Louise of San Diego CA (07/08/08) When we remodeled our kitchen we installed all GE appliances. Our glass cooktop started needing repairs within three years after purchase. Repairmen told us the thermostats were faulty. A burner would be set on simmer when suddenly, without any warning, go into the highest heat setting. The only way to control the temperature would be to turn the burner completely off. It would either be on the highest heat setting or off, nothing in between. That means someone had to be watching the burners every second while cooking. Nothing could be put on simmer and left for any period of time, even one or two minutes.
I contacted the GE consumer division and told them of the fire hazard. Nothing was done except to send a letter telling me they would replace a burner for no charge if it failed within three months. Of course none of the burners managed to fail within that time frame. We also purchased a GE dishwasher that needed multiple repairs. We replaced that appliance also. The problems with the dishwasher were only annoyances and inconveniences, not fire dangers.
It cost us 594.93 in total repairs incurred at various times for replacing the burners. We had pans that were badly damaged by the sudden high heat when we weren't aware the thermostat failed. At the last repair visit In April, 2008 I was informed parts are no longer available. Since then I have been looking for a replacement cooktop. It will most certainly NOT be a GE. Arleene of Surprise AZ (06/24/08) I turned on the self cleaning feature on my GE oven. About 20 minutes later I heard a pop. Even my two kids said what was that? I went to the stove and saw that the inside glass in the oven had shattered into pieces.
I called GE and at first they told me I would have to pay a service call of 80 plus whatever other fees to repair it. I told them I shouldn't have to pay for anything because I believed that it was a defect in the oven. The person told me it could have been many things that could have caused the glass to shatter. I asked to speak to a manager. She waived the service fee and had someone come and look at it.
When the serviceman arrived the next day, he said it could have been a crack on the glass and when it heated up it caused it to break or he says for all I know something could have fallen on it to make it break how do I know I wasn't here the serviceman said. He told me that GE would waive the price of the glass but I would still be responsible for the repair fees which are 130.00. I do not have money to be throwing away especially when I know for a fact that there was no crack on the glass. I know there must be some sort of a defect. Maurice of Laguna Woods, CA June 11, 2008
Maurice of Laguna Woods CA (06/11/08) We Completely overhauled our kitchen about 4 years ago and unfortunately bought all G. E. appliances. Our stve oven which cost about double required 8service calls before G.E. would replace it. after about 2 1/2 years the back burner does not work. Fortunately we rare use it. Now a feew months the microwave does not work. We paid 400. for this microwave G.E JVM1870 and it breaks down evry year. I will never purchase anything named G.E. again. I would not brag about thier service iether. Betty of Vermilion, OH June 7, 2008
Betty of Vermilion OH (06/07/08) This evening the inner glass on the oven door of my GE XL44 shattered and all of the pieces of glass were either on the floor or in the storage drawer. The exterior glass and interior glass remained intact. The oven was not on and had not been used the past 24 hours. Just reporting the problem so that others who have this model can be aware of problem.
After reading the problems that others have had with much newer GE products, I will not be replacing it with a GE gas oven. Sad Millie of Perry Hall, MD June 1, 2008
Millie of Perry Hall MD (06/01/08) We moved into our new Condo on 7-13-2005. All the appliances were new and all GE. In March of 2006 we were forced to buy a new washer because it would have cost more to fix than to buy a new one. We were not happy but we had always had GE Appliances and thought this was just bad luck so we moved on. In May of 2008 I started smelling gas, just a little and then It got worst and I called BGE Gas CO. They came out and turned the gas off because it was leaking and said we would need to get a service man out. When the service man came out the stove was leaking in four places and said it woild be cheaper to buy a new one.
What is going on with GE? New Appliances should last a lot longer than 3 or 4 years.I will be contacting GE but for some reason I don't think they really care. If they did they would hold their Name and Appliances to a higher standdard. The model of the stove is JGBP33WEH3W
I have been with out a stove for almost 2 weeks now and been looking for a new one. You can bet one thing it won't be a GE. Monica of Silverdale, WA May 12, 2008
