Ft. Worth Star-Telegram

Robert of Ft. Worth writes:
Several months ago I was late on a monthly payment to the Star Telegram. Mike, my delivery person, came to my house while I was at work. My wife and my 7 month old daughter were playing in our backyard.

Mike went around to the backyard and never announced himself until he was standing right behind my wife. She nor I have never been introduced to Mike so as far as she was concerned he could have been anyone, and it did scare her. Mike then told her that we were late on our payment. She told him that I take care of it and he would need to talk to me.

I did pay him by check, $10.95, but the check later bounced. Within the next few weeks my wife contacted the Star Telegram about cancelling our subscription. A week later, I contacted the Star Telegram myself to ask how much I owed to include the bad check. At the time I was in the middle of changing banks.

I was told that $12 would cover the bad check and the balance. I asked if that would cover the bad check again. And was again told that it would.

Three months later I came home from work and found a billing statement with a memo from Mike, stating that I had until July 30 to send him a money order for $21.95, or he was going to take it to the DA (District Attorney).

I immediately tried to contact Mike to discuss the issue with him, but was unable to get hold of him. I then tried calling the billing office and was given the number for Billy. I told Billy about this memo and how it upset me that I was being threatened after I was under the impression that all was well. Billy said that he would have his supervisor, Tim, call me back.

When Tim called me back I told him about the memo and how I was upset about it and felt that it was very uncalled for.

I also asked him three questions:

  • Why it took three months for him to notify me about the check,
  • Why I was told intially that the check would be taken care of with a $12 payment, and
  • What the $11 was added to the $10.95 that the check was written for, which I later reallized was for a bounced check fee.

Tim told me that he was unsure about this and would get back in touch with me. The following week Tim called me back and told me that everything was settled and not to worry about it any more.

The following Saturday Mike parks his van in front of my driveway (as if to block me from leaving), walks up to my house looking in the living room window and then knocks on the door. I was in the backyard and when I noticed the van parked at the end of my driveway I was coming toward the front when my wife and Mike were walking to the side of the house.

Mike introduced himself and said, "I'm here to collect."

I then told him that I had discussed the issue with Tim who told me that I did not need to worry about the payment.

"That's not what my supervisor told me," Mike said. I told him that I was sorry but I'm going by what Tim told me. He then turned to walk back to his van as my wife and I turned to go back into the house.

I heard him say, "If I find out any different I'm turning this into the DA's office."

I then turned toward him and said, "You know, I don't appreciate being threatened like that." He then started going off on me saying, "It's people like you who purposely write hot checks...I've got a family to support too you know."

Since then I have contacted Billy again about this and told him about this. I have yet to hear from Tim. But I feel that Mike has been very unprofessional on numerous occasions and I will just go to the store and buy the Sunday edition of the Dallas Morning News.

My wife was scared and felt very uncomfortable about Mike coming into the backyard without acknowledging himself first. We felt very uncomfortable with Mike looking in our windows prior to him knocking on our front door. I was very upset to be threatened as I was after three months of believing that everything was ok. And then being threatened again and having my finances brought out in front of all my neighbors.
