Lisa of churchville, NY September 30, 2009 I would like to express my disappointment with the product. We have owned this side by side refigerator for approx 5 years. Purchased from a Home Depot. We have consistantly had problems for the past 6-9 months. Trouble with the compressure, trouble with our refrigerator side not keeping up to temp and the most recent, the timer in the freezer defrosting properly. As you are aware, these items are expensive to purchase and to repeatly fix them over such a short time is very disappointing. I would not consider Whirlpool again when buying a appliance, for the simple fear of putting too much money into the product. We have put over 600.00 into repairs for a product only 5/6 years old and kept well by the consumer! Mary of Deltona , FL September 29, 2009 Just bought a Black whirlpool refrigerator model # ED5VHEXVB01 with textured finish. The Gentlemen from Lowes installed it yesterday. The frige section has yet to cool below 45 degrees F. It has been around 40 hours now. We WERE going to have Lowes switch it out for another one, but after reading all of these complaints, I think we are just going to send it back and go to Sears. MAYBE I'll just buy a used one and toss it if it breaks. Jamie of Morton, IL September 14, 2009 We remodeled our kitchen in 2007, purchasing the stainless steel Whirlpool collection including a side-by-side refrigerator/freezer, microwave/vent, electric stove/oven, and dish washer. When we got it, the handles on the appliances that were supposed to be part of a matching collection, had different colored handles. We let that slide because although they looked corny if scrutinized, they looked ok from afar. And the company did not seem to think it odd that they did not match. But when a piece of food was on the handle of the oven door, and I scratched it off with my thumb, the handle lost the color as if it had simply been painted on. Also, the handle was pure plastic. The handle for the drawer under the oven door was also plastic, and within a year had a chunk missing. The oven door also allows for any liquid from the stove top that overflows to seep into between the two panes of glass. This can not be cleaned without completely removing the door from its hinges and separating the glass panes and washing them. The microwave door handle also started losing its "paint". And lastly, and most disturbingly, the refrigerator and freezer door handles are placed in such a way that when you close one of the doors and have your thumb in the "normal" position to do so, it pinches the thumb quite nastily. This has happened to us enough times that we have figured another way to shut the door without using the handle. However, guests of our house do not have that experience and frequently come to me with their thumb in their mouth and a frown on their face. This should not be an issue. It hurts! Whirlpool has replaced the first handle with the paint issue. This is the only issue they have been able to "handle". The oven door has been checked by service repairmen a couple of times, cleaned, and put back - no changes made, just cleaned. And there is no way for them to change the refrigerator door handles without changing the structure, so after spending over 5000 in product, we are finding ourselves waiting for the day when we can afford to replace them with a different brand since Whirlpool isn't interested in fixing their problems. Jay of Lake Villa, IL August 31, 2009 I bought a Whirlpool Gold Side by Side refridgerator in 2003 I luckily woke one day earlier last month to find smoke filling up my kitchen coming from the refridgerator. Having a service person out he informed me that its the same problem happening with the Maytag recall and he seeing the same problem in Whirlpools and thar there the same company just different brand names. Sharon of Mansfield, TX August 27, 2009 I bought a new Whirlpool side by side rerigerator in March 09. The icemaker in this refrigerator never has worked right. I have had a repairman out in April, May, June, July, twice in August 09 and the repairman has put on his statement this unit is a no-fix. The problem that cannot be repaired is that this is a bad design according to the repairman and the icemaker is in the door and warm air is getting in the delivery system for the ice and the ice is melting and refreezing and jamming the icemaker up and I cannot even lift out the icemaker to empty it because it freezes up. The only way I can avoid the freezing up is to empty it daily, so when I am gone or on vacation it freezes up and is unusable. The specialist at Whirlpool admitted that they may need to replace the door with the icemaker in it but the tech line that the repairman talked with was not willing to do that. I do not think that I should have to keep a 1000 refrigerator which is obviously defective. JOHN of SAN ANTONIO, TX August 27, 2009 We purchased our Whirlpool side-by-side refrigerator/freezer 2 Nov 07. In Jul 09, the unit quit making ice, no longer got cold, and the cabinet (frame) got quite hot to the touch! My wife wanted me to call a repairman, but I did some research instead, and found out just how many consumer complaints there are against Whirlpool in general, and refrigerator/freezers in particular. I also used complaint solutions to fix the problem myself - at least temporarily! I took off the inside walls, and found the entire evaporator coils section frozen solid. Not wanting to wait days for it to thaw, I used pans of hot water to thaw it. Now it is Aug, and the ice maker is not making ice again, although as of this e-mail, no other problems currently are present. Jani of Indianola, IA August 13, 2009 Another Whirlpool refrigerator burns out. I woke up to the smell of plastic and wiring shorting out this morning. It took a while to identify where the smell was coming from. Behind the refrigerator it was smoking and sparking. My son turned off the circuit breaker and then we unplugged it. This model GD5SHAXKQ Whirlpool Gold refrigerator was purchased Jan 2001 because consumer reports rated it so highly. Guess they got it wrong on this model - IT SHOULD BE RECALLED. Luckily there was no physical damage to the house other than the awful smell of burned wire and plastic. I 'm so glad we didn't end up having a house fire and that we caught this in time. Blake of La Marque, TX August 8, 2009 Two complaints I wish to register 1)The Whirlpool Gold refrigerator I own I have had to have the ice maker repaired twice at my expense. 2) The Whirlpool water heater I purchased, I have had the thermal couple go out now for the third time in two years. I am now having the water heater replaced with a Rheems this coming Monday, also at my expense. Lowes no longer carries the defective part for replacement. Furthermore after calling a licensed plumber, my understanding is Whirlpool parts are not available in bulk to plumbers. I had always been an advocate of Whirlpool products. Rest assured this is no longer the case. I have no intention of ever making a Whirlpool purchase again. Joey of kahului, HI July 26, 2009 The coils in the freezer part of the ice box keep on freezing up every month! And that is makeing my icebox side not come cold, and spoiling all my food. If I don't take care of the problem within 2 days the freezer stops working, and all my food for my family goes. It has become costly. When the repairman comes to fix it he needs to take apart the freezer side, and defrost the coils with hot water, all that water needs to go somewhere, so it ends up on my floor, and seeping into my cabinets, it has become a mess. Called the whirlpool customer service rep, and she had said a whirlpool technician needs to come out to my house. And when he is there call whirlpool and verify my model number and the problem. The lady on the phone said "that my model number does not exist" so I told her you mean whirlpool didn't make thousands of these refrigerators everyone in my neighborhood has one If its a stainless steel. I live on a track home residential site, so every appliance in every house is the exact same. I have got to pay someone every month to come out and fix it. WHIRLPOOL SUCKS!!!!!!!!! WILL NEVER BUY AGAIN ITS WORTH IT TO SPEND A FEW MORE HUNDRED AND GET SOMETHING THAT WILL LAST 10 YEARS INSTEAD OF ONE, OR TWO. Debbie of Huntington Beach, CA July 8, 2009 A Roper refrigerator bought in August of 2007 caught fire on Dec. 18, 2007. The smoke from the fire caused my Mother's death. Model: RT14BKXSQ Item #: 236069 Fire Marshall stated fridge caused fire Report Your Experience
