American children are catching up to their elders, unfortunately. More children are obese today than ever before in history and the eventual results aren't likely to be good.

Doctors fear that the earlier one becomes obese, the greater the chances of developing adult onset diabetes, heart disease and all the other disorders that go along with being overweight. The likely causes include inactivity and too much junk food but it's easier to assign blame than to actually do anything about it.

Inactivity, for example, is often blamed on television, the Internet and video games. But researchers have also found that many inner-city kids are inactive because it's not safe for them to go outside.
