Melissa of Fresno, CA September 24, 2008

I had a pyrex 9x9 (or 8x8) pan. I was cooking a pork loin roast in the oven. When I took the roast out of the oven to cool I placed in on the top of the stove and it shattered. I don't remember the temperature it was cooked at, however I am sure that it was somewhere around 350 degrees. It was placed on a warm stove top, as the oven was on cooking the said dish.

I was shocked, we figured that it was a fluke and that somehow we had stressed the pyrex dish. After reading this article I am appalled and disturbed that this is happening. I will immediately be removing ALL pyrex and pyrex type dishes from my house and be telling all my family about this. The dish shattered completely!

I had a Pyrex baking dish (bowl and glass lid). When I was putting away dishes one day, the lid shattered. It had bumped against another dish, but not so hard that I expected it to be broken (I've dropped glass jars of mayonnaise, etc, worse than that, and not had them break). But it didn't just chip or break, it SHATTERED. Pieces of glass went flying everywhere. It took forever to clean it up.

At the time, I didn't blame the product, I blamed the accident, but upon reading the Pyrex article here, I have to wonder. It didn't break into chunks and it was barely bumped. And no heat nor temperature changes were involved... maybe it was warm from the dishwasher? To shatter into shards like that, it was very strange.

Two years ago, I was cooking a casserole in a blue Pyrex baking dish in a 350 degree oven. 10 minutes in there was a pop and when I opened the oven, there was glass and food everywhere. The ingredients were not cold so there was no drastic temperature change.

No physical damage. Lots of cleaning and the loss of the pan. Using metal from now on.

Gunther of New York, NY September 24, 2008

Gunther of New York NY (09/24/08)
Pyrex dish EXPLODED in broiler. The dish itself was NOT taken from the fridge or freezer. It was room temperature.

Explosion was loud and sent MILLIONS of glass pieces of all shapes and sizes, including very, very dangerous razor sharp slivers strewn throughout the bottom half of the stove around, above, and below the broiler itself. It took me a week to find and dispose of all the glass shards and tiny chunks of glass strewn inside and OUTSIDE the stove, including glass that somehow blew out onto the kitchen floor! If I had been checking the dish and had opened the broiler door when this explosion occurred I could have easily been BLINDED!!!! I will NEVER EVER EVER use PYREX under heat again!!!!!!! Never.

I have never seen glass shatter to this extent in my over 50 years of cooking, or glass explode like this ANYWHERE. Scary, scary, dangerous stuff!!!!!!!

My stepdad's daughter was cleaning a Pyrex dish in the sink when it exploded. I don't know the exact preconditions of the accident. But the narrative is haunting, I treat my Pyrex like a loaded gun now.

Her job was also a translator for the deaf. She will never perform Sign Language again. I am not making any of this up, this has to be one the most bizarre and tragic things that could ever happen. I will contact them for more details if it will help more people.

A large shard severed her Hand at the wrist. It cut her hand completely off. Her husband's quick action saved her life. I heard they were going to reattach the hand, but whether she'll be able to use it again is unknown.
