Troy-Bilt

richard of savannah, GA May 8, 2009

I own a Troy Built edger TBE 515 It is virtually impossible to remove the edger blade carefully following the instructions. The Troy Built service department was completely useless. The unit does not edge to the advertised 2 inch depth but when measured carefully with a new blade only goes to 1 1/2 inches. I strongly advise anyone not to buy this unit. I will have to throw mine away because I am not willing to pay a service charge each time the blade must be changed.

I needed a new lawn mower 4 or 5 years ago, and since the Troy-Bilt tiller I bought in 1993 was working so well (still going with no problems), I went to Lowes to look at the Troy-Bilt lawn mowers. I do most of the repairs on my vehicles and machinery, so I was looking closely at the construction of the mower and stumbled onto the "made by MTD" tag. I knew that MTD made mass produced, throw away equipment, so I went across the street to Rural King to look at their brand. After a couple trips back and forth looking at various points on the construction, I realized that the ONLY difference was a different hood and 300 more for the Troy-Bilt name. I bought the one at Rural King and I have had to do several repairs since I bought it, but I expected that since it is made by MTD. I was very disappointed to find out that Troy-Bilt doesn't mean quality anymore.

Patricia of Martinsburg, WV April 29, 2009

I bought a Troy Built riding mower at Lowes less than 1 year ago. During the third use the belts broke and the blades got bent. I replaced the belts and blades at my expense. Yesterday I started the mower, took two turns around the yard and the engine caught on fire. Needless to say, Lowes advised that I call Troy Built and Troy Built has no number listed. Because of cheap craftsmanship, I had to buy a new mower (John Deere). The first mower cost 1,800 and on-sale the new mower cost 1,500.00. I am a recent widow and a mom who is on a very tight budget. My husband taught me how to repair some things as needed, but this is beyond my scope. I feel duped by Troy Built as I believe they intentionally sell inadequate products to those who remember that their name meant something at one time.

Bought a Troy-bilt top of the line push mower w/electric start, auto-drive and all the bells and whistles. The second time I used it the front axle fell off. Took it in for repair and it took two weeks to fix. The second time I used it after that, the axle broke off again. THird time after that was fixed, the electric start stopped working, then the handle broke in two places, the auto-drive quit working, the front axle fell off two more times...and this is all in the first 18 months of using it---5 months of which it wasn't even used because of winter. No one at TroyBilt customer service ever returns a phone call or email..not a single time. This is the worst experience I've ever had with any product. They should be reprimanded based on all the complaints that I see. Thanks.

Lost 375 and a whole lot of time and effort.

I have a Troy Bilt model d566 self propeled lawn mower that we purchased on April 20, 2004. The drive system has never functioned properly. I have had to replace the belt, which is a maintainance item but the mower just has not ever functioned properly and has been very hard to even use the mower because the pulling system just hasn't pulled the mower properly.

I just read all the coments on consmer affairs website and see that others have had the same problem. I really don't want to spend almost half the price that I paid for the mower for a new transmission that will probably break soon also. I thought that Troy-Bilt was a quality company but guess that I made a mistake.
