GE Ice Dispensers Serve Up More Than Ice

Quite a few things can go wrong with GE refrigerators and, as the complaints in this section show, getting problems fixed is anything but easy.

A few recent complaints ...

Debbie of Newbury Park, CA August 28, 2009

when we purchased our fridge, we bought the extended warranty. Since 8-30-08, we have had 9 service visits for the same problem. Everything has been replaced from the fan to the mother board. The vent in the fridge freezes and therefore the sensor senses that the fridge is too cold. From there, the fridge runs constantly trying to warm the fridge, and thus spoils the entire contents of the fridge.

Our contract states that the repairman can deem the appliance unrepairable and we are to be compensated or the fridge replaces. Each repairman ends up arguing with the company and they make him replace a part. We are now replacing things for a second time. I feel they are in breach of the contract, and that we have a lemon of a fridge.

I had a home built in 2004 with all GE profile appliances. Double ovens (trivection & convection) that stopped working due to the electronic controls. The refrigerator the ice & water stopped working for the same reason, The dishwasher has done this 4 time & has had to have the electronic chip replaced each time. Infact all 3 are down now & waiting for service. I use my appliances so seldom since I live alone & work all day & seldom cook. I am just fed up with this. What can be done about this issue.

We have a Profile side by side Refrigerator Model # PSC23MGYWW we bought for 1748.00 on 6/2/2006 and on 7/27/07 Friday evening. Ice Maker was not working and water was not coming into the ice maker. Also the frig was down and hot inside we lost 166.00 worth of food in frig and freezer GE covered only 100.00 worth. Repairman shows up on 8/7/07 and replaces a Board Assembly at the rear of frig, and an interface board inside of the front of the frig. Total 236.61 + labor covered under warranty. We were so nervous about this new frig we took out an extended warranty to 2011. On Aug 22, 2009 we opened up our frig in the AM and every thing in frig was spoiled 2nd time. The temp dial said it was 88 degrees inside. I took pictures of this dial & food loss to show the temp. Repair man comes August 24 to repair. He replaces the same board assembly again and light switch in the door. This time Parts 204.80 labor 210.93 total 415.73 thank God we took out an extended warranty. I would not recommend the GE Profile to anyone. Know I have to see what they will give me for my food loss.

Barb of Greer, SC August 25, 2009

I bought my GE Profile in July 2006. It stopped cooling the frig. part recently and when the repairman came out , he said it was the master board and replaced it so the fan now works. After he left, I noticed that the ounce dispenser no longer registered the ounces if you used the water dispenser. Although the temperature went down to the 30's as evidenced by 2 thermometers in the refrigerator part, the degrees on the top panel did not. Another repairman came out a few days later and when I pointed out that the problems still there before he left, he fluffed me off as if I were a complete idiot. Now I have been blackballed and am wasting my time waiting for a repairman who came out later and ordered some parts since the 2nd guy refuses to come out and he does my district. This mess has been going on for over 2 weeks. In the meantime my husband and son who are both engineers have studied up on the workings of these refrigerators and it is pretty clear that they are sending out people who do not have any clue as to how to fix them. Finally after calling and calling another person is supposed to come out on Thursday pm. By the way in the course of these repair attempts we found out our water dispenser never worked right from the very start.

Gala of Bettendorf, IA August 25, 2009

I purchased a GE Profile Refrigerator in Feb. 2008. Since that time it has been repaired 4 times. The first problem (6 mos. after purchase) was with the connector to the water line. (It took 2 weeks for repair.) My kitchen was flooded. GE was called directly, as listed in the manual. GE repairman at first tried to deny that there was a defective part and claimed it was the filter. My insurance claims adjuster sent the part to an independent lab and it was found defective.

The insurance company subrogated against GE. My co. then had to have the part sent to GE's lab. The second problem occured on December 23, 2008 and it took 31 days for the repair to be completed. All of the food was spoiled and it was really fun not having a refrigerator when I had out of town guests for the holidays. The repair was rescheduled several times for various reasons (none initiated by me) and the repairman who finally did the work was obnoxious and unreliable. I finally was able to find that the repairman did not order the parts from the main supplier and I ended up having several stressful conversations with GE and they sent me the parts. No one ever figured out why the repairman never received the parts.

After letters and phone conversations with Consumer Relations, the last person I spoke with led me to believe that my warranty was being extended for another year. I had to fax all of my purchase information. The third problem occured in July, 2009.

This time I contacted Sears directly. I was informed that my warranty for certain parts had expired and I was offered the opportunity to purchase a repair warranty. I did so. There was a problem with the fan again. Parts had to be ordered, but the repair was completed in a reasonable amount of time. I talked to a respresentative at the store where I purchased the refrigerator and was told that it was too bad I hadn't called Sears the first time I had a problem.

Somehow there is no connections between GE repair and repair done by Sears. I was led to believe that I may have gotten a new appliance if I had first contacted Sears. Today, August 25, I have spoiled food again! There is ice build - up inside the drawers, just as before, so I suspect it is the fan again!

Also, the flap on the ice dispenser does not close right a way so sometimes that causes ice to remain in the chute and then melt. Sears repair will come tomorrow. Unfortunately, I have new GE microwave, double-oven stove, and dishwasher. GE doesn't care that I am a good customer.

I will never buy another GE appliance, nor will any of my friends! flooded floor, necessitated hiring commercial clean-up, and floor replacement. Replace all food in refrigerator 4 times. In the 18 mos. that I have had refrigerator, it has been out of service for approximately 56 days!

I bought a GE Refrigerator Model #GSH22JSTSS on 5/25/07 for 1,383.04, which included an extended 4 year warranty. We got sick this past week and the kids told us the milk smelled funny. We realized that our refrigerator is only cooling to 60 degrees and the food was thawing out in the freezer. We called the number on the extended warranty and everyone kept passing the buck. Then, we called the store itself. Even Andy who is supposed to be the best in Customer Care there basically blew me off.

GE scheduled us for repair on 8/26. Then, Reuben set us up for 8/24. We had emails for the 26th repair and then a cancellation for the 26th because they set us up for the 24th. Today, Home Depot Corporate informed me that GE did not have us scheduled for the 24th according to GE. When my husband called Reuben back, they said no Reuben worked there and after several calls back, they came clean and informed him that they overbooked for Monday the 24th.

I purchased a new GE Profile Refrigerator in 09/06. In 02/09, it was not cooling properly and I contacted GE service. When they came out it was the fan and because it is controlled by the main control board, it was necessary to replace that board. Part cost was 110.00, labor 160.15. This was not covered under any warranty. In July a coworker had the same problem with their GE Profile. After the repair, he called the GE Service Center and they offered to reimburse him the cost of the part. I called and asked about reimbursement on mine. One service representative told me my model was not on the "list".

Apparently, GE is aware of this problem with refrigerators manufactured at a certain plant. I again called and spoke with another representative inquiring about how they can only select certain models when it is apparent this is a problem across all of the GE Profiles. She said, "we had to draw the line somewhere". I feel discriminated against and think GE should be replacing the cost of this main control board on ANY refrigerator that has the problem within a certain time frame. Since this started, I now know of 4 people who had this issue. I think GE should be investigated as to the magnitude of this problem and required to reimburse all owners who encountered this problem within 5 years of their purchase. They also do not tell you about the refund program -you only find out by complaining. Please contact me if you need additional information.

Bill of Hendersonville, NC August 21, 2009

GE Profile bottom freezer French door 20 cubic feet Refrigerator. To the month two years old when the freezer began to have varying temperature. It never got above 32degrees but got pretty close to it and sometimes went below zero - just all over the place. Finally called for service and the control board was replaced but the machine still did not work.Days later it was determined that the compressor and evaporator needed to be replaced and parts were ordered.

A week later the compressor arrived but no evaporator. Another week and the evaporator arrived and the parts were installed. Still the refrigerator would not work. Three days later GE did agree to replace the refrigerator. We have liked this refrigerator very much and were most disappointed when it failed. The service was good even though the problem was not fixed. Our only complaint was the evaporator not being in stock when ordered.

And we were very disappointed that this unit failed after two years when we have a GE in the basement that is at least 30 years old and working perfectly. We think GE did all they could to resolve our problem. They offered to pay for a rental refrigerator or purchase a small apartment refrigerator to get us by while the problem was being fixed. And after all service failed they replaced the refrigerator. We were not happy that we were out of our refrigerator for about three weeks but in the end we really cannot complain.

Tim of Winchester, VA August 20, 2009

We bought a new home in Jan. 2007 with all new GE appliances. The refrigerator stop cooling and producing ice about 6 months after being in the home. After trying a number of the fix it ideas on the internet I gave up.

I have been reading all the complaints and how well their repairs went . Im not sure what to do. I have no money for a new fridge. My wife and I have 5 children, house payment, etc. Is there anything we can do? We have had no ice for over year. Alot of food has gone bad because of temp flucuation.
