Clare of Atlanta, GA August 20, 2008
Clare of Atlanta GA (08/20/08) I switched from Purina Cat Chow to Purina One Indoor Cat formula to reduce hairballs. My cats LOVED it. A few months later, tho, my 9 year old male in perfect health started having seizures. After about a week, he was at the vet for observation when he hemorrhaged out of his nose and mouth and died. 8 months later, another cat, also seemingly the picture of health, had one grand mal seizure and died. I finally realized it had to be the Purina One that I switched to, after a third cat had a petit mal seizure. Since I switched back, no more seizures.
We lost two beloved members of the family very suddenly, and might have lost them all. Ben of Oak Harbor, WA August 18, 2008
Ben of Oak Harbor WA (08/18/08) Was feeding my dogs Purina One Lamb and Rice. I noticed that the packaging was a new design. Both my dogs got mild diarrhea. My boy stopped eating all together, but my girl ate his too when I wasn't looking. She got severe diarrhea, but his stopped when he stopped eating the food. I switched to a different type of Purina food for them. Was wondering if anyone else is having similiar problems with this?
Erin of Owensboro, KY July 13, 2008
Erin of Owensboro KY (07/13/08) My cat was diagnosed with FLUTD (urinary blockage) due to high levels of magnesium in Purina Indoor Cat Chow. He remains catheterized at the animal hospital.
As of now, vet bills total at least 300 and may be more if surgery is required. Tina of Stephenson, VA July 4, 2008
Tina of Stephenson VA (07/04/08) My dog developed severe diarrhea while on Purina Pro Plan dogfood. We took him off the food and it went away. We gave it to him again and it came back. We no longer feed this food and never will. Also a dog at the Clarke County Animal Shelter where I work died from toxic poisoning. She had nothing but Pro Plan and Pedigree dogfood.
The carpet and floors had to been cleaned several times. My dog ws sick and uncomfortable. I am not looking for any monetary reimbursements. I want the food checked. Frederick of Chaska, MN June 25, 2008
Frederick of Chaska MN (06/25/08) We believe that contaminated dog food may have caused the illness and eventual death of our three-year-old dog. It all started in early November 2007 when we began to notice some minor gastro-intestinal upset mainly in the form of gas and excessive thirst. Because the problems were sporadic and minor at first, we didnt pay much attention to them. Our dogs normal diet consisted of Purina One Chicken and Rice Formula dog food and table scraps, which we thought might be at the root of the problem.
Later, it was suggested that it might be related to the contaminated dog food scare that was widely reported on the news earlier in the year. Since Purina was not on the list of potential contaminated dog food, we eliminated it as a possible reason for our dogs digestive complaints.
His symptoms slowly worsened until in January 2008 he began to have chronic diarrhea. At this point, we took him to the vet and after numerous visits and extensive testing including blood work, x-rays, ultrasounds and biopsies; he was eventually diagnosed with canine lymphoma. By the time of this diagnosis, the cancer had spread to all of his major digestive organs and one of his kidneys had stopped functioning. We had to euthanize him in March of 2008, only four months after his initial symptoms.
Since his death, no one has been able to offer us a logical explanation as to why this happened to such a young dog. After scouring the library and internet for some answers, we finally came across several stories from other dog owners whose pets suffered after eating contaminated dog food. All of the stories were so similar to our own dogs story that we could no longer ignore the possibility that the Purina dog food caused his death. Most frightening were the similarities in the symptoms, the eventual kidney failure, the reports of dogs becoming sick within the same timeframe, and the fact we had just opened a new bag of dog food in November when all the trouble started.
After much research on the topic, we finally feel we have some answers as to what happened to our dog. Unfortunately, we will always have to live with the regret of blindly trusting Purinas brand name and relying on them to care about the quality of the ingredients they put in their pet food products. Please advise anyone you know who owns dogs to be careful, very careful about what they feed them.
