Feds Raid PETCO Warehouse in Illinois
PETCO Settles Federal Charges

Denise of Staten Island, NY March 12, 2009

My Boyfriend and I had purchased a toy yorkie on 02/06/09 for 1600 with an additional warrantee for a total of 2000. The warrantee was valid only if we had taken the dog to the Vet within 14 days. The dog (Riley) was taken to the Vet on 02/09/09 he was diagnosed with a parasite. The following week we had to take him back to the Vet and he was treated for kennel cough. Riley did not respond to antibiotic therapy after a week and was hospitalized for pneumonia for 5 days. While in the hospital Riley suffered from several seizures.Riley has now been diagnosed with a liver shunt which is congenital. He will need a very expensive surgery.

My family is heartbroken and I am very angry that I only had Riley a month and he is a very sick dog.The Vet bills already exceeded the cost of the dog. The Pet Company is selling sick dogs. DO NOT BUY FROM THE PET COMPANY SAVE YOURSELF THE HEARTACHE!

This a long story, which I can send you all sorts of sales slips Vet. bills. to summarize, I bought a pet which after many attempts to return, cure, and help a very sick puppy from the above mentioned co. After the attacked people on numerous occasions (pictures available) my children and myself, I had to have the puppy euthanised at my pain and expense. I am being constantly called to continue to pay for a puppy which I spent hundreds of dollars on. Not only in payments for the UNFIT FOR SALE PUPPY but also Vet. bills. I am willing to send letters, pictures, and claims from Myself, THE PET CO. and three different Vets.

I want to report the horribly awful conditions that animals are stored at the Pet Company here at the Menlo Park Mall. 1. They are put in tiny metal cages. 2. They are not allowed to roam around freely at any time during the day (I have never seen it in the many many trips I have made to the Mall.) 3. No one plays with the dogs. They are isolated for extended periods of time. 4. There is no access to fresh air or sunlight in the store. 5. They are often put into cages with other dogs. This means the very tiny cage is now even tinier. If they are lucky, the other dog is friendly and they can at least lay on each other and rest. But otherwise, this is a very crowded situation. 6. Their existence in cages goes on for an unlimited number of days and nights.

Isn't there something we can all do about this sitaution starting with the pet store in our neighbourhood? How can this poor treatment of animals be lawful? What would it take for the pet store to be raided, fined and brought into court for trial? When will the animals finally be treated humanely? Please, some one , some organization help us solve this. This is a desperate situation and it is untolerable.

I just wanted to crespond to some of the negative comments about Pet Company stores across the country. I have only been to one Pet Company, at Roosevelt Field Mall on Long Island, and have purchased two puppies from there. Each time I went in there the cages were clean and so were the puppies. I never thought I'd buy a pet store dog but it's hard to resist a puppy who really wants you to take him home. The first puppy we got there was a 3 month old Collie. We named him Mason and he'll be 5 in a few months. He is the kindest, sweetest dog and has never been sick.

We even went to the vet reccomended by the store and have continued to go there. The vet is Quality Veternary care and we really like Dr. M and his staff. The second dog we got there was a 5 month old Sheltie who we named Lincoln. He is 8 months old now and very healthy. You couldn't meet a sweeter dog. The staff at the store was very fond of Lincoln and one of the employees, I think his name was Kermit, told us Lincoln was the best dog ever and he was right. I can't speak for any other locations and I know there are so many people out there who do not care for animals the way they should but my experiences with The Pet Company at Roosevelt Field Mall were both positive. Thank you

So far, all of the reports are about either cats, dogs, and bunnies. Does anyone care for the other pets? At the Pet Company in Westfield Sunrise Mall in Massapequa, the dogs are kept in the most horrible conditions, Yes. We checked out the place and saw a large tank full of birds. They did seem a little overcrowded in my opinion.

There was also a 10 gallon tank with at least 10 over-priced baby Bearded Dragons. They were quite active and looked Healthy but at 90, yes 90, they were nearly twice the amount a breeder would have them (and remember, Breeders are usually far more expensive than pet stores). In fact, I checked online and found a breeder who had a fully-grown SunFire Beardie for 90. They had absolutely no fish for sale, and the Beardies were the only reptiles except for a little tank that would probably had anoles in it though there were none at the time.

They had a bunch of rodents in 10 gallon tanks. They had 2 male Gerbils in the same tank and they were attacking each other. We were sold 3 dwarf hamsters on a discount and were told that they it was a mom and 2 babies. the lady who was helping us, a slightly snotty 18-year-old, refused to touch them when we decided on the deal. She went away and came back with a much older women, maybe in her 30's and she got them out for us. We are now suckers, as we have found out that the 2 babies are actually 2 nearly full-grown males, who will have a small fight a few times a day, but no physical damage has been done at this time. NEVER buy ANYTHING from the pet prison.

I dropped off my healthy mini dachsund for grooming at 9:00 a.m. 2/14/09. I went to the store and when I got home around 9:45 I had a message to call PETCO then another to call the animal hospital. I called the animal hospital to find that my baby had been rushed in from PETCO near death, the vet couldn't hear her heart at all. They put Spunky on IV and gave her some steroids and oxygen to get her breathing again. I was told she had fluid in her lungs and they initially thought she was diabetic because her sugar was extremely high.

After a few hours I was told to take the to the Emergency Hospital to stay thru the week-end. Once examined by the Dr. at the Emergency Hospital he stated that she was not a diabetic but if there was a stressful situation or trauma for Spunky the sugar would go up and the fluid would fill her lungs. We had great hope that all would be fine but I received the call at 2:00 a.m. telling me that her heart stopped. I would like to know what happened to my baby in the 30 minutes she was at PETCO. My husband went to ask some questions but got alot of attitude and no real answers.

Spunky died around 2:00 a.m. 2/15/09 I paid 1300.00 in vet bills and do not have my baby here

My fiancee bought a maltese puppy at Croosgates Mall at The Pet Company and the puppy seemed fine. The day before x-mas our dog Shaggy seemed to have a cold in his left eye. Over that weekend both of his eyes became very gooey and closed shut. I brought him to the doctors and they said he basically had pink eye and he wasn't producing any tears. So they gave him eye drops and oniment for his eyes. Then he went back one week later and his eyes weren't any better and his behavior wasn't himself. He's a very hyper dog and barks all the time. All he does now is sleep and he's not eating.

So then the doctor did tests and said that he has ulsers on his eyes and that there has to be something else wrong with him because of his behavior change. So he was then put on 2 eye oniments, plus artifical tear drops, and 2 pills. I went back to the doctors one week later and his left eye is better, but the right eye isn't better and there could be a possiblitiy that he could lose his right eye. But the blood work came back and there is something wrong with his liver. He needs more medication, ultrasounds, and biopsy, which I can't afford. And even after all these tests he can still die. They want to start him on the medication that I just can't afford to prolong his life.

We contacted the Pet Company at Colonie Center because the one where we bought the dog is closed and they had us fill out claim forms to get reinbrusted for the vet. bills, and we explained that the dog will die due to the fact that his liver is infected. In our paperwork it says that if the dog should die within the year of purchase and we prove that we took care of the dog and give copies of all medical files of the dog we could get store credit. Right now they are saying that we probably won't get reinbrusted for the vet. bills and we won't get some kind of store credit. My vet is in the process of writing up a letter explaining how sick the dog is. But the people in the main office were very rude and nasty.

We can no longer afford all these medical bills and he's going to die within a matter of a few months. My children are very upset to see that the dog is just lying around not playing. We have to make a decision on to try to come up with money for all the meds. and tests even though he will eventually die, or do we just put him asleep so he doesn't suffer anymore and not get reinbrusted, when this is still under the one year contract.

I went to buy a bigger bird cage and one of the employees was nice trying to help find what we needed. until a sales associate named lisa started helping us we had an attitude refusing to sell us the cage when we asked her for her manager she said she was the manager and started raising her voice. I told her she did not need to get an attitude and she started cursing as me telling me to bring it [expletive]. He used the f word several times and told me that that is why she works with animals so u wouldnt have to deal with people like me.

I am extremely hurt because my nephew Dexter really loves his bird and it needs a bigger cage or it will die. Her yelling and disrespecting me caused my nephew to be sad. I would like something to be done cuz she was rude and she did not have to be. All we wanted was a cage.

I purchased the product, Sentry Pro XFC, to use on my dogs at around 8:30pm. At 9:00pm, I used it on 3 of my Chihuahuas, according to the directions. Within 30 minutes, all 3 began itching at the application and acting strange. Immediately got online to research product and saw thousands of consumers having the same issue.

After reading through approximately 150 posts about this product, washed all dogs with degreasing dish detergent. It's 2am now and they are still figity and scratching at where product was applied.

Loss of sleep and possible loss of work, if things aren't better in the morning. Mental anguish due to unknowingly poisoning my pets. Animals are in extreme discomfort and pain.

Jo Ann Jayne of Dobbs Ferry, NY December 27, 2008

I went into the The Pet Company at the Pailsades Mall. How is this allowed? The puppies are in tiny cages with only the metal to lie on. They seemed lethargic and sad. Then one employee working in the back picked up a puppy and threw it into the cage! It is not the puppy's fault that he is too fat to bend down! This was a tiny Bichon pup. I complained to the girl at the front desk who just stared at me. This store and those like them should be shut down -- this is nothing but animal cruelty.

The puppy might have been injured -- not sure.
