GE Microwaves Prone to Spontaneous Fire, Suit Claims
GE, Kenmore Recall Microwave Combo Wall Ovens

Virginia of Aliquippa, PA September 23, 2009

On Memorial Day, 2009, my daughter was making a baked potato in the microwave. It was punctured and the time was set for minutes which should have produced a nice baked potato. Instead, the microwave began making a popping sound and smoke began to pour from the oven. Upon entering the kitchen to investigate, flames were visible inside the microwave oven. I immediately hit the cancel button and unplugged it. The damage was done. The microwave was just over 1 year old.

Wendy of Seattle, WA September 23, 2009

Failure to heat. The microwave will work for about one second and then just stop. Need to purchase a new microwave.

thomas of McKees Rocks, PA September 20, 2009

There was a loud bang, a flash, and then the items in the micromwave caught fire. I quickly stopped the microwave but the fire/arcing melted the plastic clips that held the metal rack in place.

Sharon of Morristown, NJ September 20, 2009

On the evening of September 19th, 2009, while making Popcorn - the microwave started popping itself followed by an electrical fire (I could actually see a flame) inside the oven over on its upper left side, which, upon the discovery - I immediately stopped the oven, then unplugged it just to make sure that it was completely off! I could just imagine what might have transpired had I not been right there at the time! A very frightening experience. Needless to say - I will be purchasing another Microwave oven, however it will not be another GE.

Linda of Pittsburgh, PA September 19, 2009

My fairly new microwave started zapping when we put anything in it. Last week when my son was defrosting a hamburger, the microwave starting zapping, then it sparked the top of the unit and left 2 burn marks inside. My son was right there and stopped the microwave. We are terrified to use this microwave

Cindy of Sewickley, PA September 17, 2009

My GE microwave started zapping for unknown reasons and then caught fire. I called GE and asked if there was a known problem like this with their microwaves, and they denied it. Now I see that others are having the same problem with their microwaves. Had to replace the microwave.

Linda of Latrobe, PA September 16, 2009

My GE microwave starting zapping strangely while my daughter and her friend were making popcorn. It was still under warranty so I contacted GE and they replaced it with the same model. About a year went by and the replacement started doing the same thing. Now it cannot be used for certain items like popcorn or small amounts of bacon because it starts to zap and I immediately turn it off. Although I can see how it could start a fire if there weren't someone nearby to stop it.

GE Turntable Microwave Oven, Model JES831WF001,Serial MF900734B mfd July 2003

Approximately six (6) months ago, the microwave began operating unassisted. It runs randomly and will not stop under this condition with the STOP button; it must be unplugged or the door opened to cease operation.

The microwave is fortunately in an staffed office, thus we were immediately aware of this condition. It now remains unplugged. This is just for informational purposes as we saw a story on WTAE-TV Pittsburgh regarding issues with GE microwaves.

Debbie of Coraopolis, PA September 14, 2009

We bought a spacesaver, over the range microwave in November, 1997. It was brand new. The model #JVM1350BW002, serial #V59552485S. Recently, the handle broke off when we were opening the door. I also have had the following problem. It has a metal rack that rests on the sides with holders. In the 13th month of use, one month after the warranty had expired, I was using the microwave with the rack in place. There were sparks and the holder's cover completely burned off and I was not able to use the wire rack any longer.

I contacted GE immediately, and they told me there was nothing they could do since the warranty had expired. I still usde the microwave without the rack. I will not purchase another GE microwave.

I suppose there is nothing that can be done at this point, but I just heard that other consumers were having problems with their ovens, and I wanted to register my complaint. The covering on the holder in the microwave for the wire rack completely burned off and the metal is exposed. I no longer use the rack as I do not want to have 2 metals surfaces touching.

Cindy of Blairsville, PA September 14, 2009

I was watching channel 4 (pghchannel.com) news. They mentioned problems with GE microwaves catching fire without warning. I own a GE profile Spacemaker 11 Sensor microwave, model # JEM31SA 002, Serial # RA 901405B which was manufactured August 2001. For the last couple months this microwave has been stopping and throwing my circuit breaker almost every day. I am concerned with it catching on fire.
