UnumProvident Agrees to "Sweeping Reforms"
In Settlement with NY, Unum Agrees to Review Denied Disability Claims
Unum Class Action Filed
$31 Million Jury Verdict
Georgia Fines Unum $1 Million

A class action suit charges that Unum systematically denies disability claims. The complaints we receive do nothing to dispel that notion. For a particularly outrageous chain of events, see Judy's Story.

I am a breast cancer survivor for 5 yrs. now. went back to work after 10 months. I am now burned out with anemia, back pains, gastric, and depression. My doctor said to go on leave of absence to work to get my life back.  After 3 months since my doctor said take off, unumprovident/hsbc has still not approved my claim after suppying all documentation requested by them.

This has caused me financial stress, which is effecting my mental and physical condition. This has made me feel there is no life after cancer especially when you are trying and things like this stop you!

I have dealt with several persons from Unum and locations are different. I submitted a complaint in October 2008 but I didn't see mine so I am rewriting/resubmitting. I was taken off work in June 2007 and have not worked since, I subsequently retired in order to keep my medical going. I received disability payments from Unum for a year of a two year plan and they sent me to their doctor who wrote that I should be able to work on a part time basis, which was not possible. I have and still have excruciating pain in my back.

I have gone through the appeal process and have even given them doctors notes continuously and they still have not rescinded my benefits based on a doctors review that only saw me for approx 5 minutes. (it took me approx. 1 hour to get to their doctor) I feel that the doctor is probably paid to go against my doctors review. If their doctor had tested me, had me stoop, sit etc. I would have more respect for his decision because the outcome I feel would have been different. He would have noticed the pain that I am having, but he didn't. His report mentioned many things that I feel should not have had anything to do with my current condition.

Now that I am in the appeals process, they have submitted it to another level. I am currently seeing a chiropractor and the treatment is doing some good as oppose to the treatment I was getting from therapist and shots from the doctor however, I am still not 100% but I feel that I am getting there. COMPLAINT: I PAID FOR UNUM PROVIDENT WHICH WAS CALLED INCOME PROTECTION AND INSTEAD THEY DEFAULTED ON WHAT i paid for.

to be back paid for the months not paid and paid until which time I am able to either go back to work or if not pay me for the number of months in my policy as long as I can't work. They put me in a HUGE FINANCIAL SITUATION WHICH I WAS TRYING TO AVOID WHEN I GOT THE INSURANCE.

I took ill on 9/15/06 from my job to ER with pulmonary embolism. I did receive STD from Unum Ret to work 11/03/06 but had great difficulty doing my job as nurse liason for an HMO. on 12/12/06 My dr put be back out on disability for newly diagnosed Peripheral vascular disease, worsening Asthma, and Psoriatic Arthritis and Hypertension.

I filed and collected STD but Unum insisted I file for Social Security Disability. Well I did and received Permanent Social Security Disability . I kept Unum aprised of all awards and my medical condition and complied with all requests they asked for, My award was reduced to offset the social security disability I was receiving.

Then one day Unum decided they would not pay any longer so they didnt. they said they overpaid me so the 1400 a month was being held to pay back 24000. This caused me to be unable to pay for my medication to take the pain away. I have sinced been diagnosed with cancer and cant afford the co-pay to have it removed. I am unable to pay my mortgage on time so It will most likely go into forclosure and I wont have a place to live. I paid into this disability plan at work for 4 yrs so I would not have to do without if I were to become ill. Now I cant afford food or co pays for medication or hospital care nothing. They were supposed to cover me for 3 years and they only covered me for 1 yr

Colleen of Oceanside, NY October 9, 2008

Colleen of Oceanside NY (10/09/08)
I had an acoustic neuroma removed in March of l998. Have not worked since. I am balance problems and headaches right after surgery. I was getting short term disability then they stopped and they did not want to give me long term disability. I did the reassment in 2004 and again I was denied. An attorney in California advised me that the statute of limitations ran and that they could not help me.

I am getting social security disability. I have three children and it has been very difficult for me. I have not worked since, because I am still disabled. It is very hard since there is no money coming in on social security disability, and help from my family.

I do not think that this is fair. I worked for twenty years and I got disabled and could not work and I was paying into an insurance who did not do anything for me. They were horrible people to deal with. I have been collecting social security disability since 2002. Please help.

Linda of Phoenix, AZ October 8, 2008

Linda of Phoenix AZ (10/08/08)
i purchased disability insurance thru my employer discover financial, at no time did human resources state it was a policy from unum. i purchased the coverage at my expense because my husband had passed away after a very lengthy illness-we lost our home, our business, and most import our dignity. I was led to believe by discover financial that if i were to become ill i would continue receiving a portion of my salary.

it has been four plus years and a constant battle with unum-they would call almost on a daily basis with a barage of questions -like can you open a can? a bottle of milk etc. to date I have had to cash in my 401 k and i took numerous loans from discover/morgan stanley just to survive.

in march of this year my claim was denied because unum felt i was not ill enough-according to unum they hired someone to follow me to the grocery store and observed me purchasing bottled water, milk and bread. so my claim was denied because i could walk- what their letter did not state is-i have to park in disabled parking, if i spend any time in a grocery store it takes me 4 to 5 days to recover due to the pain. my diagnosis was fibromyalgia- i am in pain 24 hours a day

i paid into this plan for 9 years according to the physicians i am unable to work- I have nothing left not even my dignity-what a sad state when i read that their employees receive incentives for denying claims.
