Purina Pet Foods

Roque of Danbury, CT September 19, 2008

Roque of Danbury CT (09/19/08)
We recently switched our two cats which have grown up on Purina Cat Chow. To Friskies(made by purina) indoor cat formula. After about one week my 9 year old cat is now dead. This cat has never been outside, had been full of life up till this morning and now I am questioning what could have caused this. I have heard about these recalls and as of now I am really distrurbed at the amount of reference to Name Brand pet foods.

This has forced me to tell my 3 year old daughter about death. And put an overall somber feeling in this happy home. I hope that these posts are read by the masses with pets and something is done. I am sure that our animals are not being fed with quality ingredients.

Death to my cat. Which was healthy until 1 weeks worth of this food.

My cat is also throwing up all the time and eating only Purina food and my Mom said her cat is too. I'm removing it as soon as I get home but I am keeping it, I have regular cat chow and one for sensitive stomachs. If my cat gets sicker or dies I will take them apart.

My cat is throwing up daily repeatedly, I never questioned the food because I trust Purina, I'm a fool apparently.

We changed our 4 dogs food to dog chow. All of them started to lose fur, when brushing them it would come out in masses. The fur was all over our home. The dogs once had beautiful soft fur, now had thin course feeling fur. One developed a skin infection and had to be treated by the vet. I can see one dog having trouble but not 4. The quality is not there. We notice their fur, but what about their health in general what was this food doing to them. We changed back to Iams and now the fur is coming back.

I opened a new bag of Purina Cat Chow indoor formula. My husband came home and found her vomiting over the next couple of days. Vomiting became severe and after many tests and medication we are up to 1600 and she still is not better. There are no new items in the house...plants etc. nothing!! I am very worried.

I would like you to assist me in investigating the probability of poisonous or tainted cat food manufactured by Purina.

I've been in touch with them over the past three weeks, and although they initially were very reluctant to pursue this matter, they have become increasingly insistent that I let them look into it, and do not contact the FDA or any governing agencies until they have had time to check this out further.

In the meantime, how many cats will suffer and/or die because of consumption of this product?

The quick story is that about three weeks ago, I bought a 4.5 lb. bag of Kit & Kaboodle for my three cats of various ages. All three exhibited immediate and subsequent violent vomiting. The vomiting ended quickly as soon as the food was removed.

After talking initially with Purina about this incident, with little concern on their part, I notified my vet. His assistant, upon hearing the story, was startled. She is a major animal lover and has horses, dogs, etc. and part of her menagerie includes 14 indoor cats. She recalled that in late March of this year, she had bought two huge bags of Kit & Kaboodle, had fed it to her barn and indoor cats and all 14 indoor cats experienced violent vomiting and diarrhea as noted by the Veterinarian himself. She wasn't certain how the barn cats responded as they are somewhat feral.

It should be noted that although she discarded the opened bag, she still has one unopened bag of Kit & Kaboodle in the trunk of her car.

I reported this to Purina and they became more attentive to me and referred me to their home office in Missouri ... they stressed however, that I not contact anyone but them about this matter. They also asked for the vet's assistant's phone no. so they could call her immediately, as well as my vet's.

This was last week. I spoke to her yesterday and she said that she had not yet been contacted by Purina. But she said ... in telling the story to her daughter and advising her daughter not to feed her own cats this product, her daughter responded, Mom, don't you remember? I told you that I bought a small bag of Kit & Kaboodle last month and fed it to the cats. They all got massively sick and threw up.

I contacted Purina yesterday with this update, and again gave them the assistant's phone no. and the times she could call. The assistant had a message when she got home from Purina (they did not call at the requested times) apologizing profusely for this situation and requesting she call them back.

Doubting very strongly that this is a coincidence, I bought 3 bags of Kit & Kaboodle at two different stores this morning. All, of course, remain sealed and unopened, and two are the same batch no. as the original one I fed my cats.

Although, Purina has been contacting me regularly as of late, they are still very evasive and have directed me to discard some of the material I have concerning this incident. They also informed me that while they were able to listen to the tape of my second conversation with one of their employees, the first I made to Purina on August 27th, 8 days earlier, has disappeared. And other such inconsistencies and the like have occurred.

I have emails between myself and Purina. The last one sent yesterday advising me to wait for the results of their physical analysis which they are supposed to contact me about this evening. I'm also quite disturbed that their investigation of their product revolves only around what they call a physical analysis, whereby they just look at the kibble's physical appearance and do not perform any chemical analyses of the contents.

I am not an investigator so I'm at loose ends as to what avenue to take next. I've contacted Action News and the woman I spoke with considered it newsworthy and said that someone would be contacting me later today, if possible. Are you interested in this potentially alarming story or do you have any ideas who might be?
