When we adopted our dog Abby from a rescue she was 12 weeks old. Almost immediately we new we wanted to feed that would be a higher quality dog food. As most labs experience she had skin allergies from corn and other by products that were associated with low end dog foods. We researched and after talking with a NUTRO representative felt fairly reassured that NUTRO was the best deal for our money.

Shortly after Abby began have small digestive issues if she was given a treat or anything other than her normal diet food. We bought her NUTRO Chicken and Rice for sensitive stomachs. The problem however continued. Shortly after Abby turned a year old she began experiencing severe GI problems, loose, bloody stools and severe vomiting. When the problems didn't subside after a day we took her to the vet.

When our vet asked us what we were feeding her she immediately told us that the NUTRO was the problem. After a few hundred dollars in vet bills along with prescription medication Abby has gotten better, but she still experiences a few lasting effects as the vet told us might happen. Wee were told that dogs that eat NUTRO from the time they're a puppy on have a much higher chance of continued GI problems throughout their lives.

Abby can only have raw or holistic food now and we have to be careful what types of treats we feed her or she will become sick. This food is horrible, and the fact that it's continuing to be sold after so many known issues needs to be reconsidered. Our dog would be much healthier today if we had never fed her NUTRO.

Lasting GI problems, vet bills, and the need for medications.

In October 2005 we went to Mud Bay pet store to buy our 5 year old cat some new cat food. We ended up getting Nutro Natural Choice food because it claimed to have good ingredients. After only a few days of feeding him the new food we came home to him in extreme pain. He was hissing, holding one leg awkwardly and making terrible noises that made us think he had injured himself while we were at work. We ended up taking him to he ER where he was misdiagnosed as having dislocated or hurt his knee, given injections of Ketofen and buprenexn and sent home to sleep.

Unfortunately, he was actually having a urinary blockage from the food that kept him up all night, even though he was heavily drugged and should of been sleeping soundly. The following night it got worse and took him back to the ER where he had to be sedated, a catheter put in and given fluids and antibiotics. They kept him overnight until we could take him to our normal vet for another day of tests and observation.

The vet said the condition is caused by food with too high levels of magnesium and ash. He is now on Prescription Hill's C/D formula wet food and doing great. We will probably keep him on it the rest of his life to be safe that this doesn't happen again with another company, claiming to have great ingredients. The worst part is, before I made he connection with Nutro's food and what happened,

I gave the bag of food to a friend with a cat who ran out of food, since we couldn't use it anymore, and her cat ended up in he ER with a similar problem a couple weeks later! I feel guilty for giving it to her, but that just shows (along with tons of complaints online) that THIS FOOD IS NOT SAFE!

Over 1,000. 129.00 for first ER visit, 614.73 for he second ER visit, plus a couple hundred at our normal vet, plus prescription food (recommended for the rest of his life)

We have fed our puppy Nutro Natural Choice Small Bites Chicken, Rice, & Oatmeal since we got him 4 months ago. He always did well with it until recently. Since I opened a new bag last week, he has experienced vomiting and loose stools, and is always eating grass and leaves. I wondered if it was his food, and now that I have read these complaints I know it is because of the similar symptoms.

I will take the dog food back and exchange it for a new brand. Thank God we discovered this now before it's too late.

For the past few months, my 3 year old golden retriever had suddenly been having bouts with vomiting and diarrhea, lethargy and just plain old malaise; he definitely wasn't himself. Just like everyone else who has complained, I assumed he'd ingested some type of foreign matter. He has been on Nutro dog food for 3 years so naturally I didn't give a thought to his food. Until I did some research online.

I changed his food and for a few days he was fine - until yesterday when it was apparent there was a serious problem. I took him into emergency last night. His hemoglobin levels were off the charts both high mass and low volume), he was dehydrated and creatinine (exhibiting kidney function) was also high. He was put on antibiotics, IV to restablish fluids and sent home on a bland diet until vomiting & diarrhea subsides. Hopefully there has been no permanent damage. A follow-up visit to his regular vet in a few days will tell.

It is truly unbelievable that Nutro (Menu Foods) continues to negate this enormous problem. Consumers need to be warned, and this food needs to be pulled from the shelves.

750 later and continuous carpet cleaning, not to mention this poor dog's suffering, there is no doubt in my mind that Nutro is the culprit. He was on the Lamb/Rice formula. I have contacted the FDA to file a complaint. My heart goes out to those who have lost their precious pets.

None of the complaints about Nutro have ever been verified. There is nothing wrong with Nutro Dog Food. I've used it for years with my 5 dogs, and so are many of our adopters, with excellent results. These unfortunate people who have lost their pets, lost them do to illnesses not related to the dog food.
