Who likes cleaning out a litter box? No one we know, so it seemed like a great idea when LitterMaid came up with a self-cleaning box. Only trouble is, it doesn't seem to work very well. Despite that, even the most ravenously dissatisfied customers keep coming back like cats to catnip, buying one derelict pooper scooper after another.

A few of the more recent complaints ...

I'm on my 3rd Littermaid box. Petsmart just keeps giving me a new one every time I return the broken one I have purchases. Each time it's something new that breaks on the litter box. No one answers the 1-800 number on the instruction manual. Can't get any help. VERY frustrating!!

This time the red sleep button is stuck on. The litter box quit working, I have to scoop it myself.

The quality of product is so bad that it does not work and I can't even take it back to Petsmart because the flyer that came with tells you that you can't return it to the store and can only contact either by phone or on-line. It's total rip off and they should be banned from further sales as I believe it is scam to sell something that does NOT work.

I am out over 300.00.

I purchased a litermaid automatic box cleaner. It did not perform like they said or advertised. It does not self clean. The product does not do what they said it would. I purchased this product to save me some time, but I still have to sift the liter. The product doesn't go close enough to the bottom of the box. As any cat owner knows, cats bury their elimination. I'very disapointed. False advertising, great idea if it worked.

Having to take the time to clean the box, or else rude smelling home.

Jessie of Sheridan, WY March 11, 2009

Jessie of Sheridan WY (03/11/09)
I am on my SECOND Littermaid litter box. I received the first one as a gift from my mother after rescuing three kittens from the junk yard by my home. It worked for about a month before it started running constantly - the rake would rake up the litter, return to the start position, and then run again. I had to manually turn it off to get it to stop and turn it on several times each day to keep the box clean.

When I attempted to contact the company using the phone number in the instruction manual, I repeatedly got all lines are busy messages and was many times transferred directly to their voice mail system. No one ever returned ANY of my messages. My mother was finally able to get through to them after spending nearly an hour on hold and got them to replace the defunct litter box.

I am now on my SECOND box, and after less than a week of use I'm having the same problem. The rake runs constantly even though I've taken it apart, cleaned it, put it back together, made sure there were NO blocks anywhere. I am now once again in the run-around trying to get ahold of someone at Littermaid about the broken litte box. Same story - all lines are busy, leave a message or send an e-mail. No response to messages by phone or e-mail.

The first box was a gift and the second was a replacement, so I'm not personally out any money. But at over 100 a pop for the litter box, I think it's completely rediculous that the things don't last more than a few months (at best). Don't the people at Littermaid realize that a self-cleaning litter box is a LUXURY item in an economy already hurting? You would think they'd asess all the negative reports and fix their customer service and workmanship issues in order to keep their customers.

rake broke after only a couple of months. They do not offer replacement part and you can't get anyone at this company to call back or respond to complaint form on web site. This is the second one I have purchased and the first one the motor burned up after only about 6 months of use.

Rake and now just a very expensive litter box.
