GE Ice Dispensers Serve Up More Than Ice

Quite a few things can go wrong with GE refrigerators and, as the complaints in this section show, getting problems fixed is anything but easy.

A few recent complaints ...

Rene of Anaheim Hills CA (09/09/08)
I purchased a GE Monogram Refrigerator/Freezer, model #ZFSB25DTG SS, and began having problems almost immediately. It kept food 7 degrees warmer than the read-out, with no way to make it colder. The ice maker didn't work. It's incredibly noisy. The freezer compartment expanded and the shelves no longer fit. After 23 phone calls, 5 service calls (only 2 of which anyone showed up for), countless hours out of work, countless dollars spent on spoiled food, and a virtually useless freezer--without shelves, and 4-1/2 months, it still doesn't work, I have no shelves in the freezer, and GE's service department says, [they're] sorry, but they can't help me. They have essentially told me my warranty is worthless, and they won't repair or replace the unit.

I paid 3500 for this unit, and it hasn't worked, almost from day one. I keep most of my food in a Whirlpool model that I've owned for 15 years in my garage. I can't afford to keep food in it, since it won't keep temperature, and everything spoils within a day or two. There is also the problem of the non-existent shelves in the freezer, rending it useless. I have spent countless hours out of work, waiting for repairmen who don't show up at all. I have also lost valuable time from work, making the last 23 phone calls, sitting on hold, and being spoken to as if I am bothering them.

Purchased GE Refrigerator Model GTS22KBPWWW in August, 2007. Noticed ice forming in the freezer. Had 4 service calls by local retailer in fall of 2007, left for the winter. Next June problem reappeared, servie replaced the Evaporation Motor, and, after problem continued, they consulted with GE Technical Assistance and replace the Air Tower.

Problem again reappeared. Called GE Customer Relations, they sent out a technician who declared that everything that could be done, had been done and that the refrigerator was operatingas designed. Pointed out ice on food in the freezer, he agreed that wasn't good, said it must be because it was wet when placed in freezer (meat?wet?)and told us to call customer relations. They said the freezer had been declared operating as designed and there was nothing further they could do.

I paid 1127 for a refrigerator that is defective in design and I am going to have to replace it next spring when I again return.

Sean of Ewa Beach, HI September 3, 2008

Sean of Ewa Beach HI (09/03/08)
I have a GE contracts for all of GE appliances that came with my home. I recently had my freezer icing up and my fridge getting warm (2nd time in 2 years). I place a call to GE and they say a repairman will contact me within 24 hours. I get a call the next day in the afternoon stating that the repairman was a few minutes from my house. So he arrives and begins working, 10 minutes later a 2nd repairman FROM A DIFFERENT company (GE USES BOTH FOR LOCAL SERVICE AGENTS) shows up and BOTH have the same incident report from GE and then begin to get into an arguement in my house about who should perform the service. I proceed to tell the 2nd guy that came sorry and he needed to go.

The main logic board on my fridge was replaced. I called in to file a food loss claim, since i had just spent over 400 at costco and i lost everything in my fridge/freezer. The agent asked how much loss i told her about 300 worth and she told me ok a check will be there in 2-3 weeks. In the meanwhile my freezer FREEZES over again with in 4 days after i had just gone to replace the food I had lost.

So I make a another call to ge appliance and they say someone will be calling me from the repair shop 2 days later, my food has gone bad again, my freezer was 70 degrees inside. The repairman shows up and replaces another part. I call ge to claim more food loss since they didnt fix it properly the first time and they told me 1 have only 1 claim per life of the contract. BEWARE OF THIS, the repairman are contractors and are not motivated to properly fix the issue, coming back 2X is more for them. But I am out of luck on recouping any of my second round of food loss.

So I wait 3 weeks and no check nothing. I call GE at the 3 week mark and i am told that I can only claim 100 total ever. I asked what happened to my prior claim and why I was NEVER contacted once (even tho they have my address and phone number) to fix the issue, the agent proceeded to tell me they didnt know. I asked to speak to a manager and he said he wa a manager, (i have been told this 2X by different agents at GE apparently they are told to claim they are all managers) I asked him to process my claim for 100 and he told me i would have my check is 5-7 days.

I asked to speak to who ever his boss is, I was given a nice 15 minute dose of hold therapy by them and then a lady came on the phone. She said that she saw the other lady had taken my claim but didnt know why she did that or what happened to it I asked her how long my reduced claim would take to get here and she told me 7-10 days.... DO NOT BELIEVE ANYTHING GE AGENTS TELL YOU ON THE PHONE. THEY SAY ANYTHING AND YOU CAN HAVE ZERO ASSURANCE THAT ANYTHING WILL EVER BE RESOLVED. I still have not recieved a DIME in food loss costs. I WILL NEVER EVER BUY A GE APPLIANCE/LIGHT BULB/ WATCH NBC (owned by GE) EVER AGAIN.

600+ dollars in food loss over the span of 2 weeks due to faulty repairs the first time. HAVE RECIEVED ZERO from GE for food loss

I had purchased a new house with all new GE appliances in the kitchen. The frig M/N GSH25JFTA-BB has been freezing over a number of times. The defrost circuit on the motherboard has failed. I have read the history on these boards and the only obviuos way to repair this is by re-wiring the entire defrost circuit with an external timer. The boards cost approx. 105 every 18 months. The timer cost 25 and as long as you understand basic refrigeration circuits any one can wire one in. The boards do have a recall but to this day I have not found the number to receive the new board for free.

The ending cost was about 30 to perminently repair the issue. A GE Tech charges 70 per visit. By the 2nd visit he will have the part and will fix the problem, so even if you get the board for free you have to spend 140 in labor. No one wins that does even account for the cost in food you also lose. GE is just junk, I would not reccomend to purchase their products.
