Orlando World's Fair Targets Kids

By Dan Schlossberg

There hasn't been a World's Fair in the United States since 1984. That's about to change: the World's Fair for Kids opens in Orlando April 15 and will become an annual spring staple through 2015.

The first World's Fair to target a specific demographic group, the nine-day event targets kids and their families who want to explore the world together. It is expected to draw up to 400,000 people to the Orange County Convention Center.

Staples of the inaugural event are 18 themed pavilions, each focusing on a lifestyle "slice" of a kid's world, such as Kids in the Kitchen, Creative Kids, Sporting Kids, and Travel Kids.

There will also be six themed family exploration worlds, including health & wellness, technology, and a special World of Toddlers.

A focal point of the fair will be an indoor replica stadium for interactive sports, athlete appearances, and audience participation in nine attempts to top Guinness world records.

Live concerts and performances by well-known and rising stars will take place on in the performance zone, home of three entertainment stages. Scheduled events include the Spirit Cheer national cheerleading championships.

Admission ranges from $29.95 for a single-day passport to $44.95 for a two-day passport and $59.95 for a nine-day passport. Group and school discounts are available.

Sponsors include Amtrak, Avis, Family Fun Magazine, National Geographic Kids, Orlandoinfo.com, Radio Disney, Spirit Cheer, and American Tour & Travel, which organizes and runs trips for youth groups.

World's Fair for Kids is being promoted as an Official Orlando Family Spring Break event. It was the official Kids Day sponsor at the Florida State Fair in Tampa last month.
