GE Refrigerators: Cooling Problems |

Danni of houston, TX September 13, 2009 They are just pathetic same stories. GE wants you to purchase warranties because they know you will need them. Refrigerator was repaired 3 times for the same problems. We just decided to turn off the ice maker and buy ice by the bag and keep in my deep freezer made by a different company which I have never had 1 problem with. susan of Lusby, MD September 12, 2009 We have a GE refrigerator that is just one year old and our story is much like everyone elses.First the freezer temps started going up and down so the repairman came out and replaced a part. That's when the refrigerator joined the freezer in wild temp swings. We have had two control boards installed a new compressor a fan, evaporator, etc.. Long story short we have had no cooling in over two months. Five service calls with no results and now they're going to install the third control board. We are trying to live out of a very compact refrigerator that we bought. I have asked for a replacement as has the repair company. They want to replace parts until we give up. Any suggestions on what we can do to get theri attention? One person posted they did get a replacement. How did you accomplish this? Thanks for the help. Crystal of Grover Beach, CA September 12, 2009 In 2005, we remodelled our home and placed all new GE Profile appliances in it. I have had multiple problems with all of them. I had been told we were just very rough on our appliances. Funny, the appliances we had before were over 15 years old and we hadn't broken those. Anyway, on 9-9-09, our ice dispenser stopped making ice and the water stopped working. Water leaked on our hardwood floors. I spent hours trying to keep the floor dry so it wouldn't get ruined. By 9-10-09, my husband and I get home from work and find our entire fridge and freezer hot with spoiled food inside. I had just stocked up on frozen food and groceries for 2 weeks, so about 300 worth of food was ruined. GE was ok. The control board and fan are out, just like everyone else's. This problem is so common they have a program for it. I guess I shouldn't complain, as they were sending it to me for free, though I do have to pay the technician 150 to repair it. As for the food, GE offered me 100 in food reimbursement. I guess it is my fault I didn't use my psychic powers and chose to stock up on a freezer full of frozen items at the wrong time. As far as my fridge, this part was expected to arrive at my house in 5-7 days, THEN I would schedule with a technician. I told their customer service that with two kids and family coming, that being without a refrigerator and freezer in the SUMMER for up to two weeks was unacceptable. I demanded that they pay for a small dorm size fridge to keep at least milk and lunch meats cold. Working in public health, there are a plethora of food borne illnesses you can get from food not stored properly. I told GE that living out of an ice chest for two weeks wasn't my idea of reasonable. Finally, they promised to ship my parts same day air. Now, today is 9-12-09. Saturday. Even if I can get the part and the technician here on Monday, that is 3.5 days with no refrigerator. I am 34 years old. I have a lifetime to buy products left in me. I have family, friends, and coworkers who will be buying products as well. I can honestly say that GE products are not only a waste of money, they are a waste of time. The time you spend wiping up floors, cleaning rotted food out of fridges, rewashing dishes the dishwasher didn't clean, etc will be a waste. I can't even say you get what you pay for, because I paid a LOT for these products...and they were rated highly by consumer reports when I purhased them in 2005. I wish I had stuck with my ugly, old, but working appliances. At least my food was not in an ice chest. Joan of Collegeville, PA September 11, 2009 My daughter purchased a new GE Profile refrigerator for us from the above mentioned store. The refrigerator was delivered and installed by the men who delivered the refrigerator and the water and ice section did not work. We called and complained that this was a brand new refrigerator that was costly and did not do what we expected it to do. They proceeded to tell us they would have a GE repairman come to our home and check it out. The service department at GE told us they could not have someone out for about two weeks, so the store sent someone out from another repair service who proceeded to check it out. Several days later the GE service repairman came out and told us an entirely different part of the refrigerator was broken. He said we would order the part. We called the store and asked for them to give us another refrigerator that worked, and told them that this was a lemon. The manager became nasty and finally told us he would have another brand new refrigerator delivered to us in two days. He told us our business was valued since we were repeat customers, having purchased a new dishwasher the previous week. He lied, he said his delivery people would go to Harrisburg to get this new refrigerator and deliver it to us. He never sent them to Harrisburg for a new refrigerator, they confirmed this when they came back to repair the refrigerator after a GE repairman came out and wanted to repair the part that was broken, but we told him that the store was replacing the refrigerator with another one. So he left. We called to find out when they were coming to exchange the refrigerators, and he told us that my daughter lied to him about the refrigerator part coming in the mail. She never mentioned the part in her conversation with him, he made up the entire story so he would not lose money by getting back the damaged refrigerator and not being able to resell it. My entire kitchen was destroyed by pulling out this refrigerator, I had to have my stove pulled out and was unusable for about a week during this time we waited for them to make good on this refrigerator, and costly, as we had to go out for meals. My carpet in the kitchen will never be the same, as they destroyed the carpet pulling it out so many times. We have never heard from this store since we agreed to just have them repair it, they have never called to appologize for the inconvenience they caused us or the stress they caused. joyce of boca raton, FL September 10, 2009 I purchased a ge profile refrigerator 3 years ago and have had nothing but trouble with it since .the thermostat never worked from day 1.i never had a refrigerator with one, so never realized this until the right side French door broke and the repair man came to fix it. Then charged me for this repair. Now the left door broke and don’t know if I should call him as I don’t know the cost of this repair. (If the door is not closed completely the temperature starts getting warmer. I am a working person and am very disappointed in this product. I would suggest that a person buy any other product but ge. Venkat of Newington, CT September 9, 2009 GE Model:PTS22SCS - controller board (motherboard) malfunctioned. 09/09/09. The Ge service rep came took 10 minutes and charged 286.00 (160 for 10 minutes labor + 110 for the board + tax). How can the top brand GE profile refrigerator go bad in 3 1/2 years? I have other people complain about the controller board here. I just want to post mine. I do not recommend GE profile. Tané of Highlands Ranch, CO September 8, 2009 I recetly bought a whole kitchen of GE appliances - 10,000. The appliances are just over 2 months old and both the fridge and dishwasher have gone bad. The fridge doors had to be replaced which took 6 weeks. The dishwasher heating element kept running long after the cycle was over creating a fire hazard. After repeatedly being told that the part for the dishawsher was on backorder GE delivered and installed a new dishwasher which leaked and damaged my hardwood floors. GE and its representaitves are rude and unresponsive. I have wasted more than 6 days of vacation time dealing with GE and I still do not have a working dishwasher. The leaking dishwasher has destroyed my hardwood floors and GE's insurance company will not even respond. The floors have to be torn out displacing me from my kitchen for more than a week. Tim of Ruston, LA August 31, 2009 I own a side by side model numberGSS25KSTE SS. I would say in general this is a well made refrigerator (although I was surprised it is made in Mexico) The up side is that all of the refrigerator parts are well made and appear as if they will last a long time. It's a nice looking unit. The down side is that the ice maker(door type) is the biggest piece of junk ever made. It literlly takes more than 40 seconds to fill a small glass with ice. And then the ice maker gets stuck all of the time which means you have to open everything up and unjamb it some how. For some odd reason the engineers at GE designed the ice container in the freezer to tilt away from the door opening which means it takes for ever for ice (if there is any ice in the container) to actually get into your glass. I can tell GE now that I will never ever buy another GE product as long as I live. They should be ashamed to put out an ice maker that is so untested. I would love to get my money back on this thing but I know there is no chance for that. Buyer be ware. Robert of Folsom, CA August 30, 2009 I have a GE side by side refrigerator, model GSS25JFMCWW that I purchased in 1992. The motherboard fails on it every 16 months or so. After a lot of trying, I talked to someone at GE today. They said they'd give me 400 off a new refrigerator, and that I have 30 days to take them up on it. The answer is a flat NO. The catch is that you have to purchase it on their www.geappliances.com website. You can buy the same refrigerator for a lot less in stores. So, their offer isn't worth the effort. Plus I'd end up with another GE. Do not, by any means, purchase ANY GE appliance. They are very unreliable. Further, GE does not stand behind their products. The same part in my refrigerator failed three times. I also have evidence that during the period, GE knew that the problem was systemic. As an engineer, it seems to me that they easily could have re-engineered the part and come up with a fix. Since the same part for my refrigerator keeps failing, it is obvious that they just like selling parts that are doomed to failure. They deserve to go out of business due to a lack of goodwill amongst their customer base. If you are not a customer of GE yet, I strongly suggest that you do not become one. I will never purchase another GE appliance. Chris of Washington , DC August 28, 2009 It's frightening to see all the complaints about the GE Profile Refrigerator and, in particular, problems with the temp control. Ours has gone up and down wildly on a number of occasions. I, too, have the extended warranty. I thought that when the temp control problem started just 18 months after purchase that it would be repaired. I was wrong. GE has been out five times to fix it and it has not worked. It's pretty clear that the technicians don't know what to do yet GE refuses to acknowledge this and offer a new fridge. On my last service call, the technician didn't even show up and when I called the service center, I had to leave a message. I've left several and no one has called back. I just scheduled YET ANOTHER repair through GE and wrote a letter to the head of customer relations. When I spoke to GE last time, I asked the representative whether they would take their car back to the same garage five times to fix the same problem. She, of course, answered "yes, I would". This is the level of stupidity we have to endure from a giant company that clearly refuses to fix its mistakes. DON'T BUY THE GE PROFILE REFRIGERATOR!! OR ANY GE PRODUCTS FOR THAT MATTER. YOU'LL REGRET IT! Report Your Experience
