To protect yourself from getting taken by a dating service, consumer experts recommend you:

• Research the company. Find out if there any complaints on file with ConsumerAffairs.com, the attorney general of your state, or other consumer protection agencies;

• Get a written contract. If an employee makes any verbal promises, make sure you get those in writing, too.

• Read the contract carefully, and be sure you understand all the provisions before you sign. Ask about the company's refund policy and how the company handles consumer complaints. What is your recourse is you are dissatisfied with the company's service?

• Never let anyone pressure you into joining;

• Be wary of any company that makes unbelievable claims or guarantees it will find you true love;

• Consider paying with a credit card. That way you can dispute the charge if you're not happy with the service. Consumers say It's Just Lunch only accepted cash or checks, no credit cards.

• Ask for references and be sure you check them;

• Ask if you can join on a trial basis. That way you're not locked into a long contract for service you may not like;

• Ask the company to document the number of active members it has on file, the ratio of men to women, and the number of clients who meet your specific criteria;

• Find out how much personal information the company shares about you with prospective dates. If you're using an Internet dating site, ask how it protects your privacy. Make sure it doesn't reveal your real name, address, or other identifying information that could put your financial or personal security in danger;

• Find out if the company does background checks on its clients. If it says yes, demand proof. It's Just Lunch does not do background checks, according to clients and former employees. "They told me they didn't have to because all their clients are professionals," said one client who was stalked by one of her IJL dates.
