In September, 2008 we had a massive storm with winds in excess of 70 mph gusts. Our roof did not have any shingles missing so we did not know it was damaged. However, upon further inspection we found at least 20 to 25% of our shingles are completely loose and no longer have their seal. Obviously the shingles have not unglued themselves. The majority of the loose shingles are in the front of the house, directly in the path of the wind. This was a substantial storm and also took down 4 mature trees on our property.

We contacted State Farm and they sent out a claims adjuster. The first adjuster said she would only pay to have the shingles reglued down. We contested that. State Farm sent out another adjuster and this adjuster said there was no storm damage to their guidelines. He has said they will not pay anything on our roof claim. We have had two reputable roofing companies come out and both of them have said the roof is damaged and needs to be replaced.

They have agreed the damage was from wind. We do not know what to do next. We called Owens Corning and the shingles are only guaranteed for 60 mph winds. We have been customers of State Farm for over 10 years now with no homeowners claims prior.

State farm covered a major flood claim in March '08..I used thier premiere service. They provide their own contractors with a 5yr warranty on labor and materials in 8mos the water heater they replace flooded my basement.I have been on the phone for 4 days (with no hot water) arguing with the adjuster and All tech appliance service. I've been told a number of stories ranging from 1) you have to use your new insurance co.and pay the deductible. 2)I have to call the manufacturer and deal with them, but no one has the bill of sale and no one is responsible because it wasn't alltech's fault that the water heater was defected...

I have 2 reputable plumber's opinion that it's rare for this to happen so soon and that they think they banged the water heater around bringing it up 38 steps..There's glass inside...I would prefer to use my own plumber, but they didn't even offer to replace it...my son called state farm and all tech and they are now lying to him and telling him that I was abusive on the phone and don't want thier service...All the appliance work state farm issued to them had to be redone...They also left me with no heat and told me I had heat All I want is for this to be resolve the right way...They should've been right here replacing the appliance

at least 1500.oo in damages including the water cleaned up and treated for mold

Geneva of Petersburg, TN October 28, 2008

Geneva of Petersburg TN (10/28/08)
My house burned to the ground Aug 15th, 2007. I was the only person at home and it was early morning while I was sleeping. My husband was away on a job. My daughter and her husband with my two grandchildren lived with me because my health was not the best , so they had moved in to help to maintain it. The children had already left for school and the others to work. They never wake me in the mornings so I know they had to leave at around 6;30.

The alarm never went off and when I awoke the house was engulfed with smoke. I went out my bedroom window. We lived in a rural area and by the time I was able to get help it was much to late.We lost everything. It was a 1960 sq.ft. home.We were all devastated.

State farm was contacted that afternoon and they prceeded to set us up in a local motel. The next day we met the claims rep. Kenyon Nelson who gave us a check for 5000.00 .

At that point I really thought that they were going to take care of us.

I can't complain about paying the mortages off. That was all great , but when it came to our contents, that was a different story. Now I may be off a little on exact amounts but the outcome was still the same.I had replacement cost. But I guess I never really understood what that meant.

I had 157.000.00 on personal property. The hardest thing I have ever had to do was to try and remember what everyone of us had. Kenyon told us to make a list of everthing, but he never was clear to us about how replacement cost worked.

Now it becomes our word against his. He says he went into complete detail about it and Out of 157.000 we recieved 54,000. We Finally did get an extra 14,000. after coming up with reciepts.

So at this point we had the papers of the contents and what they paid on our items, how much they depreciated and the remaining benefits owed to us. So again we were told we had a year from the date of the fire to replace our items to be able to recieve the remaining benefits.

What was left owing us was 40,000. My husband and I had decided because of our age and our health not to rebuild.

But we spent a year trying to replace necessary items for us and our children with what they had given us prior. As hard as we tried there was still no way we could come up with 40,000 in receipts. With all of us and the economy the way it was the most we were able to come up with was 17,000. So by the time we turned them in we were really upset because we know we weren't getting what was owed to us, but we knew there was absolutely nothing we could do about it.

It took Kenyon 2 months to go through everything and a couple of weeks ago he said it was ready. But the check was for 2,300 because we had not met whatever????? He said he explained it all to us over and over which never happened and it again becomes his word against ours.

So because we are ignorant of policies and the way it states we've lost big time on this. No amount of money could ever replace what we lost and now to lose what is rightfully ours because we did not understand the complete facts. But even if we had of understood , there is no way we could have replaced all we lost.

I believe they know exactly what they are doing with people such as us and they get out of giving people what is there's. So I have no idea if anything can be done but I do want other people to know how they work and how they have possibly cheated many many others with specifics that they don't explain to you!!!!!

! This has affected our family economically, mentally and emotionally. So if there is help out there we need it!!!

Casandra of Covington, GA October 27, 2008

Casandra of Covington GA (10/27/08)
In March of this year a very bad storm came thur Covington Ga. People had very bad hail damaged to their cars, homes. Trees were down and some poeple were without light. I called my insurance company and filed a claim for hail damaged to the roof of our home. The adjuster came and we were told that the damage was from a tree that had fell on the home prior to our purchased and the adjuster denied the claim.

My husband later was on the roof and discovered that most to the damaged done to the roof was on the opposite end of roof no where near the area where the tree felled. But because we didn't know any better and took his word the claim was not paid. Recently we had another insurance adjuster come out and we were told that we did have hail damaged and the most damage area was on the other end of the house that was not near area that the tree fell. I wonder how many more innocent customer was told that they didn't have a claim so that State Farm didn't have to make any payments.

Now since the roof has gone so long without being repaired. It will cost a lot more than what it would have costed had the State Farm adjuster done the proper and correct thing in the beginning. We pay insurance preminum every month and the one time that you need them, They SCAM the customer.

Leonore of Pineville, LA October 19, 2008

Leonore of Pineville LA (10/19/08)
I have a history with State Farm Insurance as I was a victim of Hurricane Katrina when my house flooded in Metairie, Louisiana. It took over 1 1/2 years to finally settle that claim.

On September 1, 2008, during Hurricane Gustav, a 75-foot oak tree fell into my home causing severe structural damage. I have received a total of three estimates from local, licensed contractors estimating damages well over State Farm's offer of 29,000 and with the deducible subtracted, they sent a check for 21,232. The field adjuster for State Farm consistently has refused to acknowledge my telephone calls, even though his voice message states he will return calls within 24 hours. I have requested multiple times that a senior adjuster come to my home, and none have even contacted me.

I filed a formal complaint with the Lousiana Department of Insurance on October 6, 2008. I provided detailed information to them from a journal I have maintained since placing the claim on September 1st at 8:30 pm. I also have over 300 pictures of damages.

Within the same work week of filing a formal complaint with the Dept. of Insurance, I received a call from an agent in the State Farm Claims office in Dallas, TX. I was asked to fax in only the estimate for the contractor I wished to perform the repairs. I was told then a team leader would call to schedule an appointment with me and my contractor at my home. I did what was requested on October 8, 2008. I have consistently been following up with telephone calls, but was told no adjuster had been assigned yet for the second inspection.

My last follow up call for a senior adjuster was October 16th. Then suddenly on October 17th, my contractor called to say a State Farm adjuster called him to schedule an appointment to meet at my home on Friday, October 24th at 10am. When he told me the adjuster's name, I was shocked. It is the same adjuster that had performed the first inspection (the one who never returned my calls).

I immediately updated my complaint with the LA Dept. of Insurance. I also called the State Farm Claims office in Dallas TX who had assigned this adjuster. I asked for a coporate address to mail a formal complaint. I was told there was no corporate address for complaints, and all complaints were handled verbally. I was transferred to a supervisor who confirmed the verbal complaint process. I filed a verbal complaint, then asked for the name of this adjuster's supervisor. Imagine! No name could be located in the system, but I was assured that an electronic complaint would reach the adjuster's supervisor. I feel strongly that State Farm is intentionally ignoring me in an effort to extend this matter so I will not pursue this claim to completion.

Not only am I a victim of two hurricanes, but now I am a victim of discrimination by State Farm for having two hurricane claims. It is devastating enough to have to suffer these losses, but State Farm is adding insult to injury through their harrassing and discriminatory practices.
