Megan of Temecula, CA January 9, 2009
Megan of Temecula CA (01/09/09) When I was at walmart the other day i went back to the fish department. When i was back there i noticed that sevreal fish where dead and most where dieing. i took pictures with my phone and im going to send a letter and a patition to walmart notifing them about the problem. i have my dad to help me with this and most of my friends and teachers will (hopefully) be willing to sgin the petiton. Also when i was there i really wanted to buy a little goldfish but i knew that it would be no use because it would just die(poor thing). Their fish are sold for really high prices ( walmart promises low prices, yeah right) and then people take them home only to find them dead the next morning. Hey, i may be only 12 but i know i can make a diffrence!
Lisa of Rock Hill, NY January 8, 2009
Lisa of Rock Hill NY (01/08/09) My Walmart isn't horrible. But the pet department... A mess. I was there 2 weeks before Christmas and then there again a week after. NOw I understand it's the holidays... but first off.. not one person even straightened out this section.. open boxes and product everywhere. The same as almost 4 weeks prior. What really was horrible was the condition of the fish tanks. Now as someone pointed out, yes they are fish.. but MY walmart the fish aren't taken care of. There are 12 tanks and every single one had fish in them dieing.. dead.. stuck to the filters.. horrible. Not one fish healthy enough to purchase.
I have been in pet stores with fish and I have NEVER scene anything so.. morbid. The fish DIE and get DISEASED because no one takes proper care of them and I think they should not sell fish anymore. The poor beta's were over the sink.. some in barely enough water to even move in. There was a plastic bag FILLED with dead fish in the sink. Most of the time the tanks are empty.. awaiting the next shippment of fish ready to die because no one takes care of them.. the tanks are dirty to. I am sadly a person who rescue's the betta's from walmart. I hate to know they will just die in there bowls because no one bothers to change their water...or at least add fresh water to them..so I am sure they will have them again. But I don't think that Walmart, specially the one in Monticello NY should continue to sell fish if they can't properly care for them.
Eric of Elmhurst, IL January 2, 2009
Eric of Elmhurst IL (01/02/09) On Tuesday November 30,2008 I was in one of [their] stores in the animal department, and I saw 2-3 dead fish. Not only dead but decaying. This was one of the NUMEROUS occasions that I had seen dead fish in [their] stores. I once bought 2 fish in one [their] stores, while driving home 1 of the fish died. Later that day the other fish died. I understand fish die, but not like this.

Rachel of Cody WY (12/23/08) I really don't see what you people are complaining about. I go to Walmart all the time and yes, there are dead fish, not all of them are going to stay alive, ok? Fish fight. Yes, they FIGHT. Sometimes, they KILL each other. I bought an African Chichlid EIGHT years ago and guess what? He's still alive! If you plan to buy a fish from ANY store at least open your eyes and actually examine the fish before you decide to blame Walmart for the mistreatment of fish.
They feed them at our store and with the bettas? They keep them in their own separate container so they don't FIGHT and KILL one another. Did you know that when fish fight and there's an open wound that they start to sometimes grow a fungus infection and die? Well that's not Walmart's fault and quite frankly they can't sit there and tell each individual fish hey don't fight, it'll make us look bad. I get my fish from Walmart and they are still ALIVE because when I purchase them I OPEN my eyes to look for disease and infection and I LOOK to see how many other fish are dead in their tank. My advice: Stop COMPLAINING and OPEN your eyes.
Randy of Watertown, SD December 18, 2008
Randy of Watertown SD (12/18/08) My wife recently bought a siamese fighting fish (Betta) from Wal-Mart, and though I suspected that this was probably not wise, she pointed out that the only other store in town that sold fish and other pets had recently gone out of business, so Wal-Mart was the only option for buying a first pet for our 2 year old daughter. All my fears were confirmed when she brought home the fish, she told me about the appalling conditions of the tanks at Wal-Mart...dead fish floating all over in the tank. She said she had picked out the most active fish in the tank. We researched how to properly care for the fish, and did everything right, but the fish died of some disease within a week and a half. Wal-Mart should be forced by regulators to shut down its live animal sales, as they cannot properly care for them prior to customer purchase. I don't understand why with all the complaints about this nothing has been done yet....This seems like a pretty easy cruelty case, not to mention gross negligence, and at the very least a consumer rip-off.
One very heart-broken little girl
