GE, Kenmore Recall Microwave Combo Wall Ovens

Veronica of New York NY (09/18/08)
GE Spacemaker oven handle brook off and GE customer rep. asked me to pay for a new handle and install it on my own, saying this is normal wear. The oven was 600 and for that price I expect better quality. The handle is attached in a way that makes replacement difficult for a lay person.

Jennell of Tucson AZ (09/17/08)
The GE over-the-range microwave that came with the home that my husband and I purchased 3 years ago, just quit heating up. NO warning, just stopped! The model is a Spacemaker XL-1800 and when we checked our warranty it was (of Course) for a year only. So we called the GE 800 number and they offered to send someone out for 70.00 just to look at it, not including parts and labor. We proceeded to check prices on a new one and they range around 379.00 to 400.00.

I checked the consumers affairs website and i see that there are many complaints on these GE models. We have decided to go with another vender to replace this micdrowave since it seems as though GE is not maufacturing a quality product. I have had microwaves in the past by other venders and they have lasted from 6 to 10 years. I am very dissapointed and with this company. With the economy being the way it is and my husband was out of work for 3 months after being laid off, I am not a happy consumer.

Have to purchase a new one on a tight budget.

I was melting butter in the microwave and saw large flashes (larger than sparks) from the top surface inside the microwave.

I have had this microwave less than 2 years. It has a one year full warranty and a 5 year warranty. I checked on the GE service website and was instructed that there would be a 79 service charge just to look at it. With parts and labor it will certainly cost more to repair than replace. To make things worse, if I just replace it then I am stuck with a piece of junk that would just sit in a landfill, but I probably can't throw it out because it's likely hazardous waste.

Donna of Loxahatchee, FL September 15, 2008

Donna of Loxahatchee FL (09/15/08)
on 10/09/06 i purchased a GE undermount spacemaker XL microwave oven at Home Depot for 571.91. Two days ago while using the microwave for microwave popcorn, i heard a strange noise and observed sparks coming from the sides of the microwave. from that point, it stopped working. I contacted the ge service repair and scheduled a service call.

today, the repairman told me that the magnetrob tube had to be replaced and the total cost would be 381.11. For a microwave that is less than two years old and only had a one year warranty i felt this amount was outrageous. not only that but i had to pay for a service call in the amount of 69.95 for him to tell me that it will cost me 381.11 to fix the problem. this is disgusting and an outrage for consumers like me. i will never but a ge product again.

Purchased a GE spacesaver over the oven in July 2008 and have been having a code PF...Power failure. I have read several complaints regarding this unit. It is still under warrantee can I just trade it for another model.
