How does U-Haul work?

U-Haul offers moving trucks for local and long-distance moves. Because U-Haul has so many locations, it’s usually easy to request a truck for a last-minute move, depending on factors like your location and the time of year, such as during peak moving season.

U-Haul reservation guarantee

If your reservation was scheduled at the time of booking with confirmed equipment and a confirmed time and location, your reservation is guaranteed. However, sometimes the location, time or equipment can’t be guaranteed ahead of time. In some cases, U-Haul will pay a $50 reservation guarantee.

It can help to call your preferred U-Haul location ahead of time to check on availability and have flexible plans so you can pick up a truck at another location if necessary.

U-Haul costs

U-Haul’s local moves start at $19.95. Its rates include a flat fee for the rental period and a per-mile charge.

Example: local move cost

We collected sample quotes for a move within Tulsa, Oklahoma on a Saturday in April. All costs are accurate as of March 13, 2026.

Example: long-distance move cost

Safemove Plus comes with all that Safemove comes with, plus $1 million in supplemental liability coverage and no deductible.

Storage

U-Haul’s storage services include one-year price lock, climate control, business storage options, vehicle storage and portable storage. Certain U-Haul locations also offer free 30-day storage, which is a big perk most other moving companies can’t match.

Roadside assistance

All U-Haul truck rentals come with roadside assistance in case anything should go wrong during your trip. For a flat $5 fee, renters can add on Safetrip service, which includes coverage for jump starts, lockouts, fuel or stuck vehicles.

Other services

Other U-Haul services include loading, unloading, packing, unpacking, heavy furniture moving, home cleaning, moving supplies and trailer hitches.

Sunday afternoon, 12-hours from moving, U-Haul calls me and tells me that there is no truck available. Reservation was made over a month before. The only solution is change the moving date or driving 3 hours out of my way to get a truck.

I reserved a motorcycle trailer 3 months in advance for a cross-country move. I wanted to make sure it was taken care of because, as with most long moves involving a closing on one end and a closing on the other, logistics are critical. Naturally, the day before the move U-Haul corporate in Nashville TN called to tell me the location I picked wouldn't have a trailer. Of course it wouldn't, they never do. A reservation with U-Haul is like Satan's easter egg hunt. That sucker is out there someplace but who knows where. I expected that because U-Haul is a horrible time suck hole that lives to jack up your plans. The surprise was that I was going to make to make a 2 hour round trip to another state to pick the trailer they did have up.

To say I lost my temper after the only help I got was an "I'm very sorry", would be a gross understatement. While I never called the fun sucker on the other end of the line anything off color directly, I did invent some compound cursing words right on the spot. She hung up, just like I would have done. I have no issue with that. However, as I standing in my local U-Haul dealership trying to fix this goat rope, I find out that they had canceled my reservation completely leaving me with nothing but a note on the computer that I was "rude" and "hard to deal with". When I called corporate back to talk about that, they wouldn't answer the phone. When I called back again, Macy, the "superior" of the person I had talked to harshly answered and told me she was the one that canceled the reservation because "we didn't want to mess with your reservation anymore".

When I talked to the boss of the "superior" (she didn't have a title; but I assume it was something like chief disappointer) she informed me that it is a H-Haul corporate policy to cancel a reservation when they have an "issue" with a customer. I can imagine. If you're disappointing people every time you deal with them, like they had called your house and asked to borrow their car, I guess you would get used to people screaming at you and take self-serving action to not have to listen to it. If I die and I have to use U-Haul to get to heaven, I will gladly shake hands with the devil and ask where my coal shovel is.

I would like to recognize Asia at the U Haul location in Olive Branch, Mississippi, for providing exceptional customer service. I came in on May 25th dealing with a very stressful situation and in need of assistance to continue my move for the day. Asia was extremely proactive, professional, and helpful throughout the entire process. She went above and beyond to ensure that I was able to get a U-Haul and continue with my move without further delays. Her attitude, patience, and willingness to help truly stood out and made a difficult day much easier for me. Asia’s customer service was absolutely top tier, and I would definitely recommend her to anyone needing assistance. Thank you again, Asia, for your kindness and outstanding support!

I returned the truck. I asked the person who take the key from me to give me a printed receipt then the manager jumped and said, "You have to wait 20 minutes." I said, "I wait, no problem." He replied have said but screamed at me. Please look at the camera. And I said, "I prefer to stand." He said in very bad manner, "I told you seat and wait," and I said, "I prefer to stand," then he started saying ** word many times and, "I don’t have to deal with this shit."

He go out, take him little while and looking at him leaving the truck and going the other side. He comes back printed a copy of receipt for me but it was not mine or my name on it, it was for someone call Marcus. Please check the cameras. When I said, "This not my receipt," he screamed and said, "I have to remove you from my store," and come out and started punching me with his body. Someone should be held responsible and he never give me my receipt. Horrible person, horrible management, very bad and old truck they have unsafe for anyone to drive.

I'd go for no stars if it was possible. So a older lady rented a U-Haul. Ask if I could drive since she couldn't being disabled. I agreed. U-Haul made me sign for the truck as I was the driver. Then when they charged her it failed and they flagged me 'cause I was on contract. As I said I was a driver but I did ask the li'l fat dude if I drive I don't wanna get charged as the driver. "Oh no you won't. It's for insurance reasons." Ok so I signed 'cause she didn't have money. A week later they charged me as the payee and now I'm flagged.

I found out 9 months later when trying to rent a storage unit the lady at their site ualert.com online said it was a year ago. I said, "No it was 9 months ago." I asked to talk to her supervisor and she only said no every time. Finally I said, "This is crap and illegal. Put your boss on the phone now please." The lady hung up on me instead. They only BS you and are rude as hell. I was told I wouldn't be liable by their staff but look now I'm the one being chased and getting negative credit and banned from renting any of U-Haul stuff not the elderly lady who rented it. Seems fair, right??

No problems with pick up in S.C. But went to return and it was a joke and I’m trying to be nice. Owner would not help me disconnect the hitch from my truck, after multiple attempts to do it myself (72 yrs old). I ended up paying a random guy $10 for 10 seconds of work. Do not do returns at Stay-Lite tobacco shop in Durham, NC on Guess Rd unless you’re big enough to remove the hitch!!!

May, 2024. U-Haul destroyed my up to date storage unit just three days after I rented it. Employees kept items, customers and vagrants picked through my belongings. Some went in the dumpster and others in a trash truck with infested items from other units. The company admitted 100% fault and promised to settle — but two years later, I still haven’t received a dime. I’ve mailed claim forms 3 times.

They eventually restricted my access which interfered with my ability to sell items to survive. I was warned by an employee that I was about to be trespassed, I left and stayed away for 2 months and U-Haul used this opportunity to take action against me. They started charging me without me signing a contract. They unlawfully auctioned off the three additional units they had promised me as long as I needed for free. They “tried to make” contact by using an old address they knew was not current & calling old phone numbers. The certified letter was delivered the day of the auction but they still followed through. Unlawful.

I even spoke with U-Haul’s own CEO, who called the whole situation a ‘PR nightmare after the first incident and seemingly blowing it off the second time by suggesting I ask the MCP (regional manager) to McDonalds for an ice cream cone to discuss the incident.’ I sent a demand letter to the company in September 2025 with no response.

I highly recommend that no one trust U-Haul with their personal items. Later I found out that my unit wasn’t on camera, the door alarm didn’t work. The parking lot was not well lit or gated. My door lock was the only security protecting my unit. They had a history of break in’s that also wasn’t disclosed. BAD BUSINESS PRACTICES AND MANAGEMENT from CEO to CSR. Online reviews on U-Haul's website reviews and the BBB suggest a pattern of harm.

My recent experience, dealing with Marcus at this U-Haul location was not only negative, it actually made me fear for my safety. The employee I dealt with was named Marcus, I believe. He cursed at me, threatened me, and tried to do physical bodily harm to me because I was questioning why the process was different this time versus the previous location I was at on the same day. Specifically I was questioning why he added additional miles on top of what I said I would be driving and why he was taking my picture because the previous location did not do that. At that point, he got upset started calling me the ** and yelling at me because I told him that was not my name and I was a customer. He then told me to come outside so he could “kick my ass”.

This is one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had as a customer in my life. The person I dealt with, has no business being employed by any business or corporation that intends to be professional and treat their customers with respect. My identity has been compromise several times, so I was naturally curious as to why he was taking my picture and why he had to immediately call the person I listed as my emergency contact when the previous location that I attempted to rent with didn’t do any of those things. All he had to do was explain the policies he was required to follow. Instead, he decided to turn to someone else and ask them to finish helping me because I was “…tripping…” and “…giving him a hard fucking time for no reason…”.

I’ll be leaving a Google, better business bureau, and consumer reports review reflecting my experience being threatened and cursed at for asking questions. The young man that I had the unfortunate experience of dealing with belongs in a completely different line of work that does not include the need for basic customer service or civil human interaction skills. On top of all this, the truck I was given had the check engine light on and severe transmission issues. I told the GM immediately before leaving and she said I had to keep it because their machine said it was safe to drive… I was worried about breaking down the whole day I had the truck. At this point, I do not feel safe or comfortable returning the vehicle I rented back to that location and couldn’t recommend any other customer ever visiting. I have also reached out to U-Haul’s corporate office and no one has responded… Best regards.

I needed to empty my Mother's condo in another state after her passing. I had used the U-Haul app and reserved a 15' box truck that I was to pick up after flying to my destination. During the week leading up to pick up I had received multiple offers from U-Haul to tow back one full trailer that U-Haul had been contracted to transport for a reduced fee behind my rented truck. After rejecting those offers my reserved truck was suddenly not available less than 24 hours before my reservation. After scrambling and multiple calls back to U-Haul a truck was found 36 miles away. Nothing was offered for compensation for the cancelation or cost of an Uber ride to pick up the truck other than the option to use a much larger truck that I did not need or would have been comfortable driving.

We rented a truck that was breaking down and stalling out. We called and they had us go all the way back to the rental place and then gave us another truck. We were charged full price, almost missed a deadline and not one apology from the place we rented from! I left them a detailed review and no one ever called me to offer a partial refund or a sincere apology!
