Birdland

San Diego

Lynn of Chula Vista CA writes (8/1/01):
My husband and I purchased a Goffins Cockatoo 12/24/00. Although I'd had birds before, she was/is my first companion parrot. We did notice her wing feathers were jagged and uneven as if someone w/out experience had clipped the feathers. Also, she had no tail feathers (just soft down). When the saleslady was getting her ready she made the comment "...now you just need to grow a tail..." She also said "it wasn't necessary to take the bird to the vet." With a $700.00 purchase price, I most certainly did!! That's when I found out that the bird I'd bonded with (over the past month and loved very much by that time) was a "feather plucker/mutilator". We also purchased a Moluccan for $1800.00. We told the sales person that we both worked full time and she said "no problem." But it WAS a problem!! We had the Moluccan for 30 days. This bird was so distressed about being alone that it started to pull its feathers out. We realized that we couldn't meet the emotional needs of this bird and made the difficult choice to return him. They gave us $700.00 (basically we rented him for a month for $1100.) Bird lovers beware! With Lucy (Goffin) well, basically she's defective in that she has this neurotic, obsessive behavior (and will for the rest of her life -- 45+ yrs.) We've had to take her to the vet once already because she plucked and damaged a tail feather which resulted in HEAVY bleeding and a severe wound ($75.00). $185.00+ in blood work (attempt to determine cause). Last but, not least, I love this bird w/all my heart. I've done A LOT of research to insure I provide everything she needs (physically, mentally, and emotionally). She has periods when she's fine, feathers growing, etc... Then there's a setback, and she starts again. Emotionally, it's horrible. Each time she does it, I feel so guilty. It's as if I'm not meeting her needs and I have to wonder if she'll ever be consistently happy!
