Jackie of Bethesda, MD December 16, 2008

Jackie of Bethesda MD (12/16/08)
A sales representative called our retirement community and asked our assistant to confirm our address and phone number. They then asked for her name. A week later, we received an invoice for 494.40 for internet advertising. We have never advertised with this organization nor would we ever.  When I called American Online to clear up this business matter, I was spoken to rudely and was told that they had verbal authorization from our assistant.

I stated that she never authorized this nor did she have the authority to do so. I asked to meet with someone and I was refused. I was told that they would gladly speak to our attorney. They would not give me their attorney information. I ended the call abruptly by stating that we would NOT pay for this unauthorized service and that I would be filing a complaint.

I was called and asked to update my yellow pages ad. I did and they offered a service for 29.95 a month which they say I confirmed, and never did. I know through my phone bill have a charge. Thankfully my phone provider credited me, so these people who admittedly say they are tricking people to sign up will never get anyone else s money.

They charge 29.95 to your regular monthly phone bill

Susan of Milford, NH November 14, 2008

Susan of Milford NH (11/14/08)
When I started a new business in 2005 I received what I thought was a confirmation of my local yellow pages. I signed the back and returned it. Within a few months I started receiving bills for 297.I realized it was for a service I would never see as the bill comes from NJ-- it says charges for previously PUBLISHED editions. I went out of business within the year, but they are now sending bills to my home. It is up to 1782 which I cannot pay. The phone number is not even in service.

I am worried that they will come after me for the money and I cannot pay this and have no intention of paying it. I want the bills to stop.

Rick of Monrovia, CA October 17, 2008

Rick of Monrovia CA (10/17/08)
We have been Advertising in the Yellow Pages for several years. Every year up to 2005/2006 we have gotten a phone call from Verizon to verify/make changes to our order. Since then the Add has appeared in the yellow pages, which we have paid reluctantly. I believe we spoke to them last year, told them this was the last year and that I did not want and did not sign up for the automatic renewal. And this year I called them on 6/17/08 at 1:35PM and told them we did not want to pay for the advertising.

The person I spoke to said they would take care of it, because no one authorized the order, it was an automatic renewal. This account has now gone into collections. I called today, spoke to Rosemary and was told it was too late and would have to pay the invoice. (I guess the cutoff this year is in April). When I told her I did not authorize the order, she just laughed and said we automatically renewed last year. The bottom line is they should be calling each year, like they have in the past to verify renewal and to see if there are any changes that need to be made. (Example: My address changed).

Pam of Tacoma WA (04/21/08)
Received bill from Yellow Pages which I paid in the amount of 284. Thought they were affiliated with Yellow Book which has the same logo. Filed report with Better Business Bureau who was not able to obtain my refund. Add my name to the list of those scammed. Keep getting billed from these yahoos. Received another one today. Sure would like my money back plus damages!
