasher repaired twice the first year. Then, last night, the heating element stayed on after the dishwasher turned off and melted not only the contents of the dishwasher, but some of the parts in the dishwasher. We're lucky the house didn't catch on fire! From reading the posts on this web site, it sounds like this is a problem that has happened to others, which is why I'm reporting this. From reading the posts, it doesn't sound like GE is willing to take responsibility, so we are going to just purchase a new dishwasher -- and not a GE!

Brian of Hudson, WI July 1, 2009

We have had our new GE Profile dishwasher just over three years when my wife and children said something smelled funny. I went downstairs and could smell something burning. As I was checking the kitchen, I opened the dishwasher and was almost knocked over by the heat that was released. Not only were plates broken and the plastic dishes in the dishwasher melted, but the wheels on the bottom rack, the silverwear rack and other internal components to the dishwasher itself were melted.

When my wife called GE service, they said that they would pay for the parts but not the labor to install. Whent eh repairman came out, he indicated that extreme heat and related melting of dishes and inside of the dishwasher itself was not an uncommon problem. It took approximately two months between when we made the first service call to when we received all the parts that needed replacing. It cost me 130 to repair a defective GE product.

Luckily it did not cost me my house or family. It is appalling that GE knows of these problems and does not address them. I have contacted GE again and have indicated I do not intend on paying for the labor since this is a known problem. I also indend on following up with the repair provider. Unfortunately, they are caught in the middle and based on GE's attitude so far, I would expect GE to stiff them with the bill.

Susan of Hicksville, NY June 11, 2009

I purchased a GE Profile Dishwasher (PDW 9200N20BB)and it almost put my house on fire. The dishwasher was not on but the heating element remained on melted the entire inside of the dishwasher (as well as dishes and pots and pans in the dishwasher) while we were out of the house. If we did not return home when we did, the house would have been on fire. Dishwasher destroyed. Loss of good dishes. Approx. 7 hours of electricity (LIPA)wasted. Smell of burning plastic that radiates through the house. Dealing with GE was horrible. Very unncooperative.

My expensive stainless steel dishwasher with the upgraded, foldable rack system is junk. The foldable plastic portion of the rack breaks/and/or chips my dishes. When I called to ask for a plain rack without the upgrade feature, I was told I was out of luck as that was a "consumable" item much like a water filter! I called everyone else they refered me too within their division and got same answer over again. If a dishwasher breaks your dishes, why bother having one? If they rack is consumable as they say, then the dishwasher must be a throwaway item too. No more GE products for me ever again. They won't stand behind their product. Great job at keeping return customers, GE!

Cyndi of Kingston, GA May 21, 2009

We purchased a GE Profile Stainless Dishwasher in April 2008 due to the fact that our other ge profile dishwasher had a recall on it that could cause a fire. Before this the other GE Profile we had was also recalled due to the crack on the tub. We purchased the SS dishwasher thinking they would have improved. NO...GE can't get it right the first time. Now the heating element stays on after the wash cycle is complete. This is a fire hazard. We havebeen blessed that we have not had a fire from starting the wash beofrebed time then the heat being on all night. I want to get this on replaced with no money out of our pocket. Pitiful ge.
