Unbeknownst to me, I entered into a 36-month contract for home security monitoring service at my current residence, an apartment. The company who sold me the equipment and service, Spectrum Security Systems, went out of business and sold their monitoring debt to a company called King Central. It appears that King Central's only concern is getting paid for a contract that, logic would dictate, I would have not entered into under my present domicile.

I was also told by Spectrum Security that they would provide one free move, install the equipment at another location at no charge. When I asked King Central about this their response was one of little concern. I am about to move into a new home and would like to either cancel this contract, that again I did not know I was signing, or have them provide me with the relocation of this system. The cancellation of the contract would allow me to do some competitive pricing on the monitoring service and would also allow me to have service to the equipment, which presently I do not have.

Well, Will may not have known he was signing a contract but he apparently did so. What he needs to do now is read it. Chances are it contains a "successors and assigns" clause that allows Spectrum to assign the contract to anyone it chooses. Next question is what Will's cancellation rights are, what service the company is obligated to provide, etc., etc. It's shooting in the dark to even discuss this until Will reads the contract he didn't know he was signing.
