What is Zippy Shell?

Zippy Shell is a moving company that specializes in portable self-storage and moving container rental. You can choose DIY packing and loading or work with one of its partners for a full-service move. Zippy Shell delivers storage containers on wheels to your home or business, and you can fill them at your own pace before having them transported.

How does Zippy Shell work?

Zippy Shell delivers self-storage moving containers, which you can load and have transported according to your schedule and preferences. The company offers 10- and 15-foot container options — you have up to three days to pack these vessels, which can be stored in Zippy Shell’s climate-controlled storage facility or delivered directly to your destination. The containers are on wheels, which makes them manageable on city streets, sidewalks and driveways.

How much does Zippy Shell cost?

Although Zippy Shell’s website doesn’t list prices, it does state that it requires 50% of your payment two days before delivery (the rest is due after your container lands at the destination warehouse or 31 days after your initial delivery date, whichever comes first). The final price depends on how far you travel, how much you take and when you move. A protection plan is available for all moves.

Still have questions?

Is Zippy Shell worth it?

Zippy Shell is worth it if you need flexible time and storage options for your move. It gives you three days to pack your belongings rather than charging hourly for loading, which can make for a less stressful experience. Its prices are reasonable, but its lack of pricing online makes comparison difficult. Zippy Shell is also available only in select states, so check its website to see if it operates in your area.

I would like to express my gratitude and respect for your service. I was told that a $420 of additional fuel surcharge has been imposed on my order. I felt it was totally unfair and unexpected. I protested with the customer service agent but knew that it is probably a corporate policy and cannot be avoided. To my surprise and pleasure, I spoke to a supervisor (Jashua) who listened to me, understood my point of view and was able to provide a relief. He took care of the surcharge. While I was a totally unhappy customer, I am now a fully satisfied and very happy customer. I appreciate PackRat/Zippy to hire such professional and courteous folks who care about business future and customer relationship. Best Regards.

I have sent letters to the business regarding this issue. The damage happened after ZippyShell / 1800 PackRat took possession of my belongings. They destroyed an irreplaceable bar chair that is part of a set, which is no longer useful with the missing chair, an oil space heater, two tall standing lamps, studio recording equipment, crushed boxes, broke the leg that I had made for my sewing machine table.

All of the items are no longer produced by the manufacturers. I will need to buy an entire new set of bar chairs. That is expensive and so far I have found nothing comparable. I will need to replace the other items with much more expensive facsimiles. The pod looked like a garbage dump when the movers opened the gate. It has already cost me considerable time, gas, tire wear, and car wear as I have searched for substitutes for what they destroyed. I have not found suitable substitutes after searching for almost 2 months.

The New York side movers who loaded the to pods were hostile. They ignored my repeated instructions on how to handle my belongings. They ignored the fragile stickers all over many of my boxes. They ignored my instructions as to how I needed the pod to be loaded. The foreperson was very hostile. He put boxes and objects on top of boxes that I had explicitly told him could NOT have anything placed on top of them. I had boxes that I had to create for some of my designs. They absolutely had to be placed as top boxes. I had to repeat myself endlessly and chase after them to repeat the same instructions. The foreperson harshly responded to my instructions by screaming that other people 'pack good' but that I didn't. His accusation had no basis in fact.

Before they left with the second pod, the foreperson demanded that I give him a 5-star review. He bullied me, claiming that it was 'required' of me to give that because his 'boss required it'. I was intimidated and he was aggressively hostile. It was all I had left in me to keep my composure and resist his bullying. I stated that I certainly will not give any review until I see my belongings in pristine condition on the destination side.

One of the people who did loading on the NY side did not even speak English, nodded to me as I gave instructions as if he understood and was complying with my instructions, then proceeded to mishandle my belongings in exactly the ways I had instructed him NOT to do. The Austin side people who unloaded were no better. They spoke no English at all. I managed to communicate only because I speak limited Spanish. It was extremely problematic to get the unload done successfully. They also complained about time when only 1 hr and 20 minutes had passed, when their time commitment was 3 hours.

The company uses third-party vendors who they don't vet. The third-party vendors are questionable. The pod company charges high rates for their service. They avoid accountability by using vendors whom they blame for their failure to keep their promises. The pod company charged $8300 to load and transport 2 pods from Brooklyn to Austin. I consider that to be an out-of-scope number. The moving industry is not regulated and is rife with bad actors. It is a breeding ground for people to get ripped off, charged excessive rates for their belongings to be destroyed. I want a refund of what I paid this company.

Got a quote from Zippy Shell. Got another quote and decided to go with the 2nd quote. Tried to call and cancel our order with zippy. It took at least 8 calls and hours of on hold. We even used the leave your number and you won't lose your space in line call back system and no one ever called us back. At least 3 times we used that service. Finally after multiple calls we got someone at customer service and our order was cancelled. Shouldn't have to be this hard. My option they have serious issues and won't be even getting any quotes from them ever again.

I would strongly urge that you do not use Zippy Shell for moving and/or storage. Because of how they handle and load furniture and other belongings there will mostly likely be damage during loading, transit and unloading. They do have a claim process, but it is worthless. The process is set up to default towards denying claims unless you have definitive proof they caused the damage. If you do make the unfortunate decision to use this company, then you will want to video the entire process to be able to provide the level of proof they need to pay the claims for the damage they cause. I would give a lower than one star rating if it was possible.

If I could give zero stars, I would. At first, business with them wasn't so bad, they had the cheapest rates we could find. But don't let this fool you, the hidden fees are in what damage they do to your property and how if you need a second pod for moving, they jack up the price and don't explain it. I paid roughly 1900 for a 16-foot pod, and 1600 for an 8, tell me how that makes sense. We're only getting to the worst part.

The worst part of it? They destroyed my fencing and tore up my landscaping. Dear reader, you may think this could just be a complication of where I live, how my property is situated, or whatnot, it isn't. The first driver we got successfully dropped off the first pod with no issues. The second, however, caused immense damage to my property. The driver that tore up my property refused to talk to us, drove off as soon as they could, and took absolutely no blame for their terrible driving skills.

Okay, fine, that sucks, but what about compensation for what happened? Well, at first Zippy Shell acted like they were going to make good on fixing what they broke. They made us get numerous estimates on fixing the damage, which we did. Upon receiving the estimates, they decided they'd rather squirrel their way out of responsibility rather than pay for their mistakes. They then proceeded to trick us by making us admit there was another vehicle on the property (which apparently could have been the cause of trucker's terrible driving) but I have over seven acres of property and my vehicle was nowhere near where he was operating. Nonetheless, they used this excuse to weasel their way out of paying us for their mistakes.

So, you may wonder? What can you do in a situation like this? The answer is pretty simple. Nothing. If you've made it this far, here's some advice. Video record every interaction you have with ANY moving place. Be sure you don't have a vehicle ANYWHERE on your property, it doesn't matter if it's out of the way. And the best advice of all I can provide, DO NOT EVER PURCHASE ZIPPY SHELL'S SERVICES!

If you don’t want to read the lengthy review, just save time, but DON’T use ZIPPY or its sister company, 800-Packrat. When I requested a quote, I made it very clear that I might need access to the container to add items, but wouldn’t know for about three weeks. I even shared personal circumstances so they would understand, and I was assured this wouldn’t be an issue, the container would remain in my origin city until I confirmed I was done.

When the container arrived, it looked like a beat-up practice unit, covered in dents and holes that made me question whether it was even safe for long-distance transport. When the door was opened, there was a severely damaged wire cage inside, with wires sticking out everywhere, exactly the kind of thing that would scratch or damage belongings. The container itself was full of dirt, trash, and was wet from the rain, which is completely unacceptable for something meant to protect personal items.

Only at “cage” drop off did I learn that they planned to haul the container two hours south, unwrap and re-wrap everything at a separate facility, and then ship it 1,500 miles, something they never mentioned in the quoting process. In short, the process was misrepresented from the start, and I feel I was blatantly lied to just to get my contract.

This was a terrible moving experience, probably the worst I’ve had. They randomly charge you without much info on what you’re paying for. When I have called, it takes 45 minutes to an hour of people researching to answer my questions. One employee took my card info down wrong and now I’m sitting in my new place with none of my things for the next 10-12 business days (2 weeks). Way too expensive for the caliber of service offered. If I could give no stars I would.

Go with PODS. My Zippy Shell container was dropped off and picked up on time, but it spent a week in a warehouse in LA instead of being shipped to DC immediately. I was told arrival would be between 24-26 and it’s being delivered “1 business day later” on a Monday. Threw off my hotel stay plans, work schedule and other logistics I had set up for my long distance move. When I called to speak to someone about the discrepancy- I was on hold a total of 45 minutes only to speak to someone who had no idea what was going on. I would pay the extra $200 PODS quoted me for the same service if I could do it again.

Be warned about Zippy Shell! I had a very disappointing experience with Zippy Shell. When I booked, the salesperson quoted me a flat fee of $3,000 and assured me there would be no hidden costs. In reality, I was charged $3,502.62 with extra fees for storage ($278.42) and gas ($224.20) that were never disclosed or agreed to. On top of that, I was promised delivery within 7–10 days. What I later found out is that this only meant delivery to Zippy Shell’s facility in the destination city, not to my actual new address. My container didn’t arrive at their facility until September 3, and then they refused to deliver to my home until September 8.

Customer service was dismissive and repeatedly hid behind “policy” instead of addressing the clear discrepancies. After researching, I found other customers reporting the same issues. I believe this reflects a pattern of deceptive business practices, and I cannot recommend Zippy Shell.
