Consumer Complaints about Scotts

Kathy of Houston, TX August 19, 2008

Kathy of Houston TX (08/19/08)
I received advertise about Scott Lawn Service by mail. I want my yards look nice so I want to let Scott Lawn Service take care my yard. The first service I had was on 4/7/08. I paid them at 4/29/08. I called them again for another service. I told them call me in advance before they do second service. On 5/10/08, Lawn Service technician came to my house to do the second service without letting me know.

I called to cancel Scott Lawn service on the same day because it is unreasonable to me to fertilize every month. The service cost me 52.61/application. My front yard and back yard are small. It is about 3500 sqf.

After 2 times services: the condition of my yard doesn't improve. Crabgrass, grassy weeds are still all over my yard. Spiders, snail, slugs, roaches, and ants are still run around the yard. The spiders and roaches even get into my house. The bad grasses and crabgrass were fertilized every month so that they were growing very fast and make my yard look very ugly after 9th day. The Home Owner Association even sent me notice to mow the lawn within 15 days. It was a headache to me.

Scott Lawn Service customer service left many voice mails at my home phone for the unpaid service on May 10, 2008. I contacted them to complain about second service without letting me know, how they did not do good job as they advertise, and the bad condition of my yard after second service. I was unable to reach Houston Southeast Scott Lawn Service Manager. Every time I called Scott Lawn customer service during their business hours to request them let me talk to the manager, customer service person always said the manager already went home. I did not go to work July 23 and 24 because I was sick. On July 23, I requested customer service contact manager for me and call me AT HOME. The manager called me at work and left voice mail at my work phone.

On July 24, I called customer service again about this problem, and told them that the manager did not call me back. She said it is not true, her manager called me. They made me feel like I am a liar. August 13, 2008, Collection Agency sent me the bill to collect 52.61 and 7.50 late fee. If the Scott Lawn Service denied that I ignore their phone calls about the unpaid service, I will print out my cellular bill to prove to them that I contacted them during their business hours.

I called Scott Lawn Service about the bad condition of my yard, and the money they asked me to pay for the service, they did not come back to take care the problem for my yard as they stated in their website. My next door neighbor only spent less than 50 to buy fertilizers/weed control/fire ant control at Home Depot. His yard looks nicer than mine.

Having worked within the Scott's system, I can honestly tell anyone who is considering this service RUN The 'technicians' are not trained well and do not know much about how to take care of a yard. You would be better off to read a book on lawn care and doing it yourself. They are paid by how much 'production' they do in a day. Production being the number of they can bill, so a quality job takes a back seat to getting as many yards 'treated' as possible.

We used Scotts Lawn service in all 07 and part of 08. Scotts Lawn Service simply did not do what they were being paid to do. (eliminate weeks and control insects) Their Satisfaction Guarantee states: You take no risk with Scotts LawnService. We want you to be fully satisfied with every visit. If not, simply let us know and we'll immediately make things right. We're never satisfied until you are.

We did contact them on different occasions by phone to report specific issues that we were not happy about. (weeds not dying following the treatments, poor quality of grass, etc.) My lawn got chinch bugs.I called my local office and told them few times about this problem and that I was very worry. They came and kill few of my fruit trees. sad. But the weeds are great.

I told them (to please) that some body called me before the service because my gate was close. They theach came and push my gate and BROKE my gate. I told them about that problem few times. They never did a thing about my gate or my trees. After I told them that, they call me before they came to do service.

I wrote 2 letters to Mr. H and after the fist one , a manager call me and left a message. When I try to call him back...he was out and he never return my calls. I send the final letter to Mr. H and told him that his people here never did a thing for my lawn. And please fix my problem and do the right thing. I only want a nice lawn. I pay for that and they promess me that. The last call I recieved was for one man that ask me about my problem. And when I explain all... he told me ok. I write here poor service and he hung up. No more news from them. Beware of Scotts Lawn Service!!!

I lost a lot of money and my lawn looks so bad. We maybe need to resod our lawn...My mother went out one day and some bugs on the lawn bite her... is sad. We pay so much money for nothing... Help!!! My mother pay for all these services and she is retired, and on a fixed income/budget, these suprise added costs are very hard to take care of. We do feel that we were scammed, and that is how they make added profits.

Stephanie of Denville, NJ July 8, 2008

Stephanie of Denville NJ (07/08/08)
Per my telephone conversation today with Mr. Johnson, I have enclosed a check for 36.10 as payment in full on my account. The first week of March we received a call indicating that our first treatment was scheduled; we contacted Scotts to cancel service. Scotts ignored our request and provided a treatment on March 29, 2008. Responding to a past due notice dated 6/26/08, I spoke to Mr. Johnson on July 1 and disputed the fact we were being charged for a service that we previously cancelled. He suggested that we settle our account by sending in a payment for half of the amount due, 36.10.

I requested that he talk to his manager explaining that we were being charged for a service that was previously cancelled and our account should be adjusted to reflect a zero balance. I also explained to Mr. Johnson that we had acquired their service in 2007 to deal with the problems we had with crabgrass. At the end of the 2007 season we were satisfied with the results of our back yard, however, we still had the crabgrass problem in the front lawn.

So after receiving the recommended treatments in 2007, Scotts never got rid of the crabgrass in the front lawn. That was a major factor in our decision to not continue service in 2008. The fact is that Scotts provided their first treatment 3/29/08 and the crabgrass was so prevalent that we had to buy products to kill the crabgrass and re-seed a very large area of our front lawn.

July 7, 2008 I received a collection agency notice dated July 1, 2008. I immediately contacted Mr. Johnson for an explanation. He told me that he had processed my request to dispute the amount on our account; however, it would take time to resolve. I told him that my credit is now being affected and I want to resolve this immediately. He told me that it would not affect our credit as it would take 60 to 90 days from this point for our credit to be affected. I do not believe this statement because Scotts involved a collection agency. To resolve this matter immediately, I took his offer from our conversation on 7/1/08 and told him that I would send in a payment for 36.10 in settlement of our account.

We do not owe Scotts anything since we cancelled our service in March prior to treatment; and because the results Scotts committed to were not realized. We are making this payment in order to put this matter to rest and to insure we never have to deal with Scotts Lawn Service again. Mr. Johnson agreed to this resolution that I would send in a check for 36.10 and he would adjust our account to a zero balance and also contact the collection agency to cancel any further collection attempts. He also indicated that this would not affect our credit.

Continued to invoice for service that was cancelled. When called they said they preformed the service as part of a continuation lawn service. They also dorve past property, put in a marker that said service was preformed and drove off doing nothing!
