Stephen of Alexandria VA (08/08/08) Our 19 year old son purchased a vehicle from a private individual while out of state at college. The car had bad brakes. The brakes failed within the first 2 or 3 days of purchase, and he hit another vehicle. His was a late model vehicle, and the damage exceeded the value of the car. We donated the vehicle to a charitable organization. The owner of the other vehicle eventually submitted a claim.
Ever since that time, GEICO has been investigating the claim to establish whether we owned the vehicle at the time of the accident. Since my son had actual use of the vehicle for only a few days and bought it from a private individual whom he didn't know, there is no bill of sale. It took a lot of jumping through hoops to obtain a copy of the out of state title, and that was provided to GEICO. We provided copies of his payment on a loan he took out to purchase the vehicle. GEICO says the copy of the title is not good enough because it is dated after the accident. The loan papers are not acceptable because the loan was not secured by the vehicle. In short, all the documentation we have provided is not acceptable to them.
So now, they send us threatening letters to essentially put us under oath and take depositions. Is this how you treat a 30 year customer? Review the facts: A 19 year old kid buys a defective car. The brakes fail, and he hits a car. He provides evidence he has been paying on the car. He has evidence he held title to the vehicle. If he did not own the vehicle when he wrecked it, why would a 19 year old kid buy a wrecked car he would never get to drive? And if he did not own the vehicle at the time of the accident, wouldn't we have let the previous owner deal with all this hassle? GEICO refuses to accept the obvious and now treats us like we are engaged in fraud or something, instead of the loyal customers we have been over the past 30 year.
They refuse to acknowledge the obvious conclusion that can be drawn on the facts and do not even offer an alternative scenario to explain the facts that have been provided. Readers, it is a bit shocking to find that a company you trusted is only too willing to throw you overboard on the slightest whim. We are totally fed up and will be taking our business elsewhere, something our 30 year record of loyalty would suggest is something we do not do on a whim.
Right now, the consequences are the aggravation of being sent threatening correspondence. The potential consequences are GEICO's potential refusal to pay a just claim Brandy of Fremont, IN August 1, 2008
Brandy of Fremont IN (08/01/08) I have been insured with Geico for over 3 years. I've never been in an accident, gotten a ticket, or even made a claim. My credit has defnately improved in those tree years.
I receied my renewal notice in the mail yesterday and my rates increased over 200!! I'm a single mother of four, that kind of money isn't easy to come by.
I spoke to a representative that told me the increase was due to an increased rate for my state (which is Indiana). How ridiculous it that!!
Now I am looking for a new insurance provider for my van, my motorcycle, and my home.
I used to speak highly of Geico, and recommended them to everyone. They could atleast send out a detail of why an increase is made, as well as billing rates.

Edna of Dumfries, VA July 29, 2008
Edna of Dumfries VA (07/29/08) Called to get auto insurance policy reinstated and was told an amount. I authorized that amount and was transferred to the Reinstatement Department. Once to that department I was told I needed an additional 800 to reinstate the policy. Once I explained that was not what I was just told, they apologized on behalf of the other representative. I told them at that time, I wished to have a refund for the previous amount I had just authorized. They told me that would be fine and processed the request.
When I looked at my account this morning, the amount had been taken from my account after I was told it would be refunded. GEICO would not refund my monies.
Bounced checks and bank fees because I was told one thing and something else happened. Debbie of Largo, FL July 18, 2008
Debbie of Largo FL (07/18/08) I have been a Nationwide customer for 10 years, with impeccable credit scores, and recently became aware of the fact that my daughter (who is a full time, straight A graduate student) was to be dropped due to her non-preferred classification (she had 4 not at fault accidents in the past 3 years)... Although my agent was looking for options for us, out of curiousity, I began looking myself. What a mistake!!!
In my quest to ONLY get a quote, I found myself committed to two policies from Geico (since the Geico online system only allows you to enter 3 vehicles in one transaction)... When I finally called the customer service number on July 14th and spoke to Patrick, he assured me that he was able to make one policy with all 4 cars and drivers at a cost of 2,136.80.....To me, that was an amazing offer, and I eagerly allowed Geico to take 292.42 from my checking account. I had no idea that they were expunging another 382.01 the next day (7/15), for the second policy (that was supposedly combined with the first one the day before)...
Within just 48 hours, the quoted cost for our insurance doubled....to over 4,700.00 FOR a 6 month premium (after they removed almost 700.00 from my account!!!) We have cancelled all policies (THANK GOD) and will patiently await the refund they promise.... If I were to make a request of this company, it would be to take a breathe, think it through, and wait 48 hours to give your customers a reasonable quote.... I would much rather know your bottom line FIRST... than to be tricked into a commitment after the promise.. hopefully the continous postal (and email) correspondence will come to an end soon...
