GE Ice Dispensers Serve Up More Than Ice

Quite a few things can go wrong with GE refrigerators and, as the complaints in this section show, getting problems fixed is anything but easy.

A few recent complaints ...

Col. of Vienna VA (09/16/08)
On 10Sep08 I scheduled a service call for my GE Refrigerator under my Service Contract Number 233-1451504. The service call was confirmed via e-mail and telephone for 16Sep08 between 8:00AM and 12:00 PM. At 8:00 AM I called  to confirm the service call and to ascertain if they could narrow down the service call time. They told me that the technician was scheduled between 8:00 AM and 12:00 PM but that they would let me know any changes.

I called again at 10:00 with same results. I called again at 12:15 PM and they had not idea where the technician was! Technician arrived at 12:48 PM in a very surly mood, changed the water valve and left at 1:12 PM. I did not ever bother to have him clean up the mess he made because I could see that he was annoyed.

I wasted 4 hours and 48 minutes of my time waiting for technician to arrive. I understand that often technicians meet unexpected problems and emergencies but that is no reason not to keep the customers involved. I spoke with Consumer Relations Department twice and both times I was left holding and finally gave up.

John of Foresthill, MD September 16, 2008

John of Foresthill MD (09/16/08)
On or about 6:00 am,Tuesday,September 2,2008,I discovered that the light/temp control fixture on the interior top of my model LFC256760TT refrigerator had overheated. It overheated to the extent that it burned the bulb sockets and adjacent enclosure and severely blistered the liner behind the heat shield. The door was closed when I made this discover and the temperature was at set-point.

I am an ISA Certified Instrument Technician for an engineering firm which enables me to pool technical resources. From the pool, a Sr. Electrical Engineer concluded that the fixture is thermally under-rated (at very least) or there is an intermittent wiring defect (at worst). An intermittent wiring defect is sufficient enough to cause severe property damage and/or personal injury. Either way, this is an engirneering safety recall issue.

The service technician that responded to my initial inquiry was excellent. Nonetheless, he indicated their inability to do more than replace the damaged parts on the refrigerator. I am convinced that this overlooks the root cause of this potentially hazardous condition and is nothing but a stop gap measure to get an inherently defective piece of equipment through its warranty period. My wife and I are simply afraid to use this refrigerator because of it's fire hazard.

I purchased our side by side refigerator from Home Depot in 2004. It was 1200. We had freezing issues from the time it was a few months old. The ice would stick together or melt. there was ice build up on the back of the freezer. Sometimes the food would freeze in the refrigerator section. We have had numerous problems over the years and they still continue.

Everyone has been sick off and on in our house and my son might have exploratory surgery for his stomach. All of these years his stomach problems were probably related to the GE fridge. Our food is melting in the freezer and all of the food is going bad in our refrigerator. I don't know how long the food in our fridge was going bad without knowing it (certain things don't look bad even when they are), but I blamed it on the store I bought it from. Our refigerator is on a recall and class action law suit but we were only offered 300 towards a new refrigerator. That would not cover 1/3 of the cost for a new one.

Our whole family has been sick more often for the last 5 years and my 10 year old is thought to have stomach prolbems that he is having checked by having a camera put down his throat, blood tests, and barium followed by an xray. We have had to throw out about 500-1000 worht of food in the last few years.

4/8/05 -Purchased GE HotPoint Refrigerator model # PSC23NGPBCC 4/5/06 - Technician to fix WIND SOUND coming from fridge. Said it was a faulty Control Board, GE had been having a problem with them AND IT WOULD PROBABLY happen again!

Under Warranty 8/12/08 - Wind Sound VERY BAD. Technician out to fix it again. He said GE had changed suppliers of the Control Panels but it may STILL happen again! The wind sound is a compressor, we're told. Charged 169.55! When they predicted this would happen again and it did! I am livid! They should have Recalled This Model if their techs could adequately predict that this faulty control board would break down again. This was a 2,177.00 appliance, with faults they knew about... Why was it even being offered? Why is it only being rectified with this band aid approach, and WE'RE having to foot the bill! OUTRAGEOUS General Electric! AND Bill Smith Appliances for making this product available!

I own a 3 yr. old GE Profile refrigerator. The lights indicating the temp. went out, and I was looking at a repair bill. After reading many posts, I decided my problem must be the motherboard. I went to town and purchased the part for 114 + tax, installed it, and it's working again. The install was easy. Don't pay to have this done. It's a lot less aggravating than waiting on the repairman and much cheaper.
