GE Ice Dispensers Serve Up More Than Ice

Quite a few things can go wrong with GE refrigerators and, as the complaints in this section show, getting problems fixed is anything but easy.

A few recent complaints ...

Yvonne of Temecula, CA (08/08/06)
My ice maker has never worked properly. The customer service reps are very rude and not helpful.  When told about the ice maker, their reply was, "you can purchase another one for 139."

I haven't had a ice maker all summer, and had to buy bags of ice, when I had a refrigerator only a year old.

We purchased a GE Profile side by side refrigerator Model #PSH25PSSCSV in March 2006. From the time the refrigerator was installed we have had a loud continuous knocking noise (as if somone were knocking on a door) coming from the freezer area. The noise will go on for hours at a time. Also, the ice despenser is so slow it can take up to four minutes to despense four glasses of ice. I contacted GE for a service call to repair the problem and was told by the repair man that this is the way the refrigerator works and there is nothing to be done.

The knocking noise is from the gas in the freezer area and nothing can be done about it. They are aware of the noise and thats the way it works. The design of the icemaker was to provide more storage in the freezer area for the consumer, Therefore it tilts backwards, (very poorly designed) and all the ice falls to the back of the bucket. Therefore it takes several minutes for the icemaker to work the ice forward. His fix it suggestion was to pull the ice bucket out each time I use it and shake the ice forward. His comment was he responds to these issues weekly as this is an on going problem with the refrigerator.

He also noticed a loud whining sound coming from the refrigerator area, he pulled out the drawers and found a large sheet of ice frozen to the side of the refrigerator. As he was working to remove it, he stated this is also an ongoing problem GE is working on and once it has been resolved we will be notified and someone will come out to fix it.

We've had NOTHING but problems with our very pricey GE Monogram bottom-freezer refrigerator. The first one delivered to our home about a year ago was clearly faulty and was replaced quickly. The second one kept the freezer temperature at somewhere between -27 degrees and 6 degrees (it should be at 0). It gurgled constantly. Technicians came and went and sometimes never came. Each time, I rearranged my schedule and waited for them from 8:00 to 1:00, from 1:00 to 5:00, and sometimes from 8:00 until 5:00. It could take up to a week to schedule service.

Everyone had an answer: needs a new computer (so they ordered one, I waited for it, they installed it), needs a new gasket (ordered, waited, didn't install because the technician who was to install it knew that wasn't the problem), you're not closing the door firmly! Ugh! It's a lemon! Suddenly, a week and a half ago, the refrigerator portion stopped working and everything inside went bad. It would take three days, five days to get somebody to come. A technician arrived and... couldn't fix it, of course. FINALLY, they agreed to replace it. My family of four had been without refrigeration for a week. The delivery men are scheduled. I wait all morning, take everything out of the freezer when they arrive, work with the guys to maneuver the huge refrigerator out of the house and to get the new one in.

GUESS WHAT? THIS FRIDGE DOESNT WORK AT ALL!! And what's worse? They aren't offering to replace it! They want to patch it together! So, I'll be on the phones again, talking with with customer representatives, supervisors, customer relations people. I'll wait for a date to be set, wait around for a delivery (i hope) or yet another technician. It's been a week and a half now with no refrigeration and now no freezer either. The customer relations folks are politely, calmly awful. Every time I dial 1-800-GECARES for service (which has been regularly and often over the past year), I laugh to myself. GE DOES NOT CARE! (So glad we went with a Viking range instead of the GE Monogram!!)

My GE refrigerator breaks often.  The ice maker parts have broken off into the ice and the ice dispensing motor freezes every other day.  The unit is only 5 years old and I have to change the defrost element every year.

I have purchased a 3 refrigirators in the past 2-3 yrs from Home Depot, same brand, same model.. Last one the is not even 1 year old started to make a really loud, long sound that is disrupting our dinner time. I contact GE, got a tech out to my home, he looked at me and said: Put some carpet under the fredge to quite down but this is normal and there is nothing I can do for you! I called again to customer service and Tiffany answered that because a tech came out already their services is done.

Some refrigirators make noise some don't. I understand that some refrigirators are broken and some are not. and GE should fix this noise so we could have our dinners uninterupted.
