PETCO Settles Federal Charges

I work as a sales associate and no matter what I do it is NEVER good enough. I use too many paper towels, too much window cleaner, don't sell enough dogs, ring up the register wrong, never punch out for lunch, get accused of stealing other co-workers sales, not checking to see if all the animals are alive before store opens, the list goes on and on. I have yet to hit comission and all I hear is we have to overcome not enough sales and hit your comission. If people don't have the money for overpriced dogs what am I suppose to do?

When they go poop yes some eat it, but it is NOT from not being fed, some dogs do this no matter what you do, and yes there are things you can give them to get them to stop it. We try and get to it A.S.A.P. but sometimes you can't get there before they eat it. We take care of them: feed, water, give them attention, and try to get them good homes, but it is NEVER enough. If you don't hit comission 2 paycycles in a row you are let go. You are urged to come in on your days off and work off the clock to get your comission to keep your job, as well as coming in early and staying late. How much can you do when you are only there for 2 hrs. at a time during slow days? Plus you get sent home early if it is slow. Who can afford to go to work for 2 - 8 hrs. a week and hit comisssion?

There are other people working with you and it is like buzzards over a dead carcas to get a person to let you get a puppy for them, let them bond and play, give them an outragious price and explain why it is that high. Yah they are good reasons, but if they don't have the money and are declined the credit when applying, what else can a person do? Unless you are a person who can sell ice to an eskimo you don't have a snowballs chance in hell.

I love the puppies, spending time with them, trying to find good homes for them, but why the pressure? I am at the point I don't want to go to work because if I don't sell 5 - 6 puppies a week I get lectured every 5 min. I get calls every hour, did you sell any puppies yet? No, well why not? Get on the ball we need sales. On and on and on, and if you don't get the phone when they call; then you get a butt chewing for that too. Stop calling and let me try and do my job.

I worked for Petco for a short period, until I realized how unrealiable and uncaring the company is. I now work for an all-natural pet food store, so I have been keeping an eye on competing food such as Nutro and Science Diet. I can't read anymore about the pets who have died after eating Nutro. It breaks my heart. I just don't want consumers to believe that everything is ok just because a store employee says it is. They are not informed about product issues, or educated about ingredents. Trust your instincts and do your OWN research!

Many pets have become ill or worse.

I work at a Pet Company in upstate New York. My sole job is to take care of the puppies: make sure everyone is clean, healthy, eating well, and as comfortable as possible. I agree with a lot of people's comments about the dogs cages being small and I do feel bad that they have to walk on the mesh all the time. As an animal lover, I do what ever I can to make these dogs feel as good as they can in the situation.

Every dog has a mat to lay on, and hopefully soon, they will have small cloth beds. The dogs get fed twice a day, and have a constant supply of water available to them. Also, we have a vet that gives them check-ups once a week. Of course I would rather see them free and out of the cages, but for the most part their time in the pet shop is short, because they get sold to loving families.

I was an employee and the cages are so small...there is no padding, just grates and the cages are only cleaned twice a day. The dogs themselves are only cleaned when they are covered in their own feces or right before they are off to their new home. In the back (employee only room) there was a closet where there were a few cages installed for the sick dogs. There were 5 cages and at the time there were 6-8 sick dogs. There was a dead bird in a cage. The employees are not trained professionals (I was 16 yrs old with NO experience).

I ended up doing a "no call-no show" and was fired. I could NOT go through one more day of watching those poor mistreated animals (not just the dogs) suffer in their cages.

I sent a complaint last week to ConsumerAffairs.com about my experience at a Pet Company store in Danbury Ct., how the dogs were sitting in feces, eating it, and the whole situation was sad and horrible...tonight I read all of the complaints from many different states about this company and obvious cruelty to the puppies. Why doesn't anyone shut them down? It is happening at many of their stores.

I was appalled reading about all of these sick puppies, and how they are so starved they are eating their feces. It breaks my heart reading all of those posts. Someone needs to step in and help these poor animals.
