Some 2003 and 2004 VW new Beetles may have a front crash sensor that could malfunction and compromise the safety of the front air bags, according to federal safety regulators.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Office of Defect Investigations (ODI) reports that the “frontal crash sensors may malfunction and can reduce the crash sensing ability in frontal crashes” in the new Beetle.

ODI has received 5 complaints from consumers about an air bag warning light illumination. VW has also provided federal safety regulators with “early warning data regarding warranty claims and field reports on the crash sensors within the air bag system.”

ODI has opened a preliminary evaluation to investigate the air back sensors failures.
