Dialing for Gallons?
Not a Good Idea

Sure it's boring pumping gas, but Exxon would just as soon you didn't fill the idle minutes by chatting on your cell phone.

The company is posting notices at its self-serve pumps asking motorists to turn off their engines, refrain from smoking and stash their cell phones.

Exxon says it doesn't know of any problems caused by cell phones but is responding to reports that cell phone batteries could, under certain conditions, emit sparks that could cause an explosion.

"We believe this warning is appropriate in light of statements made by some phone manufacturers, who have cautioned their customers to switch off their phones when refueling," the company said in a statement.
