It's been said that canceling AOL is harder than eradicating the common cold. It seems that AOL wants to be your Internet-service-for-life.

I have been billed for the use of AOL that I canceled 6 months ago.

I use another service to get on the internet. I ask them to credit my account back and they would not do it.

I purchased a new computer, and AOL was supposed to stop billing me for the past 6 months. However, they billed me 30 per month and said it is because I did not change my existing screen name.

Edward of Belleville, MI October 15, 2007

Edward of Belleville MI (10/15/07)
I was in the process of moving from Detroit, and told AOL I no longer needed the service they were providing. I closed my account at my credit union, and moved out to Belleville. One day I decided to run a credit check when I was denied a checking account at my new local bank. Come to find out that AOL billed my former credit union approximately 250 after I closed both accounts. Ruined my credit rating, and I can't even open a bank account now.

Credit is ruined, tougher to get a job with BAD CREDIT.

Connie of Sierra Madre, CA October 14, 2007

Connie of Sierra Madre CA (10/14/07)
I cancelled AOL service about a year ago when I went with high-speed cable internet. Now this week (October 2007) I get a call from collections (the person was clearly from India) saying I owe 50+ and they were unable to charge my account because it wouldn't take the charge. I was upset because this always seems to happen these days. I told this guy that I had not heard anything about owing them anything until today and that I cannot pay him or anyone without receiving a statement, and he said they wouldn't send one. Do they really think we can just pay someone who phones us at the drop of a hat, without even knowing for sure we are really talking to an AOL employee? There's a lot of dishonesty in business today!

The stress these encounters cause is critical, and knowing that a company can charge you for things you don't order or even know you have, randomly and at will, is scary.

Suzann of Somers Point, NJ October 12, 2007

Suzann of Somers Point, NJ (10/12/07)
Until spring of 2007 our personal e-mail was through Compuserve, which was automatically billed to a credit card every month.  We canceled that account and began seeing a new and different amount charged to our credit card from AOL.  At no time did we ever subscribe to an AOL service nor did we give them permission to bill our credit card.

I have tried repeatedly to discuss with AOL and the one time I was able to get through to a person he said he could not discuss the account with me because it was not in my name, even though the credit card they were billing to was in my name. He wouldn't even tell me who opened the account or the name of the e-mail address.
