GE Ice Dispensers Serve Up More Than Ice

Sonia of Somerset, NJ May 5, 2009

I had previously filed a complaint about having 4 services calls made to my home for the same part on my oven. Customer service contacted me today about the complaint. Their resolution was for me to wait until the next time it fails, have service rep come out (which will cost me an additional 190) and while he is here have him contact GE and try to do a diagnostic test.

I told the customer service agent I am not happy with this resolution because GE should have done this while they were here for the 2nd, 3rd or 4th visit. Why do I have to wait for my oven to fail again in another 6mos or a year for GE to solve this problem? THIS IS HORRENDOUS! I would also like to add that when I gave the agent the invoice number for the last repair, it did not match the job done. Is this how GE covers up multiple visits to one home?

I am very disappointed with my GE product that I purcahsed on 6/8/01. On April 21, GE had to make their 4th service call for my oven. The ignitor keeps failing. The visits made previously were 6/3/03, 3/7/08 and 3/21/08. When I called on 4/19 for this last service call, I was told the service would be 99.95. When the service rep showed up, I was told 174.99. I was already upset that I had to have someone come out for a 4th time for the same part but then the bait and switch on the price upset me even more.I did not purchase a service agreement yet because I thought I would be able to buy a little more time before spending that kind of money during a RECESSION!

We remodeled the kitchen with all new stainless steel appliances. I selected the GE Profile glass top slide in range, which is great - I love the glass top gas. But what you don'e hear about is the fan that coninually runs to keep the digital controlls cool. This blows hot air out the vents continually while the oven is on and it is even worse when the door is opened to remove cooked items. The hot air blasts the room.

In Arizona, this was a poor choice - I will not be cooking in the summer. There was no one to relay this information, and I think it would be important to a lot of people. It is worse when the convenction is on. They say that the fan shuts off when the door is opened, but that is 30 sec after the door is opened, enough time to blast the room with very hot air. Not happy with the way this product is engineered.

Recently bought a new Adora gas cooktop and oven. The oven has a horrible chemical burn-off problem! I have looked online and many other people have been complaining about how unacceptably long it takes for the oven to stop emitting a strong chemical stink. After cycling the oven to 500F and back several times, we decided to try a SELF CLEAN cycle to try to burn off whatever toxic chemicals are still stuck in this thing.

This caused the oven (no food was ever cooked in it) to emit enough smoke to leave yellow smoke residue on the top of the door an burner knobs. I complained to GE and got this response - A blanket of fiberglass insulation is used around the oven cavity of GE ranges. An acrylic binder is used to hold the fiberglass insulation blanket together while it is handled during assembly of the range. This binder will decompose at elevated temperatures, resulting in the emission of odor and fumes the first few times the oven is used.

The Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for the insulation, which contains emission levels and occupational exposure limits for the decomposition products of the acrylic binder. These limits are established based on throat and eye irritation; however, some people are more sensitive to the fumes than others and are irritated by the low-level emissions from a range. In these cases, it is advisable to establish some kind of ventilation during the first few uses of the oven, such as opening a window or turning on an exhaust fan (see Use & Care Guide).

Since the MSDS is written in the context of occupational exposure, it may be difficult to understand or apply to a household environment. The emissions from GE ranges have been fully disclosed and reviewed at many levels, and we are certain that they do not pose a health hazard to people. However, if you have concerns or questions relating to emission levels contained in the MSDS, you are encouraged to contact your personal physician for clarification on how they may affect you specifically. WHAT?!?

I'm am supposed to ask my doctor about their fuming insulation?? Imagine if this were a car -We recommend that you drive with the windows open for the first 500 miles of operation... The customer should NOT be the one left to deal with the horrible smelling side effects of GE's manufacturing process. Especially from a company that touts itself for it's Green products. I, for one, would gladly pay extra for a stink free product!

My problem is deciding whether or not repair this GE oven for the ignite burner or buy a new one. The piece of equipments just 25-30 bucks, but these repair people want 75 just to show up and tell me what I already know, then tack on another 200 if I let them fix it. A comparable new oven will cost around 600-750, not including the installation fee.

The only thing I can decide on is the fact I don't want to feed dead horse--meaning what else may go wrong with this GE junk that has no warranty. Also, after reading all the complaints in this thread, I definitely will not be buying another GE oven. This piece put out by GE came with my new house, which I've only been in for 6 years now. What a piece of unliable junk. I'm in the poor house over this unexpected repair or replacement issue.
