Michael of Clay, NY January 4, 2006

Michael of Clay NY (01/04/06)
The other day, I went to my local Home Depot store to purchase a new washer and dryer. The deal was all made, and as we sat down to finalize plans for delivery, the salesperson told me that I had to purchase a section of flexible exhaust hose. I told him that I have permanently installed rigid ducting in my home, and that I spent nearly 500 having it installed just last year.

He told me that the installers wouldn't use it: that it is their policy not to connect to existing ductwork. I told him that I was sure he was mistaken, that the policy must mean not reusing existing flexible ducting, but he assured me that he was correct. The only way that the installers would hook up the dryer is if I remove or bypass the rigid ducting, and use flexible hose to connect the dryer to the outside. I spoke to the manager, and he confirmed that this is indeed the policy.

I contacted Home Depot's "Consumer Care" department, and after they called the store themselves, they told me that there is nothing they can do. I installed the rigid ducting because I was told that flexible ducting is a fire hazzard. The run from the back of the dryer to the outdoors is about 15 feet. While this distance can legally be covered with rigid ducting, local building code allows for only 8 feet of flexible duct. I would either have to move the plumbing and electrical connections for the washer and dryer, or move the outside vent to a location within my garage.

I explained all of this to Home Depot, and they were very clear with me that they would rather lose my business than violate their policies. Incidentally, the Lowe's store just down the street has no such policy.

They sold me a LG refrigerator with a Gift Card offer, but when it came to providing the gift card they said that the offer was no good. I followed their rules but am out 150.00.

Susan of Rindge, NH December 9, 2005

Susan of Rindge NH (12/09/05)
We ordered all of our appliances; refrigerator, stove, washer, dryer, dish washer from Home Depot in December. We had scheduled our delivery to be on 12/8/05. The delivery people called us the day before. I spoke to them and told them that I was 20 minutes from work. They said that was fine, we would get a call 1/2 hour before the delivery.

They called my husband on 12/8/05 at 3:57 and indicated that they were 15 mins away. He indicated that I needed 20 minutes to get home, and gave them my cell phone number. I left my work at 4:00 pm. I arrived home at 4:20. I never received a call or did they leave any type of record stating they came.

I called the Home Depot Direct about 3 times and they indicated that they would be there. My last call they told me that they put a message into their dispatch. HDD indicated they would call me back either way. We never received a call.

We now have no appliances, we gave our other ones away in preparation for the delivery. We are a family of 5. They told us that it was our fault. The driver said he waited 20 minutes for me. That is impossible. If he called my husband at 3:57 and said he was 15 minutes away, he would of arrived at my home by 4:15. I arrived at 4:20- We never got a call, and what happend to the 1/2 hour window?

I have never been treated so badly before from a store. These appliances were what we wanted. Now have to wait until next week.

I now have to do laundry at a laundramat. I have to leave work again. I will not stop here. Though it is not GE's fault, they are the ones that set up the delivery and it gives GE a horrible name as well as Home Depot.
