Purina Pet Foods

We had Newfoundland Dog that we bought from a reputable breeder in Aug. of 2007. The puppy was 7 weeks old at the time we brought her home. We started her on Purina One upon recommendation of vets, advertisements and the good name of Purina. We gave her either Purina One or Purina Pro Plan, depending on which one was available at the time we needed it.

In March of '08 we started to notice a signifecant appetite loss. She was also peeing in her crate which was unusual for her. I took her to our vet thinking she might have had a bladder infection. He tested her urine and it came back fine. At that time she weighed 74 lbs. Three weeks later, with an even more significant appetite loss I took her back to our vet at which time she had lost 7 lbs. One week later she had lost 5 more lbs.

At that time our vet did blood work that indicated she had kidney failure. There was nothing that could be done to save her and we had to put her down. While this was going on, I was given the name of another breeder of Newfoundlands who had done some research into Purina One and the resulting problems it had on her dogs and the dogs of other breeders she knew. I feel that there is sufficient reason to suspect that Purina One &/or Pro plan is the reason our dog suffered from kidney failure and had to be put down. I have kept the bags of food that she had been eating.

We had to put down our dog. The initial cost of purchase was 800. We also kept current on all shots and routine vet care that was needed. there was the cost of testing to find out what was the cause of her not eating. and the cost of putting her down.

Our Pure Breed Bichon Frise died this morning after being hospitalized at Foster Hosp. of Tufts Vet. Ctr. for 6 days. We buried Cody this afternoon with questions in our hearts of what went wrong, we provided every opportunity for our wonderful pet to recover. Because of the GI symptoms, N/V, diah. that Cody most recently experienced after changing his dry food to Puriea lamb and rice formulation I am convinced that Cody died from his dog food and associated electrolye imbalance that resulted from this injestant.

Cody became deydrated, required eclectrolyt and fluid replacement and surgery due to a questionable bowel obstruction, which never was the case. We paid 5000.00 to help our beloved pet recover and you are responsible for our loss. Your disregard for the products you provide has caused our family unmentionaable heartache due to the loss and death of our pet, Cody.

Had two pregnant Cavalier King Charles spaniel females. Ultrasound showed numerous viable fetuses at 30 days. Fed Purina Pro Plan small breed puppy from 30 days to whelping. Both girls had one necrotic puppy. In one girl is caused early labor and two more of her puppies were too young to survive.

A pet puppy sells for 2000 and show puppies generally go from 3500 to 5000. Minimum loss is 16000 from these 4 puppy deaths.

Molly is the first dog I've ever had. We adopted her in early October 2007, from a local shelter. She is a three year old beagle. We fed her Purina Dog Chow (in the green bag) as well as periodic dog treats. She does not get human food, with the exception of a baby carrot now and then when I'm feeding the guinea pigs.

After two months, she began having seizures, two in just two weeks. In addition, her stool was not consistent, sometimes normal, sometimes runny. She also scratched at her nose quite a bit. We were very worried. Fortunately, her previous owners had left her veterinary information when they brought her to the shelter. I called to see if she'd had any previous medical problems. There were none that they knew of; Molly had only been in for routine vaccinations.

After the second seizure, I did some research online. I discovered your site, and decided that Molly may be reacting to the dog food.

I did some more research to locate a quality dog food. We switched to Eagle Holistic Chicken and Rice. It's much more expensive but worth every cent, in my opinion. Since the switch, all of her symptoms have vanished. Most importantly, she has not had any more seizures, and it is now the end of March 2008.

I never contacted Purina about the issue because until time had passed, I wasn't sure that the food was the cause. Now I am certain.

I have had three dogs die after eating the Members Mark Exceed Lamb and Rice dog food which is made by Purina. I also have two dogs that experienced some of the same issues as the ones that died but was able to take them off of the food before it was too late. They each were suffering from kidney failure. However, they are still alive but no longer eat Members mark Exceed Rice and Lamb. I called several times after each one died just to make sure their deaths had nothing to do with the food. Each time I was told there were not any claims or current recalls with that food or anything to be concerned about.

We have lost three dogs, two dogs will never be the same, we have had to tell our three year old daughter three times within about a years time, three of her dogs have died and have spent thousands of dollars trying to figure out what happened to the dogs so that we do not have to go through this again.
