Maytag Refrigerators |

Jeanne of Barre, VT December 1, 2009 We purchased Maytag refrigerator in 02/2002. Within months it was noisy and not cooling properly. It quit in July 2003 and we had a 13 day wait for part (no refrigeration during that time). The evaporator fan motor had to be replaced but I had to pay for service call and labor to install it (69.95 srv call and 35.00 labor) Within months it was noisy and very hot air coming from the bottom of frig. This time the compressor was overheating and had to be replaced. Tato's appliance contacted Maytag for me as they weren't going to pay since I didn't have an extened warranty. The cost of the compressor was covered by Maytag. At this point, the refrigerator had turned a strip of my floor brown from the overheating and it was still having issues with ice build up on the copper tube in the back. I wrote and asked them to replace the refrigerator (I have a copy of the letter)as it never operated well for any length of time. Maytag insisted they could do no more since I had no extended warranty. Of late, I received a letter informing me of a recall on this model because of an issue with the relay switch causing overheating. The appliance has never functioned well. The back (made of cardboard and insulation) was destroyed from the moisture coming from the constant ice that surrounds the copper tube just behind it and the fan never shuts off. My energy monitor shows the large increase in electrical usage when I shut the frig off and turn it back on. The representative I spoke to said to schedule the repair with Tatro's of Barre, VT. The technician came without contacting me despite my instructions to call so I could be there to talk to him about the problems. He did the recall work but when I contacted him said he'd have to reschedule a service call and wouldn't be able to tell me what the problem was without getting into the sealed cooling system (at my expense) If I had the resources, I would have replaced it before this. I have contacted Maytag and they are standing firm that they have no obligation except to document my complaints as I have no extended warranty. Julie of Kingsburg, CA December 1, 2009 I purchased a Maytag side by side, stainless steel finish refrigerator, (model number; msp2651kes, serial number;50049285lc), from Home Depot in 2007. Not more than one week after taking delivery on the refrigerator it started to malfunction. The freezer compartment was not staying cold and the refrigeration compartment was loosing its cooling power also. I lost an entire refrigerator and freezer's worth of food this time. I contacted the company and they sent out a local technician to repair the unit, as it was still under warranty. Then, not even a year later the same problem occured, and they sent out another technician from the same company to do the same repairs with the same parts, still under warranty. The technician commented that it would be useless to keep repairing the same problem over and over again, "you need a new refrigerator". Again, not more than a year later, the same problem, and again the same repair company, only this time the technician said that he would personally make note of the repair to the Maytag Company, as to encourage them to honor their warranty policy and send a new refrigerator. I spoke to another service representative and was informed that Maytag would replace the refrigerator aaccording to warranty if the same problem persisted past three service call and repairs for said problem. Well here I am now, two and a half years after the purchase, with a refrigerator convienantly out of warranty, that is still suffering from the same malfunction. Loss of three refrigerators full of grocery products, and numerous service repair fees. Allison of Conroe, TX November 30, 2009 We bought our French door refrigerator from Maytag about 2 1/2 years ago. Since then we have had it break down on us 3 times. Each time they agree to fix the issues after we complain enough but we had to buy an extended warranty and each time the unit goes out they refuse to replace all of the food that we lose even though a technician takes days to come out. It's absurd and when I called the Maytag store I didn't even have to tell him the model number of the unit because they already knew. The problem is widespread and I am very surprised that Maytag hasn't recalled this unit or there hasn't been some sort of class action lawsuit filed against them. We lost 3 refrigerators worth of food. Probably about 1,000.00 or more Michael of Chicago, IL November 27, 2009 We have had excellent past experience of Maytag--our washing machine has worked flawlessly for 25 years. We bought a French door, bottom freezer Maytag fridge in April 2007, and recently the upper compartment stopped cooling. I could restore it for a week or two by manually defreezing the freezer compartment with a fan. I summoned the seller's highly efficient repair service. Result? Heater and relay in defreeze system working, so control board faulty. Cost for new board and repair visit: 265. Warranty for part? 90 days. There's no excuse for this. Reputable electronics manufacturers use rigorously tested quality parts. Sony or LG or any other major TV manufacturer would go out of business if this happened. Maytag's record is already appalling and unless they refund my unforeseen outlay I will never buy anything made by them or their affiliates again. Larry of Placerville, CA November 24, 2009 After my Maytag caught on fire, and Maytag agreed to repair it at no cost, the repair man ordered all new parts. Ten days later they installed all new parts only to have it explode again! Maytag has no interest in learning why their product caught fire! They can not fix it! They want me to buy another Maytag and apply for a "rebate". FAT CHANCE I WILL EVER BUY A PRODUCT FROM MAYTAG/WHIRLPOOL again! The product is defective! They can not repair it! And now they want me to buy another product from them? If I was not here when the product exploded and started the melt down, my house would have caught fire! The circuit breaker did not trip! There were no fuse or safety designed into this product. I contacted Maytag so that they could learn from this mistake. They verified the fire and then left me with the old parts. They ordered all new parts at N/C and then after they shorted out and failed, they left me with those parts too! They have a dangerous product that they can not repair and they do not care! They simply want me to buy another! billy of hoyt, KS November 23, 2009 compressor failed on a 3 1/2 year old refrigerator, then the warranty is expired. Thought that MAYTAG was a littli better than that. Robert of Arlington Hts., IL November 19, 2009 Purchased a Maytag top/bottom refrigerator in December 2002 and experienced a compressor failure in November 2009. Refrigerator cost over 1,300 seven years ago. Called Maytag authorized repair service and was told that compressors were backordered and they wouldn't have any for a week. Was also told that compressor failure is a common problem because the supplier, Tecumseh, makes a shoddy product. Hardly a reassuring thing to hear from a the Maytag Repair Man. Finally called a local service company who fixed the refrigerator for 737. Goodbye forever - Maytag. sheri of littleton, CO November 17, 2009 Maytag sent us letter to have part replaced for recall for refrigerator, company came out to fix (which Maytag referred).Long story short came home after work and hardwood was full of water and all our food in the fridge and freezer was runined. Called appliance repair store and they said there is nothing they can do, called Maytag and they will only give us 250.00 for our food. Made me feel like I was lying said they have never heard of this problem. (glad I found this sight) Which we all know is not true I will never buy another Maytag appliance EVER!!! We are going to go after them to repair our hardwood and I suggest you all do not let them off, they know this problem exsist and our doing nothing about it. They are knowingly lying to the public about this problem. Maybe we should all go to our local media and see what they can do to get this out to people so Maytag will be held responsible. To top it off they said its going to take 4 to 6 weeks to get check, if we even recieve the check. What is a family who is struggling in these tough times suppose to do when they have lost a frige and a freezer full of food. Shame on Maytag!!!! I will make sure everyone in Littleton Colorado knows not to buy Maytag!!!! Belinda of Buford, GA November 12, 2009 My husband and I purchased a Maytag Washer, Dryer and Refrigerator in 2003. From the time we purchased the Refrigerator, the ice maker spends more than 2 minutes to spit out the ices and when it does the ice goes in the floor after the container is released from the buttom not while the button is being pressed. The washer does not spin dry the clothes and it takes sometimes as many as 3 full spins to get the closes where they can be put in the dryer. The dryer tub does not turn fast enought to get the closed to spread out to dry and the tub currently does not turn at all. I have had to call the repair service to come out to repair the tub. Also when I try to dry sheets, the tub turns them into one big roll and the sheet cannot be dried by the dryer. I have to take them out of the dryer and hang them up to dry on a rack. This is the worst refrigerator, washer and dryer that I have ever purchased. The repair service makes excuses for the appliances I feel because they know they are unfixable. Ken of Maplewood, MN November 8, 2009 I have a Maytag MFD2560HEQ model refrigerator purchased in July 2005, 4 years and 3 months ago. Recently it began buzzing and not cooling. It would buzz loudly for twelve seconds and then click off. A few minutes later it would do the same and the temperature in the refrigerator and freezer would slowly elevate over time. After reading on the subject I discovered that this is a classic symptom of either a bad compressor or starter relay. I have an extended warranty on this refrigerator, because I picked up when purchasing it that most appliances (because of our governments pressure to be more energy efficient...and we haven't seen anything yet) particularly ones with compressors were building them too small and they were junk and prone to break-down. I was glad to have the extended warranty, which will run out in July 2010. I called the warranty company and they sent out (after a weekend) a tech who tried a couple of new relays on the unit and determined that it was the compressor. Yet he said his equipment necessary for changing the compressor was out of commission and that I should contact another tech covered by my warranty so they could get to the repair in a more timely manner. I did and they scheduled an appointment four days later (without a refrigerator for a week by that time). The new tech showed up when he said he would and proceeded to replace the bad compressor. I'm told that Maytag had a warranty on the compressor for five years so it will be covered, but the extended warranty will have to pay for the labor (about 2 hours worth plus). I don't usually by extended warranties. Am I glad I did this time!!! We now have a new compressor in the fridge and it seems to be working well. We have had no other significant problems with this fridge (yet), BUT having a compressor last only 4+ years on a 1400 refrigerator is ridiculous. I'd like to know how much energy is saved with such shoddy and light-weight engineering. People, beware of governmental regulations that on the surface seem to be energy efficient and yet in the long run cost you far, far more. We've got a Wards freezer we bought in the 1970's and has been sitting in the heat and cold of a garage for 30+ years and hauled to four states and STILL works! We may save a few kilowatts of energy with the newer more energy efficient models but we're going to fill up the blasted landfills with appliances and empty our wallets. THANKS environmental extremists! The tech said that the compressors on this model (the original) are "notorious" for breaking down. He put in an alternate model which he said seems to be engineered better and had a much better track record. I hope it does Report Your Experience
