GE Ice Dispensers Serve Up More Than Ice

Sherry of Bismarck, AR April 1, 2009

Sherry of Bismarck AR (04/01/09)
My stove was less than one year old when it started chipping down thru the enamel on the top of the stove under the burner pans. All of the burners have been affected. I went to Sears to register a complaint but the person I needed to see was not in both times I went in last Sept and Nov. Today April 1, 2009 I went in to see if anything could be done, but the warranty was up in Feb, 09. I want to know if any of this same model has had more complaints about this kind of chipping around each of the burners. I do not know who to call about having it looked at and see if it can be repaired.

Our 9 year old GE Oven (Gas) caught fire tonight when my wife turned the oven on. The heat was so intense that the steel plate inside and on the bottom warped. I shut the gas off and we got the fire out without the fire dept. The whole house smells. This oven is a safety issue big time..

GE Spectra XL 44 Model: JGBP30WEA3WW and Serial: SV213982P. The oven was bought new in 1999 with a new house. The heating element was replaced by GE Service some years ago.

I have a Dynasty range model # DGRSC-36-4CB that has the same ignition problem as the recalled models. If you open the oven door at the wrong time you are greeted with a blue ball of flame. The gas is on too long before it ignites. Even when you don't open the door there is an explosive ignition when the oven goes on.

We purchased our new home in September of 2005 with all new GE appliances. The heating element caught on fire in our oven. Called GE and they came out to repair it which the tech said it was normal to happen since I use the self cleaning. The defrost element in the freezer went out and had to call a repair man. Three months later discovered that the freezer is freezing but it is running continuously. Am having somebody out today to see if the control board needs to be replace. I will never purchase GE again and if something else go wrongs with our appliance I will just purchase something from Kenmore. I have had Kenmore before and have never had any problems.

On Feb. 18, 2009, I called GE after having used their web page to register my complaints about my electric range. That time I spoke with Dborah and made no progress and was transferred to her supervisor (no name). She promised that she would contact the repairman who had been to my house concerning the issues with the oven door of my GE range. She stated that within 24 hours, the repairman should report to her and she would contact me with additional information.

On March 2, I called the customer service again and spoke with Miss Peters. I explained the nature of my complaint and she assured me that she would email Dborah to make sure that the matter was dealt with. It's now March 5 and still no word from GE. My original email communication with them about this defect began around January 9. In the meantime, my range is still defective with a brown burn caused by a jet of hot air escaping from the top of the oven door. The range was purchased 7 years ago and the same part was replaced about one and a half years later due to an identical burn. In addition, the repairman at that time replaced the oven door gasket. Apparently that was not the source of the hot air escape.

Now around 5 years later, the replaced part has the same burn indicating a problem, perhaps a safety hazard. In January while the GE repairman was in my kitchen repairing a defective part in my refrigerator, my wife showed him the oven door. He said that in that model he had seen similar burns on several. However, due to the fact that mine is white, the burn shows up and is more noticeable. That indicated to me that there is potentially something defective in the design of some of the GE units. The range is model #JBP66WOB4; serial # ZA1 153230. GE is now ignoring my calls, emails, and one letter sent to them. It is as if they are intentional in their neglect.

The oven door visible damage caused 2 times has already been addressed. However, although the range has a self-cleaning option, we have never used it for fear that it is a potential fire hazard and we do not want to risk it. In other words, this feature of the range is not usable as a result. They are not willing to take any responsibilty for a potential design flaw because the original warranty has already run out. If the design flaw is only discovered after the expiration, then it's the consumer's problem not GE's even though their product has proven to be faulty through no excessive wear or usage other than normal for a household.
