Cecile of Charlottetown writes: We contacted a vet who thought maybe his food was too hard (we bought the same food they were feeding him) and told us to wet it. We did this but the puppy continued to have diarrhea and vomit. We then looked at his vet record and saw that he hadn't received his booster, which was due to be administered before we bought him, and that his dewormer (which was administered just before we took him home) was three days late. We took the puppy to the vet and he told us it was probably parvovirus, which is a deadly disease to rottweilers. Rottweilers are particularly susceptible to this and their vaccinations have to be accurate to the day. The vet told us to take him home and call if he got worse. The next day we were back to get electrolytes, which had to syringed into him because by now he wouldn't move, let alone eat. We were also given pills to give him to help settle his stomach and which contained an antibiotic. Twelve days later, on his three month birthday, he was admitted to the animal hospital and hooked up to an IV. At first we were hopeful, but the morning of the 17, the vet phoned. The puppy (Ryelie), had bleeding in his gums, had jaundice (means that the disease was no longer just eating away his intestines and stomach, but was now attacking his liver), and he was no longer even able to sit up. The vet didn't think he'd make it to the evening let alone be able to fight it off, so we made a hard but humane decision, and had him put down. This innocent puppy suffered immensely due to the negligence of this pet store and they should be held responsible, cover all vet fees ($362.85) and refund us what we paid for the puppy (which was $350.00 plus tax. Cecile should insist that the pet store compensate her. She could also file a complaint with the local animal-protection agency and, if there is a Small Claims Court, file suit there.
