Beneful Pet Foods

Sue of Natchez, MS May 14, 2009

I have been using Beneful Dog Food for my dog and just last night discovered thousands of "mites" on the outside of the dog feeder. My brother noticed a white film on the top of the automatic feeder that looked like dust, when we went to wipe it off it felt wet...upon further inspection we realized that there were millions of tiny white bugs/mites that were moving around. I assumed that they had some how come in from outside and were trying to get inside the feeder to the food. We took the feeder outside to clean and investigate further.

This morning I decided to give him a fresh bowl of food from the sealed bag in my laundry room and to my dismay found that it was infested with these mites. I have seen this white film in the bag before but I thought it was just "dust" from the food...I never realized it was some sort of bug. I am now going to start cleaning out everything to make sure I have removed all of these mites or whatever they are. I am shocked at this and it makes me sick to know that I have been feeding this to my dog. I would like some sort of explanation concerning this finding.

Fired off complaint to Purina. There's a GROWTH in the Beneful Prepared Meal-Beef Stew. Unless melamine now comes in green and you can see it, it's probably mold since it's a mint green. Really starting to get annoyed these dog food firms can't get their blank together, esp. at the prices they charge!

Will see what the store has to say. Will chuck it if no satisfaction and switch to a decent brand if there is one out there!

Dog went intoheart failure and kidney failure and died after eating beneful dry food

Melinda of Corbin, KY November 15, 2008

Melinda of Corbin KY (11/15/08)
in July 2008 my Pomerania's that was preg got sick and i lost my puppies after feeding them Purina beneful.

i would like to say that as a pet owner and lover i have really been upset in the past few months. my breed little pomeranian's and love them very much so i try to get the best for them. soon as i found out that my little girls was with puppy's i went shopping for the puppy food high in the fats they need to help them. so i go out an buy Purina beneful and start on this right away.

i noticed my baby's was getting sick so i took one to the vet the one that was worse off, when i got her there the vet asked me does she always lay around in your lap like that and i said no, he took her back faster then you could say, HELP well he came back out, telling me he had to keep her over night and the puppies wasn't due for 2 weeks.

the very next morning i was called to be informed that my baby had Gaven birth to 5 and one was a still born. which upset me thinking i had don something wrong and all and then when i got her home she still wasn't acting herself.

then my other little girl went into labor and had hers and had 2 which one was a still born i got even more upset. the puppies was doing fine and was ready to start solid foods so i gave them Purina beneful they was health little ones at the time. i woke one morning to do the feeding and found one dead i cried all that day and then some it wasn't stopping.. a few days later i find another then another.

i was like ok this has got to stop, i thought it was due to the hardness of the dog food, but beneful is the moist food for puppies but i changed any ways so i got caned food for the the last one, poor guy was like a baby getting candy for the first time. then 2 weeks later my other pom that was ready to start solids was given the Purina beneful. and i be she took ill and past away over night, this hurt so bad to lose something that you love so much. i never took a thought about it but the little guy that made it was doing fine all hyper and playful full of spunk.

i started him back on Purina beneful a couple weeks ago and he fell so ill that i had to rush him into the vet. he was kept and was put on IV's, blood work done and everything under the sun nothing came back.he was sent home on meds, i have had him home for a week now was doing fine i was feeding him people food he was in his own little wonderland he was king of the house. i know i know bad thing to do but i had to get him eating and build his strength back up he was so so weak.

after i got him playing and all hyped up again i changed him little by little back to the Purina beneful. he eat maybe a few bites and when i say a few bites a bird or mouse would have eat more then what he had. he pushed it away i thought o no i done a bigg mistake on giving him people food. i went to feed him yesterday and what did i find a poor little guy sick again vomit all over diarrhea and he i was like what has went wrong. i noticed his water bowl is being filled all times 24/7 seems like and he pees alot. i took all foods away and called vet and he said i did the right thing and to watch him and if he get worse to let him know. a little later that day i seen the little guy shaking like he was so cold so i went and got the heating pad and put it in his bed he lays there like it helps him and come out and drinks goes back to bed. I'm having to take him right back to the vet in the morning an letting him know. the meds that he was on was something to help with kidneys and some kind of illness i never know dogs could have. i was getting 500.00 for my females and 450.00 for my males i lost alot due to this problem and it hurts to see something you love die.

Betsy of Framingham, MA April 18, 2007

My Maltese dog went into acute kidney failure in mid-February 2007 just 4-5 days after I began to give her Purina's Beneful Weight Control dry dog food. I had been feeding her Purina's Fit & Trim brand for several years but the stores I shop in recently had stopped carrying that brand in 5 lb. bags. I compared the ingredient lists, which seemed very similar, and figured that because Purina made them both, it would be safe to make the switch.

At first, we did not recognize our dog's failure to eat as a problem. She often ate only one meal a day and not always at the same time. My vet had told me it was a small dog's way of maintaining a steady weight. But when I had to stay home from work on Wed., Feb. 14, 2007, because of a serious snow storm, I could see a drastic change in our dog. She was listless and not drinking water. Late in the day she began to vomit.

I took her to the vet first thing Thursday morning and she was admitted to the hospital and put on intravenous fluids and antibiotics. The vet suspected kidney failure. I did tell the vet that she hadn't exhibited symptoms until after 4-5 days of eating a new food. As this was prior to any knowledge of the Menu Food debacle, the vet felt the new food would not have been a factor and it was more likely to do with the dog taking Enacard to lower her blood pressure to deal with a heart murmur. I had no reason to doubt this, except it kept nagging at me that the dog had not exhibited any of the warning signs I had been told to watch for until she ate the Beneful.

Unfortunately, the fluids and medicine made no improvement on her kidney function and we made the horrible decision to euthanize her on Sat., Feb. 17. The vet had told me there was no cure and that taking her off IV fluids would cause her to suffer greatly.
